Yankees acquire third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Rockies for pair of prospects
DENVER (AP) — The New York Yankees acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies on Friday, giving them a veteran at a position of need as they try to stop their slide down the AL East standings.
The Yankees sent pitching prospects Josh Grosz and Griffin Herring to Colorado.
The 30-year-old McMahon, an All-Star a year ago, was hitting .217 with 16 home runs and 35 RBIs for last-place Colorado. His 127 strikeouts this season led the National League entering Friday.
He s owed about $36.2 million from the remainder of a $70 million, six-year contract through 2027.
McMahon had spent all nine of his seasons in the majors with the Rockies. He is a career .240 hitter with 140 home runs and 452 RBIs..
The Yankees, who began play Friday 4 1/2 games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East, moved Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base in early July and cut ties with DJ LeMahieu.
McMahon is owed about $36.2 million from the remainder of a $70 million, six-year contract through 2027. He is due $4,193,548 for the remaining portion of his $12 million salary this year and $16 million in each of the next two seasons.

(AP) — Tina Charles scored 24 points, Bria Hartley and Marina Mabrey both added 15 and the last-place Connecticut Sun rolled to a 95-64 win over the Golden State Valkyries on Sunday. The Sun (4-20) had a season high for points thanks to season bests of 12 3-pointers, 53% overall shooting (35 of 66) and 14 steals. French rookie Leila Lacan had six steals in just her sixth game. Jacy Sheldon scored 13 points off the bench for the Sun, who turned 24 turnovers into 34 points to end a four-game skid. Charles reached double figures for the 395th time, third in WNBA history behind Diana Taurasi (488) and Tina Thompson (404), and scored 20 points or more for the 185th time, second behind Taurasi (259). She played just 19 minutes.
