Vijay in no hurry for allies, to set his terms

Time of India6 days ago
Chennai: Amidst feelers and speculation about prospective electoral alliances, TVK president Vijay has decided on a 'go slow' strategy to negotiate from a position of strength.
Party sources said TVK will take a decision on alliances only in November, after he completes a tour of the state. There would be no compromise on his being the alliance leader and the chief minister candidate, sources said.
"This will happen after Vijay's public outreach including a conference in Madurai and a state-wide tour that starts in the delta region," said a TVK leader. By not rushing into tieups and first making clear who the alliance leader would be, TVK believes it can get prospective allies on its terms.
"We have the strength to contest all 234 assembly seats on our own. Till the state-wide tour, there will be no announcement on allies," said a Vijay aide.
There has been speculation that O Panneerselvam has been keen on an electoral understanding with Vijay. This possibility gained signficance after OPS made his displeasure known over being denied an audience with Narendra Modi when the Prime Minister was in Tamil Nadu last week.

TVK insiders, however, said no discussion has taken place between Panneerselvam's camp and TVK. For OPS to make the formal move, first he has to sever his ties with BJP, which some of his supporters say may happen soon. OPS is expected to meet the press on Wednesday or Thursday after he returns from Madurai.
"If the TVK has to win, it should have an alliance with many parties that are willing to accept him as the CM candidate," said an associate of OPS. "OPS can't go to Vijay immediately; it will take some time." If Election Commission dismisses his pleas over the ownership of AIADMK, OPS will be left with no option but to float his own party, the associate said.
The TVK camp is upbeat after some of its surveys showed a groundswell of support for TVK to the extent of making it a DMK vs TVK contest.

India and the Philippines stage joint naval drill in the disputed South China Sea

India and the Philippines have staged joint naval exercises in the disputed South China Sea for the first time, a high-profile military deployment that antagonized China. Beijing has separate territorial disputes with the two Asian democracies and a long-running regional rivalry with New Delhi. Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff Gen. Romeo Brawner said Monday that the two-day joint naval sail and exercises which began Sunday went successfully, and expressed hopes that Filipino forces could engage India's military in more joint maneuvers in the future. The Chinese military's Southern Theater Command said it conducted routine patrols in the South China Sea on Sunday and Monday and added that it remains resolute in defending China's territory and maritime rights and interests. Live Events Without mentioning India by name, the Southern Theater Command accused the Philippines of drawing in outside countries to organize joint patrols that it said undermine regional peace and stability. China's Foreign Ministry said territorial disputes should be resolved by those directly involved without any third-party intervention. China has a longstanding land border dispute with India in the Himalayas, which sparked a monthlong war in 1962 and a number of deadly firefights since then. Separately, Beijing's expansive claims to virtually the entire South China Sea, a key global trade route, have led to tense confrontations with other claimant states, particularly the Philippines and Vietnam. Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also lay claims to parts of the contested waters. The Philippines has staged naval patrols in the disputed waters with its treaty ally, the United States, and other strategic partners including Japan, Australia, New Zealand and France to promote freedom of navigation and overflight and strengthen deterrence against China. It has allowed journalists to join territorial sea and aerial patrols to witness China's increasingly aggressive actions, provoking angry Chinese reactions. In response to a question last week about Manila's plans to build up military cooperation, China's Ministry of National Defense called the Philippines a "troublemaker" that has aligned itself with foreign forces to stir up trouble in what China deems its own territorial waters. Brawner said the Philippines has to boost deterrence to prevent war. "The way to do that is, number one, the Armed Forces of the Philippines has to be strengthened through modernization, and secondly, we need to partner with like-minded nations and that's what we're doing with India," he said last week. During a reception on board an Indian navy tanker, the INS Shakti, on Thursday, Brawner said the vessel's port call in Manila was more than ceremonial. It "sends a powerful signal of solidarity, strength in partnership and the energy of cooperation between two vibrant democracies in the Indo-Pacific," he said. Brawner welcomed the deepening of relations between the two Asian countries and "reaffirmed the shared commitment to maritime security, regional stability and a rules-based international order in one of the world's most geopolitically sensitive regions." Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos left Monday for a five-day state visit to India for talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top officials to boost defense, trade and investment, agriculture, tourism and pharmaceutical industry engagements.

Panun Kashmir demands terrorist-state tag for Pakistan

Panun Kashmir , an organisation advocating the cause of displaced Kashmiri Pandits , on Monday accused the central government of shirking from recognising the genocidal objectives of terrorism and avoiding the designation of Pakistan as a terrorist state. They said this would certainly jeopardise future security operations in Jammu and Kashmir. It is extremely unfortunate and will certainly lead to jeopardising future security operations, even those based on the New Normal enunciated by the GoI," Panun Kashmir Chairman Dr. Ajay Chrungoo told reporters here. He said that while communicating with utmost regard and appreciation for the way the defence forces of the nation successfully conducted Operation Sindoor , Panun Kashmir feels it is its utmost responsibility to call upon the government to recognise Pakistan as a terrorist state. Live Events "The New Normal enunciated by the GoI after the Pahalgam massacre should have been based on the outright and unambiguous recognition of genocide as the prime objective of the terrorist violence in Jammu and Kashmir," he said. He said that instead of calling it genocide, the GoI described the objective of terrorist violence in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the Pahalgam massacre, as a disruption of Hindu-Muslim unity - an interpretation that, he claimed, undermines the motivations behind terrorist operations in the region. Chrungoo said the Pahalgam killings, along with the massacres perpetrated at Dangri, Shiv Khori, Baltal, and the selective killings of Hindus in Kashmir, led to the complete religious cleansing of a few thousand Hindus during the BJP's rule. "It does not merely represent gruesome violence with hidden objectives. These acts unambiguously constitute an unabated genocidal campaign. They represent the same genocidal assault that was earlier perpetrated on Hindus in Kashmir, which led to their religious cleansing," he said. He added that the failure to recognise terrorist violence as genocidal appears to be driven by the same intellectual subversion that has long sought to secularise and normalise terrorism in India. "The GoI, both during BJP and Congress rule, has been driven by the same perspective of not recognising the ideological objectives of terrorism and separatism in Jammu and Kashmir," he said. "Even after the Pahalgam massacre and Operation Sindoor, the GoI continues to follow a policy of genocide denial. It continues to be driven by a vision that treats Pakistan as both a rogue state and a normal state at the same time," he added. The GoI acknowledges that it is the Pakistani army that creates and perpetuates terrorism, yet time and again states that its fight is against terrorists and not against the Pakistani army or state, he said. "The New Normal should bring new hope. However, as things stand, the New Normal appears to be the old abnormality in new clothes," he said.
