HANOI (VNEXpress-Vetam News): Michael Owen, the 2001 Ballon d'Or winner, scored twice as Manchester United Reds (MU Legends) defeated Vietnam All Stars 4-2 in a friendly match in Da Nang on Friday night (June 27).
The match took place at 7pm at Hoa Xuan Stadium and was the highlight of the Vietnam-U.K. Football Festival, which ran from June 26 to 29.
The event featured football legends from Manchester United's golden generation, including Michael Owen, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Teddy Sheringham, Wes Brown, and Dwight Yorke.
In the 7th minute, Owen opened the scoring with a brilliant chip shot over Vietnam goalkeeper Nguyen Van Sy, after receiving a precise pass from a teammate.
Owen completed his double 20 minutes later, converting a penalty after being fouled in the box by Van Sy.
Giggs, wearing the captain's armband, celebrated with Owen after his second goal. The Welsh football legend is known for his long and successful career at Man Utd with 13 Premier League titles. Although Giggs, at 51, did not put on a show in this match, he was pivotal in coordinating the team's play.
Scholes, who also spent his entire career with United, showed his famous passing range and tactical vision, which made him one of the best English midfielders of his time.
Despite being 2-0 down, Vietnam fought back with determination. Striker Nguyen Van Quyet skillfully dribbled past Dwight Yorke but was unable to score.
Van Quyet was the most active player for Vietnam, creating several opportunities. He frequently found himself in front of the Man Utd goal but was stopped by the keeper or missed the target.
Early in the second half, former Vietnam striker Le Huynh Duc dribbled past several defenders and fired a clever shot into the near corner, reducing the deficit to 2-1.
Vietnam's spirit increased after the goal, with midfielder Nguyen Hai Long creating more chances. However, Long missed a one-on-one situation against the goalkeeper.
MU legends responded with two more goals. The crowd erupted in excitement as the away team displayed their class.
Near the end of the match, 2008 AFF Cup champion Nguyen Viet Thang scored for Vietnam, bringing the score to 4-2, which is also the final result.
Last year, Vietnam All Stars played a friendly against Brazil, suffering a heavy 1-7 defeat.
Owen, who left the pitch early in the second half, returned to wear the captain's armband until the end of the match. He spent time interacting with the Vietnam players after the final whistle.
The MU legends also signed balls and jerseys for fans. There were nearly 10,000 spectators who attended the match at Hoa Xuan Stadium, which has a capacity of 20,000. - VNExpress/Vietnam News

Spain star Bonmati in hospital with viral meningitis

SPAIN midfielder and two-time Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati is being treated in hospital for viral meningitis, the Spanish football federation (RFEF) said on Saturday. Bonmati missed Friday's friendly win over Japan in the world champions' final warm-up match before the start of Euro 2025 next week. The RFEF said in a statement that Bonmati was 'under ongoing medical observation' after tests led to her being diagnosed with viral meningitis. Bonmati, 27, did not train on Thursday after feeling unwell and later posted a photo of herself in a hospital bed watching the 3-1 victory over Japan. Spain coach Montse Tome said after the match she was unsure if Bonmati would recover in time to play at the European Championship, which runs from July 2-27 in Switzerland. 'Talking about meningitis can be scary but in theory it is under control,' said Tome. 'We don't know long she's going to be absent. I can't say anything more than that. 'Aitana is an extremely important player, so we're going to wait for her as long as possible.' Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. Viral meningitis is less serious than the rarer bacterial variant, which can lead to death within 24 hours. Spain begin their Euro 2025 campaign against neighbours Portugal on July 3 in Bern. They are also drawn with Belgium and Italy in Group C.

The Postecoglou connection to Harimau Malaya

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's rise on the international football stage is shaped by a coach connected to the vaunted Ange Postecoglou. Peter Cklamovski, who used to work with Postecoglou in the Australian national team, has revitalised Harimau Malaya since coming to Kuala Lumpur in January. Cklamovski has not only changed Malaysia's playing style, but also chalked up an impressive winning record in competitive matches. His tactical approach reflects Europa League winner Postecoglou's commitment to fluid, attacking football built on intense pressing and positional discipline. "Cklamovski is a prodigy of Postecoglou. It's no coincidence the type of coach that has now come in, especially when you look at how Malaysia want to play," said former Australian international Scott Ollerenshaw, who has been involved in the development of Malaysian football for over two decades. Cklamovski's methods also align with the footballing philosophy of the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who has long championed a modern, possession-based game in Malaysian football, primarily through his work at Johor Darul Ta'zim. "Having been around Tunku Ismail a lot, I know he wants to play a certain style of football. He doesn't want the old-fashioned English style of long balls. He wants a short-passing, possession-based game, and he's been successful with it," said Ollerenshaw. "In my opinion, Tunku Ismail can find people who can sync with that style. There's no point in bringing in quality players and then playing a rigid 4-4-2 and punting the ball forward. That was never going to work." Under Cklamovski, Malaysia recorded back-to-back wins in Asian Cup qualifiers: 2-0 against Nepal in March and 4-0 against Vietnam earlier this month. The triumph over Vietnam was significant, as it marked Malaysia's first win against the Southeast Asian powerhouse in 11 years. Harimau Malaya now show better structure, fluidity, and intent, characteristics that have long been missing from the national team.
