Dad tragically dies saving family from horror floods as 27 kids still missing

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Dad Julian Ryan was praised as a 'hero' by his family, who said his death in the Texas floods has left 'an unfillable void in all our lives' - a GoFundMe has been organised to support his family
A dad tragically died saving his family from the harrowing floods in Texas where at least 27 children are still missing.
Relatives of "true hero" Julian Ryan confirmed the dad had given his life to save his family during flooding along the Guadalupe River in Kerrville, northwest of San Antonio, on July 4. Authorities said 27 girls remain unaccounted for after flood water swept into the Mystic Christian summer camp located close to the river.

On a GoFundMe page, Julian's family said: "It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the unexpected and tragic passing of our beloved Julian Ryan on July 4th, 2025.

"Julian, his fiancé, kids, and mother were awakened when water came rushing into their home. Julian jumped into action to protect and save his family and get them to safety.
"Julian gave his life for his family, passing as a true hero. While his family is eternally grateful for his sacrifice, they are shattered by their loss. Julian was a beloved son, father, fiancé, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend to so many, and his sudden departure has left an unfillable void in all our lives."
Since being set up, the GoFundMe campaign has raised $10,080 (£7,381), surpassing the $8,000 (£5,858) target. Money from the fundraiser will go towards financially assisting his family.
The Guadalupe River rose more than 20ft in less than two hours while hundreds of children were celebrating Independence Day in the US. Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring Jr warned it would be a tough day for many across the state and expressed his gratitude for emergency services. He added: "People need to know, today will be a hard day. It will be a hard day."
He thanked people around the county before adding: "I'm thankful you're here. Today will be a hard day. Please pray for our community."
Search teams have attempted rescues in what they called "a very harsh environment" and managed to save some people who climbed up trees in a bid to escape the flood waters.
Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice said rescuers were attempting to identify heat sources in the flooded area. He added: "I do want to encourage folks with road damage, even though a road may be open, please use extreme caution. If water does get under the road, we are seeing a lot of debris, a lot of asphalt that is washing up, so there could be some other damaged areas."

Terrifying moment war zone-like mass shooting leaves three dead in Philadelphia

A mass shooting that broke out in Philadelphia and left three people dead and 10 injured appeared like a scene out of a war zone. CCTV footage from outside a home showed more than a half dozen people taking cover behind a short wall on the porch as countless gunshots rang out. The 20-second Ring camera clip showed women and teenagers taking cover on top of each other and squirming while at least two men stood up with guns and opened fire toward the street. Others could be seen hiding behind cars across the street. Gunfire erupted on the 1500 block of South Etting Street in the Grays Ferry neighborhood just before 1am on Monday. Police were patrolling the area as people gathered and played loud music, when dozens of shots were fired. Three men, aged 19, 23 and 24, were killed in the massacre. Among those who were injured were a 15-year-old girl, two 17-year-old boys and a 19-year-old man in critical condition. Other victims aged 18 to 24 suffered more minor injuries. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel condemned the perpetrators for engaging in the shootout with children nearby, and said it was 'hard to understand'. 'You see the size of this block – individuals just shooting randomly into houses, into cars,' said Bethel, according to WPVI. 'I mean, this is coward, wannabe thug stuff.' He added that 'we will get to the root cause and we will bring those individuals to justice'. Police have apprehended at least one person with a weapon. The shooting was 'past frustrating' for Tyrique Glasgow, who is executive director of Young Chances Foundation, which works to end violence and give young men opportunities in Grays Ferry. Glasgow said he knows some of the victims. More Trending 'They are working to get jobs and going to vocational school, and to have their lives stopped by gun violence is something that is frustrating and painful,' he told the news outlet. The shooting happened during a community cookout. 'We are going to come together and clean it up, but the blood and the trash and the food and the activities that we are supposed to have today for our summer camp, we had to put on pause today,' Glasgow said. It happened after a violent Fourth of July weekend, with 46 people shot from Friday to Monday, according to Bethel. Girl, 8, killed after illegal firework blasted toward her

An eight-year-old girl has died after an illegal fireworks display went awry and shot toward and struck her. Jasmine Nguyen was standing near a family friend who lit the illegal firecrackers on the Fourth of July in Buena Park, California, police said. 'A large illegal fireworks display, which was placed in the street by the homeowner, failed and began misfiring toward the residence where the child was,' stated the Buena Park Police Department. 'This caused other illegal fireworks to ignite, which were near the child and others.' Officers 'observed family members frantically carrying a child into a residence' and quickly assisted and found that she was injured from the fireworks, according to the department. Jasmine was rushed late Friday to UCI Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Other people around Jasmine were not seriously hurt. Fire and bomb squad investigators determined that many of the fireworks used were illegal, according to the police department. Earl Decastro, 46, was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, police Lieutenant Jon-Michael Shaddow told the Orange County Register. He was out on a $25,000 bail as of Sunday. More Trending Charges against Decastro are pending a review by the county district attorney's office. On Sunday, a man who answered the door at Decastro's home on Cornflower Circle on Sunday afternoon told the newspaper that he would not speak and is 'grieving right now' and 'it's a really hard time for him'. A makeshift memorial for Jasmine, who was from nearby Anaheim, with a white cross, heart-shaped balloon, candles and flowers was set up at a cul-de-sac where the tragedy happened. There were multiple shootings across the US on the Independence Day holiday weekend. In Indianapolis, at least two people were shot dead and five injured on Friday. Mass shootings with four or more people killed or injured broke out in Chicago, Philadelphia and Brockton, Massachusetts. Thousands raised for funeral of four-year-old boy killed by gravestone in Rawtenstall Cemetery

Hundreds of people have donated towards funeral costs for a four-year-old boy killed in a 'freak accident' when a gravestone fell on him in a cemetery. The youngster, who ITV News is choosing not to name to respect his family's wishes, was at Rawtenstall Cemetery in Lancashire on Saturday, 5 July, when he was injured. Emergency services were called but the boy could not be saved, Lancashire Police said. More than 400 people have donated to a fundraiser on Go Fund Me, set up by relative, Donna Miller, to help pay for the child's funeral. Ms Miller said his parents were "devastated" to have lost their son in a 'freak accident", adding: "All donations no matter how small will help this young family massively and help them deal with this unexpected tragedy.' In a statement, Lancashire Police said: 'As many of you are already aware there was a tragic incident in Rawtenstall yesterday and we just wanted to give you the latest. 'We were called to Rawtenstall Cemetery at 1pm yesterday (July 5) following reports a gravestone had fallen onto a child. 'Tragically, and despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the boy sadly died. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this devastating time. "His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be passed onto HM Coroner in due course.' The police also added that the boy's family have requested privacy and that he has not been named publicly to respect this wish. Rossendale Borough Council, responsible for the cemetery in Rawtenstall, said in a statement: 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of a young child at Rawtenstall Cemetery today. 'Our thoughts are with the family at this devastating time. Rossendale Borough Council is working with all relevant agencies to understand the circumstances of this incident.'
