Sister act: Whoopi Goldberg gives Super Netball a boost with global broadcast deal

Hollywood icon Whoopi Goldberg is taking Australian netball to the world with her new global sport television network dedicated exclusively to women's sport.
Netball Australia and the All Women's Sport Network (AWSN) announced on Monday a multi-year broadcast deal to show Super Netball matches to more than 65 new countries.

Goldberg said she was 'so proud' to see the Super Netball competition join AWSN.
'I think y'all are terrific,' she said in an Instagram video. 'I just watched you play and I see that your fans are really loving you, so we want to make sure that we put you everywhere in the world so that everybody knows about you.'
Goldberg and AWSN co-founder George Chung launched the network at the end of 2024, with Goldberg saying her motivation for the project was sparked by seeing women's sport not receive the same coverage as their male counterparts.

'I knew that if I couldn't find these sports and watch the amazing female athletes playing them, others weren't finding them either,' she told Forbes at the time. 'I really hope shining a light on women's sports will help elevate female athletes around the world.'
Netball Australia's chief executive, Stacey West, acknowledged the opportunities the new partnership would bring the league and netball more broadly.
'This breakthrough deal puts netball on screens across the globe and cements our place at the forefront of women's sport,' West said. 'AWSN shares our vision of taking women's sport to new heights. Together, we're creating a platform for our athletes and game to shine like never before.'
The response to the announcement was swift and positive, with former Diamond and AFLW player Sharni Layton commenting on Goldberg's video saying: 'This is next level. Netball is going [up].'

Netball Australia chair and former Diamond Liz Ellis shared the video, adding that Super Netball was 'going places'.
The partnership is inked through to 2027 and will result in 41 Super Netball matches being broadcast to the network's 900m-strong global audience. Other leagues featured on the network includes Australia's WNBL, as well as the WTA, Uefa Women's Nations League, Sweden's Damallsvenskan, European cricket, roller derby and softball.
The WNBL joined the AWSN in November 2024, with then league boss, Christy Collier-Hill, saying: 'Reaching fans globally and showcasing our incredible athletes, clubs, and competition is a major milestone for the league.'
It's a much needed win for Super Netball and Netball Australia, which have faced extensive off-court dramas in recent years, and will help to solidify the revival the sport is undergoing in Australia.
The partnership also points to the continued growth of women's sport, and the business opportunities it offers.

