Bruno Damiani's 10th-minute penalty kick proved just enough as the Union recorded a 1-0 road victory over the Chicago Fire on Wednesday. Philadelphia has strengthened its position atop the MLS table by virtue of its 8-0-3 mark over the last 11 matches.
Damiani, who joined the Union for a club-record fee in February, is expected to contribute given that striker Tai Baribo is nursing a calf injury. Baribo leads the Union with 13 goals, including one in his club's 2-2 draw against Columbus on May 10.
In addition to Baribo, Quinn Sullivan, Nathan Harriel and Jakob Glesnes will be out for the Union on Sunday. Sullivan and Harriel will be competing with the U.S. men's national team in the Gold Cup, while Glesnes will serve a one- match suspension for yellow card accumulation.
Frankie Westfield is dealing with an ankle injury and Olivier Mbaizo and Mikael Uhre have adductor injuries and are expected to sit out on Sunday.
"We don't have almost half the squad," midfielder Jovan Lukic said, per the Philadelphia Inquirer. "But I think everybody is doing an amazing job. Everybody is ready for these kinds of moments, even the guys who don't have too minutes this season."
Columbus' Jacen Russell-Rowe scored two of his team's three first-half goals in a 3-1 home victory over the Atlanta United on Wednesday.
Rowe scored in the 32nd and 42nd minutes while making his first start for the Crew , who have won two in a row overall and sport a 6-1-4 record at home.
"If you remember the games that we played, we had many chances at certain moments and we score," Columbus coach Wilfried Nancy said. "The game is about cycles. Sometimes we cannot explain. Sometimes we can struggle to score an easy tap-in, and sometimes we can score really complex goals. This is football.
"The most important for me is to be able to attack the box as many as possible. The fact that we're able to do that, I'm confident for the rest."
Columbus' Daniel Gazdag, however, remains in search of his first goal since being acquired in April. He is the Union's all-time leading goal scorer.

"Lionel Messi Playing With Statues, Not Teammates": Zlatan Ibrahimovic Tears Into Inter Miami

Lionel Messi 's PSG reunion in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 clash with Inter Miami turned out to be a nightmare. The UEFA Champions League winners taught the MLS side a big lesson on how to play football, securing a 4-0 win to qualify for the quarter-finals. Messi himself looked on song, orchestrating passes and building moves for his team, but Inter Miami, overall, just weren't a match for PSG. Be it attack of defence, the MLS club could hardly trouble the men from Paris. The result of the match saw Messi being trolled, with many fans saying that the Argentine great is well past his prime. However, Messi's former Barcelona teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic wasn't in agreement. In a chat with Foot Mercato, Ibrahimovic tore into Messi's Inter Miami teammates, saying the PSG match made him feel like the 8-time Ballon d'Or winner was playing with statues and not humans. "Messi's defeat? No, no, don't talk about the defeat as if it were his fault! Messi didn't lose, Inter Miami did! Have you seen the team? Messi plays with statues, not teammates! If he was in a real team, in Paris, Manchester, in any of the big teams, you'd have seen the real lion. "Messi only plays because he loves the game, because he can still do what 99% of players can't! But he's surrounded by those who run around like they're carrying bags of cement! Zlatan also criticised those questioning Messi, saying the standard of players he was with and the level of the league he features is extremely low. "There are no coaches, no stars, not even players who understand how to move without the ball! You want to blame Messi? When he plays with Ronaldo, with Mbappé, with Haaland, with Zlatan. Then you can talk! But today? No, no, no, no, no. The former Sweden International feels Messi still has what it takes to perform at the top level, but he needs to be in a better team. "But be careful, if you give him a real team, he'll burn down the stadium again! Because, quite simply. Messi is still Messi, but today? It's not his defeat, it's the defeat of Inter Miami and of football."

Freese stands tall as US edge Costa Rica on penalties to reach Gold Cup semis

Goalkeeper Matthew Freese produced a penalty shootout masterclass to lead the United States past Costa Rica 4-3 on spot-kicks and into the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals on Sunday in Minneapolis. Following a dramatic 2-2 draw in regulation, Freese made three clutch saves in the shootout—denying Juan Pablo Vargas, Francisco Calvo, and Andy Rojas - to secure a semifinal showdown against Guatemala. "On the plane ride over here to Minnesota I was studying the penalties so I was ready for it if we needed it. The match had its share of twists. Costa Rica struck first in the 12th minute when Max Arfsten brought down Kenneth Vargas in the box, and Calvo calmly buried the resulting penalty. The US nearly equalized when Malik Tillman earned a spot-kick of his own, but his effort hit the post. Live Events The breakthrough came in the 43rd minute, when Diego Luna's shot deflected off Alexis Gamboa and into the net. The US surged ahead early in the second half as Arfsten, having earlier conceded the penalty, made amends with a composed low finish after a Tillman assist. — GoldCup (@GoldCup) Chris Richards nearly added a third, but Keylor Navas kept Costa Rica alive with a brilliant save. That proved pivotal, as Carlos Mora's dazzling dribble led to Alonso Martinez 's 71st-minute equalizer. Martinez nearly won it late after beating Freese with a beautiful curling kick, but his shot struck the post, sending the tie to penalties - where Freese stood tall. The US have now advanced to the semifinals in 17 of 18 all-time Gold Cup appearances, maintaining a remarkable level of consistency in the tournament. This latest run marks their 13th consecutive semis berth, a streak that began after their last quarter-final exit in 2000, when they were eliminated by Colombia on penalty kicks.

After another round of successful penalties, Luc De Fougerolles struck the post for Canada. Morales then stepped up and coolly placed his shot just off-center as Dayne St. Clair dove the wrong way, clinching the upset. The result marks Canada's second consecutive Gold Cup quarterfinal exit.
