His intellect, wisdom and scholarly nature are also widely admired, PM Modi said on X.
Narasimha Rao's premiership during 1991-96 is considered the most defining period in the country's economic journey as, with India facing a serious balance of payment crisis, he unshackled the state control on economy and opened it to private players. This paved the way for a long era of growth better than what was seen in the past.
P.V. Narasimha Rao was given the country's highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna, posthumously by the Modi government last year.

'Mann ki Baat': Be vigilant to protect Constitution, says PM Modi

During his monthly 'Mann ki Baat' address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled the ordeals that the country and its citizens had to go through during the 1975 National Emergency and emphasised that people should be always vigilant to protect the Constitution. Modi played three audio clips - of former prime minister Morarji Desai, former deputy PM Babu Jagjivan Ram and former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee - on the excesses of the Emergency and the expression of public anger in the elections after it was lifted. "With the power of public participation, big crises can be confronted," Modi said, before sharing the words of Desai. Modi alleged that those who had imposed Emergency "not only murdered our constitution but also had the intention to keep the judiciary as their slave". He referred to the atrocities on people and the handcuffing of socialist leader George Fernandes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Chuck Norris Begs Seniors: Avoid These 3 Foods Like The Plague Roundhouse Provisions Learn More Undo Recalling the 50th anniversary of the Emergency that fell on June 25, Modi hailed the people who fought it bravely.

Bend it like Bodoland! PM hails BTR's transformation

1 2 Guwahati: PM Modi on Sunday said Assam's Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), which was once known for conflicts, is now being recognised for the footballing abilities of its youth. Speaking during his monthly broadcast programme of 'Mann Ki Baat', the PM, in its 123rd episode, referred to the restoration of peace in BTR, saying, "Bodoland stands with a new identity in front of the nation. The energy in the youth and their confidence is most evident on the football field." BTR comprises of five districts — Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri and Tamulpur. Highlighting young footballers from the region, who have overcame numerous hardships and challenges to excel on the field, the PM spoke about the Bodoland CEM (Chief Executive Member's) Cup, currently taking place in BTR, saying, "not just a tournament, it has become a celebration of unity and hope". "More than 3,700 teams, around 70,000 players — and among them, a large number of our daughters, too, have participated! These statistics tell the story of a big change in Bodoland," Modi said. Recalling the days when Bodoland was known for conflicts and limited opportunities the PM pointed out that footballers from Bodoland were now gaining recognition at higher levels, specifically mentioning Halicharan Narzary, Durga Boro, Apurna Narzary and Manabir Basumatary. "Many of them, trained with limited resources, paved their way through challenges, and today, their names are an inspiration to the younger lot," Modi said. He said, "Picture this — the morning sun touches the hills, its light slowly spilling into the plains. As the day breaks, a wave of football enthusiasts marches forward. The whistle blows and within moments, the ground erupts in cheers and slogans. With every pass, every goal, the excitement builds. You must be wondering… what a beautiful world that is." CM Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the PM's broadcast on X and wrote, "The Bodoland CEM Cup — unthinkable before in this area — is a manifestation of how with the right leadership, the power of our youth can be harnessed to exploit talents instead of terror."

Meghalaya's Eri Silk earns praise from PM

1 2 Shillong: PM Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' broadcast on Sunday celebrated Meghalaya's unique Eri silk, which has recently received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) Tag. "Eri silk is not just a fabric; it is a heritage of Meghalaya, lovingly preserved and enriched over generations, especially by the Khasi community," said the PM. He noted its distinct production process, which is entirely non-violent, earning it the name 'Ahimsa Silk', as the silkworms are not harmed in its extraction. This method involves allowing the silkworms to naturally emerge from their cocoons before the silk is harvested. "Nowadays, the demand for such products is rising rapidly in the world, which do not involve violence and do not have any ill effect on nature. Hence, Eri silk of Meghalaya is a perfect product for the global market," the PM underscored. He further said, "This silk keeps you warm in winters and cool in summers, making it ideal for diverse climates and expanding its appeal in both national and international markets." Calling upon the nation to embrace Khadi, handlooms and handicrafts, the PM Modi reiterated the spirit of 'Vocal for Local' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan'. Recently, the PM had thanked CM Conrad Sangma for having presented him with a piece of 'Ryndia Silk' fabric, a symbol of Meghalaya's cultural heritage and pride. "Your thoughtfulness is touching and is deeply appreciated," the PM wrote to Conrad. Conrad, in turn, expressed his gratitude to the PM. "Hon'ble PM, Sh. @narendramodi ji in his #mannkibaat2025 episode makes special mention of #Meghalaya's recently GI tagged Eri Silk also called Ahimsa Silk owing to its cruelty-free and natural production method. A great encouragement to our heritage textile weavers. Thank you Hon'blePM!"
