Six hay fever hacks to see you through the season

Telegraph17-03-2025
It's that time again. You may still be sporting a scarf but, sadly, it's also time to start thinking about hay fever. Tree pollen has started to circulate even earlier this season and will be followed by grass and weed pollen in the coming months. Scientists have warned that it's going to be a 'high severity' season, thanks to the recent warm and dry weather.
For the around one in four Britons who face runny noses and water eyes in response to the allergen, it means it's time to reach for some tissues and a daily antihistamines. However, there's lots more that can be done to ease these debilitating symptoms.
'There are many ways you can help to relieve and manage hay fever symptoms including home remedies and simple lifestyle hacks,' says Claire Nevinson, a superintendent pharmacist at Boots. These are her top tips to stop hay fever in its tracks.
Rinse your nose with salt water
Cost: Free
Difficult ranking: 2/5
Hay fever occurs when the immune system mistakes pollen – a harmless powder released by grass, trees and weeds – as a threat and releases histamines and other chemicals to ward them off. This leads to symptoms that range from being mild but irritating to severe.
'Rinsing of nasal passages with salt water can help flush out pollen and other allergens trapped in your nose,' Nevinson explains. 'This can help to relieve congestion such as a runny nose and sneezing.'
You can either purchase a saline nasal spray at your local pharmacy or create a saline wash at home by adding one teaspoon of salt and one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to a pint of clean water and stir. 'The water should be from your cold tap, boiled and then cooled to room temperature,' Nevinson notes.
Then, stand over the sink and pour some of it into the cupped palm of your hand. 'Sniff the solution from your palm into one nostril and repeat for at least three times in each nostril. Blow your nose gently after using the wash to help rinse the nasal passage. Be sure to discard any leftover liquid and prepare a fresh solution each time you douche.'
2. Rub Vaseline on your nose
Cost: £1.80
Difficult ranking: 1/5
Hay fever symptoms start when pollen enters the nose and lands on the damp lining of the nasal passage, binding to a type of immune cells (mast cells), leading to explosive sneezing.
To stop pollen from getting into your airways in the first place and triggering a cascade of symptoms, apply some petroleum jelly around the nostrils, Nevinson recommends. As it is sticky, it can effectively catch allergens before they can trigger a reaction.
'Vaseline around your nose is a great way to trap the pollen,' Nevinson says. As an added bonus, it can also help to relieve dry and uncomfortable skin from repetitive nose blowing, she notes.
3. Dry laundry indoors
Cost: Free
Difficult ranking: 1/5
Avoiding pollen is the obvious way to ease hay fever symptoms but is hard to do in practice. One way to effectively reduce your exposure is to stop hanging your clothes outside to dry.
While warm weather is ideal for drying washing outside, it also tends to correlate with a high pollen count. 'If you are drying laundry outdoors, there's a chance that pollen could enter the house on clothing,' Nevinson says.
'Try to dry your laundry indoors instead to help relieve symptoms.'
4. Keep your windows shut
Cost: Free
Difficult ranking: 1/5
'Exposure to pollen is what causes hay fever symptoms, so one of the best things to do is to limit your exposure,' Nevinson notes.
'When indoors, you can do this by keeping windows and doors shut as much as possible,' she says. This is especially effective in the early morning, when pollen is released, and during the early evening, when pollen counts are typically at their highest.

Food for thought... how we comfort eat our way to 344,064 calories a year

We have all reached for a bar of chocolate or packet of crisps after a trying day. But our fondness for a snack when feeling down is adding many thousands of extra calories to our diets, a poll has revealed. A quarter of Britons questioned in the survey said they would describe themselves as an emotional eater – admitting to eating 28,672 'comfort calories' a month, or 344,064 a year. Almost nine in ten of those surveyed said they had eaten food out of boredom or sadness, despite not being hungry. Many said they felt guilty as a result. However, 78 per cent said they wanted to reduce the amount they eat because of feeling sensitive to weight gain. The most popular emotional nibbles were bags of crisps, chocolate bars, biscuits, bananas, buttered toast and instant noodles. Nuts, cheese, sausage rolls, and crumpets were also common snacks chosen to give us an emotional boost. Somewhat depressingly, four in ten of the 20,000 participants surveyed described food as their only real enjoyment in life. Psychologist Dr Becky Spelman said: 'Emotional eating is deeply rooted in how we were raised. 'Many of us were given treats as a reward for being good or to soothe us when we were upset, so food becomes more than just fuel; it's a source of emotional comfort.' She said recognising the pattern was the first step towards replacing habits with something that 'genuinely nurtures us emotionally'. 'Real change begins with kindness, with treating yourself like someone you care about, even when you're struggling,' Dr Spelman added. 'That shift in perspective is what helps break the cycle.' Dr Babak Ashrafi from Superdrug Online Doctor, which commissioned the survey, said: 'With the latest Government stats showing six in ten of us are obese or overweight, it seems many Brits need to break the cycle of emotional eating.'

