Filed recently, the patent details a nitrogen-doped sulfide electrolyte-based battery that offers a remarkable energy density of 400–500 Wh/kg, more than double or triple the capacity of traditional lithium-ion batteries. If Huawei can pull this off outside a lab, it might rewrite the rules of the electric vehicle industry.
What makes Huawei's solid-state EV battery so different?
The core of Huawei's innovation lies in the
nitrogen-doped sulfide electrolyte
. This component is designed to tackle two major hurdles faced by solid-state batteries—stabilizing the lithium interface and minimizing harmful side reactions, which often derail performance in real-world use.
Thanks to this upgraded electrolyte, Huawei claims the battery can reach energy densities up to 500 Wh/kg, compared to around 250 Wh/kg in current lithium-ion tech. That's the key reason the driving range can soar to 3,000 km on a single charge (as per the CLTC—China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle). Even by the stricter EPA cycle, it still holds above 2,000 km, which is far beyond any EV currently on sale globally.

Huawei has stunned the EV world by unveiling a solid-state battery that promises a jaw-dropping 3,000 km range (1,860 miles) and an ultra-fast 5-minute full charge. While still in the patent stage, the battery features sulfide-based solid-state chemistry and 400–500 Wh/kg energy density—far beyond Tesla's current lithium-ion technology. Though real-world application is years away, this bold innovation signals that Chinese tech giants like Huawei and EV makers like BYD are fast becoming threats to Tesla's dominance.

Tesla is still ahead in infrastructure and reliability, but its stock is down ~44% in 2025, reflecting growing concerns about tech leadership. BYD, meanwhile, jumped 4% after unveiling 1,000 kW ultra-fast chargers, further pressuring Tesla's image as the EV tech leader.

Can a 5-minute EV battery charge become the new normal?
Charging speed is just as impressive. According to the patent, the battery can be fully charged in 5 minutes. That's quicker than your morning coffee. Currently, even the fastest EV chargers take about 20 to 30 minutes to charge a vehicle up to 80%.
This capability could eliminate range anxiety entirely—one of the biggest factors holding consumers back from switching to electric. But here's the catch: infrastructure to support such ultra-fast charging rates simply doesn't exist yet in most parts of the world. That includes high-power grid capacity and heat management systems at charging stations.
Is it realistic to expect 3,000+ km range in commercial EVs?
While the theoretical numbers look phenomenal, experts are urging caution. This tech is currently lab-based and has not been tested at mass production scale. A major issue is the sky-high cost of materials like sulfide electrolytes, which are priced around $1,400 per kWh, or about ₹1.2 lakh—making them several times more expensive than conventional battery components.
Additionally, producing these solid-state batteries at scale comes with manufacturing complexities, including precise material handling, safety measures, and temperature controls.
Is Huawei entering the EV battery manufacturing race?
As of now, Huawei does not manufacture power batteries, but the company has been investing heavily in battery research and advanced materials in recent years. Industry insiders believe this signals Huawei's intent to become a serious player in the EV battery space—especially as the demand for electric vehicles explodes across China and beyond.
While Toyota, Samsung SDI, and CATL are aiming to launch commercial solid-state batteries by 2027–2030, Huawei's announcement—if proven viable—could accelerate the competition drastically.
Could Huawei's EV battery change the future of electric vehicles?
There's no doubt that Huawei's claim—if validated and scaled—has the power to transform the EV industry. A battery that can deliver thousands of kilometers on a single charge and refuel in minutes would erase many of the current limitations of electric mobility.
That said, the road to mass adoption is filled with obstacles—from high costs and supply chain challenges to infrastructure needs and regulatory hurdles. Still, the potential is too big to ignore. Even if the real-world range falls short of the CLTC estimate, a 2,000+ km battery with a five-minute charge time is still revolutionary by today's standards.
Huawei's solid-state EV battery technology sounds like something out of the future—but it's here on paper. The company still needs to prove it can move from lab success to real-world EVs. But if it succeeds, this could mark a major leap forward in how we power our vehicles.

