EU envoy heads to Washington as trade deal deadline looms - Economy

Al-Ahram Weekly2 days ago
EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic said he will head to Washington Tuesday in a push to seal a trade deal with President Donald Trump's administration ahead of a July 9 negotiating deadline.
The European Commission, which conducts trade policy for the 27-nation bloc, has until Wednesday next week to reach a deal or see swingeing US tariffs kick in on a majority of its goods.
Sefcovic told reporters he aimed to hold meetings with his US counterparts in Washington on Wednesday and Thursday. "The ninth of July is around the corner," he said.
Since the United States observes the Independence Day public holiday on July 4, the two days will be critical for the European Union to snag a deal to avoid the sweeping levies.
If no agreement is reached, the default tariff on EU imports is expected to double to 20 percent or even higher -- Trump having at one point threatened 50 percent.
Sefcovic said he has held "intensive" and "very intense" discussions with his US counterparts, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
"Of course, we hope to see them in Washington, DC later this week, we know that there is the fourth of July on Friday, so it leaves us Wednesday and Thursday for eventual meetings, which we are planning right now," he told reporters in Brussels.
Sefcovic last met US negotiators face-to-face in Paris on the sidelines of an Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development meeting early in June, but he has spoken to his counterparts several times by phone in the past few months.
A technical EU delegation is already in Washington, Sefcovic said.
The EU commission has received "first drafts of the proposals for the eventual agreement in principle" that "we are working on", he added.
The EU's biggest economies, France and Germany, last week urged a quick agreement -- indicating they could back an unbalanced accord with some level of US tariffs on EU goods.

EU Sets 90% Emissions Cut by 2040

Israa Farhan The European Commission is set to propose a new legally binding target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, marking a key milestone in the European Union's long-term strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. This anticipated legislation follows a 2023 recommendation by the Commission calling for a 90% cut in emissions compared to 1990 levels. The new proposal, expected on Wednesday, would turn that advisory target into a binding commitment for all EU member states. Currently, the EU mandates a 55% reduction in harmful emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The latest data from May shows that the bloc is on track to reach a 54% reduction by the end of the decade, narrowing the gap to the official 2030 target. The European Commission has urged national governments to fully implement their climate strategies to ensure that emission goals are met on schedule. These climate targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, which seeks to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. As part of its obligations under the agreement, the EU must submit a comprehensive climate action plan through 2035 before the COP30 UN Climate Conference in Brazil this November. The overarching goal remains achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, balancing any emissions released with those absorbed naturally or through advanced technologies. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence"

EU says ready to facilitate return to Iran nuclear talks - Region

The EU's top diplomat told Iran's foreign minister Tuesday that Brussels is willing to facilitate a return to negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme after US and Israeli strikes. "Negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme should restart as soon as possible" and "cooperation" with the International Atomic Energy Agency must resume, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas wrote on X after a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. "The EU is ready to facilitate this." Negotiations on ending Iran's nuclear programme should restart as soon as possible Cooperation with @iaeaorg must resume The EU is ready to facilitate this Any threats to pull out of the non-proliferation treaty don't help to lower tensions This is what I told @araghchi today — Kaja Kallas (@kajakallas) July 1, 2025 Kallas further warned Tehran that "any threats to pull out of the non-proliferation treaty don't help to lower tensions." The call came after Aragchi ruled out a out a quick resumption of talks with the United States and said Tehran will first need assurances it will not be attacked again. The United States and Iran were holding nuclear talks when Israel hit Iranian nuclear sites and military infrastructure. The United States joined the assault by bombing three nuclear sites -- Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan -- on June 21. The EU has long sought to play a mediation role with Iran. The 27-nation bloc was a signatory -- and facilitator -- of a 2015 deal between Iran and international powers over Tehran's nuclear programme. US President Donald Trump abandoned that deal in 2018.
