Sex, food and politics in Apple TV+ drama Carême, about France's first celebrity chef

He is a dream in the kitchen – and elsewhere in the house. He makes a mean cream-puff tower. And he has got moves like Jagger.

Alas, Antonin Carême has been dead since the 1830s, but nobody is perfect, right?
Most people have heard of Napoleon Bonaparte, but not many are familiar – even in France – with the story of this chef who cooked for the French emperor and his contemporaries, rising from a poor kitchen boy to become a standard-bearer of French cuisine.
Now a new
Apple TV+ period drama, Carême, argues that he was the very first celebrity chef – there is even a Top Chef-style cooking contest in front of a panel of judges.
For the vibe, think comedy drama series
The Bear but set in postrevolutionary Paris. Carême even directs his staff at one point to say 'Oui, chef', and we could totally imagine him, like the Disney+ show's Jeremy Allen White, in a Calvin Klein underwear advertisement, if those had existed back then.

The series, which dropped its first two episodes this week, also shows how Carême was not just a cook, or master pastry maker, or, well, sex god. We watch as he is pulled into political intrigue by his boss, the cunning diplomat Talleyrand, and used as a spy.

Four Seasons Hong Kong turns 20 with Michelin-starred dinners and special events

It is billed as the culinary event of the year: the Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong's 20th anniversary celebrations include three evenings of guest chefs from around the world, bringing an extra 20 Michelin stars to the hotel's eight. Guillaume Galliot , executive chef at the hotel's three-Michelin-starred Caprice , will host the spectacular dinners on September 18, 19 and 20. To commemorate the anniversary, Galliot has invited 15 top executive chefs and pastry chefs from across Asia and Europe for a once-in-a-lifetime set of tasting menus. 'I'm thrilled to bring together friends I've met at various points of my career to cook together, and celebrate the hotel's and restaurant's 20th anniversary,' says Galliot. 'Food is about generosity, conviviality, and where the best produce comes together perfectly on the plate through precision and technique.' His dishes include his roasted Challans duck with dolce forte sauce, celeriac and red berries, and his mum's garden tomatoes in verbena elegance. His third dish, a classic French recipe reimagined, is roasted pigeon with French figs and eggplants in fig sauce. He uses the Racan breed of pigeon from the Loire Valley, where he was born. The pigeon is cooked in a cocoa pod from Vietnam and served with salsify, puffed potatoes and cocoa jus. Two lauded chefs will come over from the UK: Claude Bosi from Bibendum in London, and Sat Bains of his eponymous restaurant in Nottingham. Both restaurants have two Michelin stars, while Sat Bains also has a Green star. Other noteworthy chefs include Alan Taudon of two-star L'Orangerie at the revered Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris, and Jordy Navarra of award-winning Toyo Eatery in Manila, which is No 42 on the Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list this year. Filmmaker George Lucas makes San Diego Comic-Con debut for Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

Excited fans waved glowing Star Wars lightsabers on Sunday at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for George Lucas' latest project, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Along with Lucas, the panel included director Guillermo del Toro and Taiwan-born Doug Chiang, vice-president of Disney's Lucasfilm, with Queen Latifah moderating at the San Diego Convention Centre. Attendees shouted 'Lucas! Lucas! Lucas!' and clapped their hands in anticipation of the Star Wars creator's arrival, and gave the 81-year-old a standing ovation as he took his seat. 'Opening in 2026, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is a first-of-its-kind institution dedicated to illustrated storytelling across time, cultures, and media,' a press release from the museum said. The 11-acre grounds, in Exposition Park in Los Angeles, will include a green space and a 300,000-square-foot building with galleries, two theatres, a library, restaurant, cafe, and retail and community spaces. Some of its collection will include art from comic book artist Jack Kirby, painter Norman Rockwell and illustrator Kadir Nelson, as well as a Lucas archive with models, props, concept art and costumes. 'I love all art, no matter what it is,' Lucas said after showing a video that gave a sneak peek at the museum. The video included renderings of the museum interior and exterior, as well as the museum's broad range of art ranging from more traditional fine art and comic book strips to Star Wars sculptures and installations.