American companies in China are reporting record-low new investment plans for this year and declining confidence in their profitability, with uncertainty in US-China relations and President Donald Trump's tariffs their top concerns, according to a new survey. The companies are also challenged by China's slowing economy, where weak domestic demand and overcapacity in local industries are eroding profitability for the Americans. Businesses in China are less profitable now than they were years ago, but risks, including reputational risk, regulatory risk, and political risk, are increasing, said Sean Stein, the president of the US-China Business Council, a Washington-based group that represents American companies doing business in China, including major multinationals. The survey, conducted between March and May and drawing from 130 member companies, was released Wednesday. It came as the two countries clash over tariffs and non-tariff measures, including export controls on critical products such as rare-earth magnets and advanced computer chips. Following high-level talks in Geneva and London, US and Chinese officials agreed to pull back from sky-high tariffs and restrictions on exports, but uncertainty persists as the two sides are yet to hammer out a more permanent trade deal. Kyle Sullivan, vice president of business advisory services at the USCBC, said more than half of the companies in the survey indicated they do not have new investment plans in China at all this year. "That's a record high, Sullivan said, noting that it is a new development that we have not observed in previous surveys. Around 40 per cent of companies reported negative effects from US export control measures, with many experiencing lost sales, severed customer relationships, and reputational damage from being unreliable suppliers, according to the survey. Citing national security, the US government has banned exports to China of high-tech products, such as the most advanced chips, which could help boost China's military capabilities. Stein argued that export controls must be very carefully targeted, because businesses from Europe or Japan, or local businesses in China would immediately fill the void left by American companies. Silicon Valley chipmaker Nvidia won approval from the Trump administration to resume sales to China of its advanced H20 chips used to develop artificial intelligence, its CEO Jensen Huang announced on Monday, though the company's most powerful chips remain under US export control rules. While 82% of US companies reported profits in 2024, fewer than half are optimistic about the future in China, reflecting concerns over tariffs, deflation, and policy uncertainty, according to the survey. Also, a record high number of American businesses plan to relocate their business operations outside of China, Sullivan said, as 27% of the members indicated so, up from 19 per cent the year before. In a departure from past surveys, concerns over China's regulatory environment, including risks of intellectual property misuse and lack of market access, didn't make it to the top five concerns this year. That's likely a first, and not for a good reason, Stein said. It is not because things got dramatically better on the Chinese side, but the new challenges, often coming from the US, are now posing as much of a challenge, Stein said. Almost all the American companies said they cannot remain globally competitive without their Chinese operations. A survey from the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China in May found that European companies were cutting costs and scaling back investment plans in China as its economy slows and fierce competition drives down prices.

Jaishankar in China: A cooperative Beijing is desirable, but a less uncooperative one is India's best bet

