Ukraine says 31 killed in July 31 Russian strike on Kyiv, including five children
Russia's attack ripped open a nine-storey residential building, wounding 159 people and claiming the lives of five children.
KYIV - Ukrainian rescue workers on Aug 1 uncovered the body of a two-year-old, as they finished work following
a Russian attack the day prior that killed 31 people in all.
Kyiv observed a day of mourning after the deadliest attack in the Ukrainian capital this year ripped open a nine-storey residential building, wounding 159 people and claiming the lives of five children.
'This despicable attack by Russia shows that additional pressure and sanctions on Moscow are necessary,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Aug 1, announcing rescue operations had wrapped up.
'We appreciate that (US) President (Donald) Trump, European leaders and our other partners clearly see what is happening and condemn Russia,' he added.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Aug 1 described the Russian attacks as 'depraved' and posted a picture of the bloc's flag at half mast.
'More weapons for Ukraine and tougher sanctions on Russia are the fastest way to end the war. Getting more air defences to Ukraine fast is our priority,' she added in a post.
Separately, one person was also killed in a Russian attack early on Aug 1 on Zaporizhzhia, in south-east Ukraine, the region's military administration said on Telegram.

Another was killed in the northeastern Kharkiv region, officials said, while the toll from another strike on July 31 – this time in Kramatorsk further south – rose to three.
The July 31 attack was among the deadliest the capital has seen since Russia launched its large-scale offensive in February 2022.
Mr Trump on July 31 blasted Russia's actions in Ukraine, suggesting that new sanctions against Moscow were coming.
'Russia – I think it's disgusting what they're doing. I think it's disgusting,' Mr Trump told journalists.
On July 28, the US leader issued a '10 or 12' day ultimatum for Moscow to halt its invasion, now in its fourth year, or face sanctions. AFP

[NEW YORK] Blackstone sold more than £1.5 billion (S$2.6 billion) in bonds backed by UK holiday parks operated by Haven, the largest ever pound-denominated commercial mortgage security since the 2008 financial crisis, according to a source with knowledge of the matter. The CMBS accounts for about half of a broader refinancing package for Haven, said the source, who asked not to be identified discussing private information. A spokesperson for Blackstone declined to comment. Bloomberg previously reported that Blackstone was in talks to issue the debt. The European market for commercial mortgage-backed securities is far smaller than its US counterpart, but has recently shown signs of a revival. Haven belongs to parent company Bourne Leisure, which Blackstone bought in 2021. South Korea says it has no written pact on US trade deal, Asia News
SEOUL - There is no written agreement yet on a trade deal between South Korea and the United States announced by President Donald Trump this week, the Asian nation's trade minister said on Friday (Aug 1). The US tariff on South Korean imports will be 15 per cent, Trump said after meeting its ministers on Wednesday, down from a threatened 25 per cent, but the US gave scarce details, apart from social media posts by him and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Speaking to reporters as he arrived home from a visit to Washington, Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo said the two sides had an oral negotiation because of time constraints. "What we felt during this negotiation is that the US trade environment is fundamentally changing. This is completely different from the first Trump term," Yeo said of the deal easing tension with a top-10 trading partner and key Asian ally. "I think we are entering a new normal era. So, although we have overcome this crisis, we cannot be relieved, because we do not know when we will face pressure from tariffs or non-tariff measures again." The White House, which issued factsheets on trade deals with Japan and the European Union a day after striking them, has not yet released a separate one on the pact with South Korea. Trump said South Korea would invest $350 (S$450 billion) billion in the United States in projects "owned and controlled by the United States" and selected by him. Lutnick said 90 per cent of profits from the investments would go to the American people, while White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said they would go to the US government to help repay debt. More discussions were necessary on the investment fund's profit structure, said Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan, who returned with Yeo. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered the construction of a freight station near the Chinese border to support a large-scale greenhouse farm project in the north-west, state-run media reported on Aug 2. Coming at a time when North Korea has been bolstering military and economic ties with Russia , particularly since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, observers are watching whether the move could lead to an uptick in trade with its traditional ally China, which has recently been sluggish. Mr Kim visited the region around Sinuiju on Aug 1, where severe flooding occurred in July 2024 after the Yalu River, which runs along the border with China, overflowed, according to the Korean Central News Agency. While inspecting embankment and farm construction, Mr Kim called for the creation of a 'comprehensive transport centre' with a new vegetable storehouse and processing facilities built around it, the official news agency said. The area around the Yalu River has long been prone to flooding during heavy rains, with widespread damage reported in 2024. But with residential buildings reportedly swiftly rebuilt, Mr Kim was quoted as saying such flood damage, once seen as inevitable, has 'became a past story'.