The 'miracle in a bottle' Nivea anti-wrinkle serum is said to 'reverse skin age in two weeks'

This anti-ageing serum has been crafted with a break-through ingredient after 15 years of scientific research. The world of anti-ageing skincare is packed with lotions and potions. More choice is a bit of a double-edged sword, as that means it can be hard to find one that actually works. However, it looks like Nivea has cracked the secret to "youthful, plumped" skin with its Cellular Epigenetics Age Rewind Face Serum that costs £34.99 for a 30ml on Amazon and Boots. Formulated after 15 years of research, this serum has been crafted with break-through ingredient Epicelline, an ingredient in epigenetics science that is said to "rewind skin age in two weeks." It does so by 'reactivating' older skin cells' youth functions through patented age technology, making them act more like the younger versions of themselves, leading to a "100 percent proven more youthful appearance." That's not all, it also contains three types of hyaluronic acid to help hydrate the skin, targeting 10 signs of ageing including wrinkles, firmness, radiance, moisture, elasticity and plumpness. It's not the only product backed by science, as Boots No7 Future Renew Serum boasts the world's first peptide technology to "reverse" the signs of ageing, with a 50ml costing £47.95. Another powerful, yet proven to work, product on the market is Medik8's Crystal Retinal range that is priced from £45. Using the brand's patented vitamin A derivative, it is said to act "11 times faster" than regular retinol. As for the Nivea Epigenetics Serum, it doesn't currently have any reviews on Amazon, but we have spotted it with two five-star reviews on the Boots website. One shopper said: "I very rarely leave a review but this is a miracle in a bottle. I am over 50 and have tried many many lotions and potions to help with ageing and over the years I've spent a lot. "But this little bottle is amazing. I have literally used it 3 days so far and I can see a noticeable difference. This is now my new go to serum. Amazing." The second read: "Absolutely love this product and the texture when applying it onto the skin. It is super lightweight and leaves my skin feeling plump and hydrated after the first use. I am excited to see further results as I continue to use the product." While we haven't spotted any negative reviews, it is worth noting that, unlike a few other Amazon purchases, it is not available for next day delivery, with purchases taking a couple of days to arrive. Beauty deal of the week YSL Black Opium remains an iconic perfume - and we know where to bag the newest edition for its cheapest price. The YSL BLack Opium Le Parfum offers a more vanilla-heavy fragrance that has been hailed as "intoxicating" in reviews, with a 50ml now half-price at Boots after being dropped from £115 to £57.50. Massive saving aside, it's the cheapest it can be bought for at the moment, as rival retailers Superdrug, Lookfantastic and The Perfume Shop still stock it at full-price. This interpretation of the iconic perfume was only launched in 2022, with its original floral gourmand fragrance still offering its famed notes that include pear accord, green mandarin, orange flower petals, jasmine sambac and cinnamon. However, the iconic coffee accord has been twisted with four different, yet still complimentary, notes of vanilla, which is said to be its most important ingredient, to create an "unexpected smoothness, with uncompromising intensity." Meanwhile, the unique glossy bottle that has been crafted from a precious black stone, with its dazzling glitter emblem at the heart, eludes to the luxuriousness of the fragrance contained within. As for the YSL Black Opium Le Parfum, Boots shoppers wanting to take advantage of the half-price discount will be glad to hear it has amassed a 4.7 rating from thousands of customers who say it "lasts all day" and "literally turns heads" when it is worn. One five-star review read: "I love the fragrance. I used a lot the first time, not realising how intense it was. It lasts all day and continues to smell great. I literally turn heads when I wear it." Don't miss Boots' half-price discount on the YSL Black Opium Le Parfum (50ml) that is now £57.50, down from £115. On Trustpilot, quite a few beauty enthusiasts have more mixed opinions on the skincare brand in general. One shopper who left a three-star review did urge the firm to "revise" its range of products. They added: "They didn't help me to moisturise my face even if it's states that the cream is moisturising, lol. Nevertheless, I should pay homage to this company as it has a vast line of different products." Meanwhile, a few others did leave the company quite a few negative comments, with stating "formula changes" to their favourite products, such as the Nivea Crème, and customer service as reasons for their feedback. Mum demonstrates 'ultimate' way to put sunscreen on kids with no mess

A mum has shared her 'ultimate' hack to apply sunscreen to kids - and it's so simple. The tip has since gone viral, and people can't believe they never thought of it before Sun protection is crucial throughout the year, but it becomes particularly important during the summer months. Even on overcast days, our skin is still vulnerable to sunlight exposure, making it essential to maintain protection. ‌ However, ensuring that children wear sunscreen can be a challenge. Like many things, kids often resist having lotion applied to them - and it's understandably unpleasant to be slathered in cold cream. ‌ Fortunately, a woman has come forward with her "ultimate mum hack" to alleviate this parental stress. Ru, who goes by @ruamine on TikTok, shared her ingenious tip online, and it quickly went viral. She claims it's the "best" method for applying sunscreen to children – straightforward and mess-free. ‌ In her video, Ru demonstrates how she dispenses some lotion onto a makeup brush and then uses it to gently apply the sunscreen to her child's skin. This technique not only simplifies the process but also helps prevent any tantrums. The video also shows that this hack allows for even coverage, ensuring all areas are shielded from the sun. It's a softer approach to the task and appears to be very effective. ‌ Since Ru posted her sunscreen application hack, it has received over 100,000 likes, with many viewers praising the idea. One individual commented: "Very good idea." The NHS warns that sunburn can increase your risk of skin cancer, and it's crucial to remember that it can occur in the UK as well, even on cloudy days. Tanning is not considered safe or healthy, and the advice is to find a balance between protecting your skin and getting sufficient vitamin D from sunlight. Experts recommend seeking shade during peak sunlight hours, which in the UK are from 11am to 3pm, from March to October. In addition to using sunscreen and wearing protective clothing, the NHS also stresses the importance of taking special care with children. For sun protection, Britons should use sunscreen with at least SPF 30. For those spending extended time in the sun, it's suggested to apply sunscreen twice: once 30 minutes before going out and again just before stepping outside.