Written by Udayan Das For the first time in five years, since the 2020 standoff along the Line of Actual Control, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar travelled to China and met President Xi Jinping, his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and Vice President Han Zheng, before heading off to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's Council of Foreign Ministers (SCO-CFM) meet. The meeting is consistent with the steps taken by New Delhi and Beijing since late last year to restore some normalcy to bilateral ties. This started with the Modi-Xi meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024, followed by a flurry of high-level meetings, including trips to China by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in December 2024 and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in June 2025. Evidently, we are witnessing the renegotiation of a new order on partly new foundations. The earlier order was facilitated through the Border Peace and Tranquillity Agreement in 1993, which agreed to incrementally resolve the boundary question through the maintenance of peace and status quo on the borders. As the treaty brought India and China to the table, it built a modicum of trust and transparency that allowed other avenues like trade to develop. This order, however, was broken with the skirmishes in Galwan five years ago. Compared to the presence of a bulwark of institutional commitments and operational trade, the new order possesses an unpredictability of conflict and weaponisation of trade. The road to a new arrangement, like most diplomatic formulations, would not be easy, quick or foolproof. The visit is one of the many steps necessary to create a positive foundation. The meeting indicates India's strategy of simultaneously cooperating and competing with China. There has always been a consensus that New Delhi and Beijing need not agree and cooperate on every issue. The optimal outcome for India would be to cooperate with China wherever possible and evade conflict entirely. Therefore, a sub-optimal outcome is more plausible for India, where they initiate piecemeal cooperation on immediate issues and simultaneously develop instruments that would restrict the chances of conflict. This would also allow both parties to find passages to de-escalate, in case a conflict breaks out. New Delhi has taken this route, evident from Jaishankar stating to his Chinese counterpart that the emerging foundation should be on the principle that 'differences should not become disputes, nor should competition ever become conflict'. There is a clear division of impending issues that need to be resolved rather quickly, while the rest are put on a slow burner. For India, there is a third kind as well: Issues that have a bearing on the relations but are extremely difficult to resolve, and as a result, remain undiscussed. The border question, in this context, remains the most significant and vexed. It is likely to be put aside for a while, again, as there are no immediate resolutions in sight. For India, the answer remains elusive to the question: How do you deal with a militarily superior power in a border conflict? India has initiated internal strengthening, but that is not going to provide results overnight. External intervention remains unreliable as this is strictly a bilateral issue where third parties would not invest or engage without interests. The plausible ways are to simultaneously keep closing the gap and engage with the rival via diplomatic mechanisms. As disengagement is underway at crucial junctures of Eastern Ladakh, the onus is now to arrange a modus vivendi. The issues that can be resolved quickly are in the domain of trade. China's curbs on exporting rare earth magnets are hurting India's automobile sector badly. The Indian government has rightly initiated incentives for home-grown solutions, but developing an alternative supply chain would take time and not immediately compensate for the Chinese withdrawals. EAM Jaishankar specifically brought up the issue of 'restrictive trade measures and roadblocks' that need to be discussed ahead. Finally, there are issues that are undiscussed, like the case of the China-Pakistan relationship and the issue of the Dalai Lama's succession. India's consistent stand on terrorism is commendable, but that is unlikely to have any effect on Beijing's relations with Islamabad. Irrespective of India's symbolic measures, influence or pressure, China and Pakistan would continue to work according to their realist calculations. It is unlikely that India would bring up the Dalai Lama in official discussions. While China has asserted its role in choosing the successor, India has stated that this remains an issue of cultural conventions and not the state. Despite this, China continues to be irked by the Dalai Lama being housed in Dharamsala, acknowledged as a spiritual leader by many in India. In the months to come, India and China are likely to engage further in the making of this new bilateral order. It will not be easy for New Delhi: It has to hold its ground on many issues, continuously strengthen itself internally, and find ways to engage with Beijing for mutual goals. A cooperative China is desirable, but a less uncooperative one is India's best bet to preserve its core interests. Tesla Model Y has just been launched in the Indian market. While India is busy in Juniper's welcome, the world is preparing to see the first glimpse of a new version of the Tesla Model Y with a longer wheelbase and six seats. Although the official entry of the model is still away, some leaked information about the car has shed light on quite a few details. The details of the new model have been sourced from documents filed within China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The new long-wheelbase iteration of the electric car is dubbed the Model Y L with three rows of seating. Along with more space and extra seats, this iteration will also bring more power. Diving into details, the new iteration of the car will have six seats, likely captain seats. To accommodate it, the car now has a length of 4,976 mm, which is 186 mm longer than the standard Model Y. Along with it, the height has increased by 44 mm. Since it's the long-wheelbase version, Tesla has extended the wheelbase to 3,040mm, or 150mm longer than the current five-seat Model Y. Along with the added length, the new Y L gets a few changes in aesthetics with a new design for the wheels, an updated spoiler, and new seats. Chances are, the car will likely get new paint scheme options as well. Based on the leaked documents, the Tesla Model Y L will also come with more power compared to the five-seat version. It will have an output of 455 hp, which is more than 443 hp on the five-seat version. This increased grunt might come in handy to handle the extra weight. Along with it, there are chances that there will be another seven-seat version of the car on the market. However, the launch timeline of both models is still unclear.