Captain Dan Sheehan, Tomos Williams and Elliot Daly scored in a first half largely dominated by the profligate hosts in terms of territory but not on the scoreboard. Advertisement The Lions led 21-7 at the break, the Force's own skipper Nic White crossing for their only try in front of 46,656, a record crowd for a rugby union game in Perth. Beyond the break, it was all Lions, though. Williams scored a blistering, breakaway second while Henry Pollock was in the sin-bin. The moment was overshadowed by Williams' worrying looking injury in the process. Garry Ringrose, the towering Joe McCarthy, a second for Daly and a last-gasp score for Alex Mitchell brought up the 50-point mark as the Lions blew away their hosts. A flawed start and a worrying amount of possession and opportunity for the Force gave way to a strong win in the end for the Lions. Advertisement McCarthy was a compelling force up front as the Lions backline eventually ran amok. They will sweat on what looked like a hamstring injury for Williams, who had been playing like a thoroughbred. Jamison Gibson-Park has not yet played for these Lions, although he is expected to be available for midweek in Brisbane. It is a worry for coach Andy Farrell. The Lions got off to a flyer on the night after a sustained bout of possession when Russell dipped into his box of tricks with a sumptuous cross-kick to Sheehan on the right wing. Sheehan tapped to James Lowe, who gave it back to his captain for the score. The creator banged over the conversion. Advertisement A blistering beginning, but there was trouble ahead. Just as the Lions scored with their first attack, so too did the Force. Again it was a slow turning of the screw before White sprung from the bottom of a ruck just short the line. Ben Donaldson was good with the conversion. The Force were heavy underdogs but for 40 minutes they played with a confidence that belied their poor season in Super Rugby. They repeatedly got into the Lions 22 and time and again the tourists got pinged. The Lions conceded five penalties in 80 minutes against the Pumas in Dublin. They conceded four in 10 minutes in Perth. Sheehan was warned about the ill discipline of his team as early as the 11th minute. This is not how it was supposed to be. Advertisement If the Force had been more accurate they would have capitalised on all those entries into the Lions 22. They won a penalty and went for touch on the right, but nothing came of it. They won another penalty and went for touch on the left, but nothing came of that either. Credit the tenacity of the Lions defence too, but they were doing much of it. When they got ball in hand, they were the polar opposite of the Force. It must have been a sickener for the hosts when the visitors lifted the siege in their own territory only to score straight away. A break from Ireland's Josh van der Flier, a big bust from England's Pollock and a support line from Wales' Williams and over they went. Ruthless. More Force wastefulness followed and soon another Lions try arrived. Advertisement Like the first, it was Russell at the root of it, his tap penalty, break and offload putting Daly over. A minor scuffle broke out in the aftermath. The Force's angst carried on. Once more they had a close-range lineout - and a one-man advantage after Pollock saw yellow at breakdown - but they could not execute. A 14-point half-time lead for the Lions felt out of kilter with the flow of the game. It got better, though. A lot better. Even with Pollock in the bin, the Lions struck out for a majestic score from inside their own 22. Hansen got them moving but it was Lowe and Williams who did a supreme job in pulling the trigger, running and offloading before the scrum-half went over for his second score. Advertisement The downside - and it was a significant one - was the injury he picked up in the act of scoring. It had everyone in the media seats scurrying around determining the whereabouts of Scotland's Ben White (handily placed in New Zealand) and England's Jack van Poortvliet (not so handy in Argentina). Ringrose went over for try number five after fine work by Hansen, and the combative and impressive McCarthy went over for number six after more terrific work from Pollock. Hammer time as Dolphins soar back into NRL top eight
Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow has delivered a fullback masterclass with a four-try haul in the Dolphins' 50-28 defeat of South Sydney. The No.1 ran amok in his 100th NRL game as the Dolphins reached 50 points for the third time in four games and consigned the Rabbitohs to a fifth straight loss. Halfback Isaiya Katoa had four try assists, while Tabuai-Fidow's display was timely on the day incumbent Queensland fullback Kalyn Ponga was ruled out of next Wednesday's State of Origin decider with a foot injury. Tabuai-Fidow played wing in the Maroons' series-levelling victory but, after 11 tries in nine Origin games on the flanks, has done all he can to show coach Billy Slater he's ready to wear the No.1. It was all the Dolphins after that, Jeremy Marshall-King raiding from dummy-half to score, then Katoa exploding through the line and producing a no-look assist for Tabuai-Fidow. The pair combined again in similar fashion, with only a desperate Jamie Humphries tripping up the Dolphins fullback as he pinned his ears back for the line. Herbie Farnworth had more joy, though, finding open space before Katoa floated a pass perfectly for Nikorima to score. Katoa tantalised again with a pinpoint pass that dragged the Rabbitohs' defensive line out of shape, Farnworth's quick offload setting up Jake Averillo. Nikorima limped off but the Dolphins weren't done, Averillo trickling a kick back in-field that was scooped up by Tabuai-Fidow to create a 30-6 halftime lead. The No.1 completed his hat-trick when he picked up another loose ball spilled in a marking contest to seemingly kill the contest with 30 minutes still on the clock. But Walker stepped through to create a try for Tallis Duncan and stop the rot, and the visitors had their tails up when that pair combined again to give the back-rower a double. Tabuai-Fidow settled it once and for all, stripping Davvy Moale on his own 30-metre line, darting sideways into space, then cruising uninterrupted for a fourth try. Wighton and Moale still had time for tries, while rookie Aublix Tawha was reported and earnt the ire of Mitchell after tackling him before he'd caught a high ball. The Dolphins had the final say, Kurt Donoghoe snatching a Humphries intercept as the Dolphins raised the bat again. British and Irish Lions dominate Force in the opening game of their Australian tour
