PETALING JAYA : Following the US's latest attacks on Iran, Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar has called for the Dewan Rakyat to convene a special sitting to discuss the escalating conflicts in the Middle East.
Mahfuz said the development in the Iran-Israel war was becoming worrying and ran the risk of jeopardising global and Southeast Asia's regional stability.
'I call on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to immediately consider the need for this special sitting in the interest of justice, humanity, and sovereignty,' he said in a statement today.
The former Pokok Sena MP said the Dewan Rakyat should discuss Malaysia's official stance on the conflict and appropriate diplomatic action to be taken; the conflict's geopolitical and economic impact on the country's supply chain, oil prices, and security; and humanitarian action Malaysia can take to assist Iranian victims of war.
'As the highest democratic institution in the country, Parliament cannot remain silent on matters concerning global justice, the sovereignty of other nations, and humanitarian principles,' he said.
'The voice of the Malaysian people must be expressed through legitimate and dignified channels, namely, the Dewan Rakyat.'
Mahfuz said Malaysia must also continue to reject all forms of colonialism, aggression, and violations of international laws through organisations such as the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Non-Aligned Movement, and Asean.
Earlier today, President Donald Trump said the US military had carried out a 'very successful attack' on three Iranian nuclear sites, including the underground uranium enrichment facility at Fordo.
Trump's announcement came just two days after he said he would decide 'within two weeks' whether to join key ally Israel in attacking Iran.

Anwar Champions Kota MADANI As Model For Modern, Values-Based Living

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described the Kota MADANI project as more than a housing initiative for civil servants, framing it as a holistic urban development rooted in the principles of Malaysia MADANI. Speaking during his monthly address to staff at the Prime Minister's Department, Anwar stressed that the RM4 billion project is not just about providing homes, but about creating a well-planned, liveable city that integrates essential infrastructure such as schools, mosques, playgrounds and gyms. 'This is not an ordinary housing project. We are offering an extraordinary comfort level. Everything is taken into consideration – from schools to mosques to recreational facilities – all in one modern city built on MADANI values,' he said. Launched on 26 June, the Kota MADANI development in Precinct 19, Putrajaya is being driven as a people- and eco-friendly smart city. The first phase is scheduled to begin construction in September and is expected to complete by end-2027. Spanning 10,000 high-density residential units to accommodate more than 30,000 people, the development will also feature a secondary school and various public amenities. It is being undertaken by Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd (PjH) under a public-private partnership model – build, lease, maintain and transfer (BLMT) – without initial government expenditure. Anwar defended the project against politically motivated criticism, urging the public and civil service to view it as a long-term initiative designed with fiscal prudence and managerial capability through Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPj). He also commended PPj for repairing nearly 98% of damaged civil servant quarters, while acknowledging that demand for housing remains high. Related

PM to push trade ties at BRICS Summit in Brazil

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will have a packed programme in Brazil with the highlight being his participation in the 17th BRICS Summit. Malaysia's acting head of mission in Brazil Datuk Mohammad Ali Selamat said the Prime Minister will arrive in the Brazilian capital of Rio de Janeiro today at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He said Anwar will participate in the Presidential Panel session during the BRICS Business Forum. 'The event will be attended by Brazil's president and is expected to include leaders of BRICS member countries,' he said in a virtual interview with selected Malaysian media from the Brazilian capital. The BRICS Business Forum will bring together over 1,000 business leaders, government officials, international organisations and experts from the countries concerned along with other invited nations, to foster economic and international trade cooperation, besides sustainable development. Held annually on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, the forum aims to offer private sector perspectives to BRICS leaders on tackling shared challenges and advancing common business priorities. Mohamad Ali said the Prime Minister, who is making his second visit to Brazil, is also scheduled to hold meetings with corporate leaders from Brazil and Malaysia on business and investment opportunities. He will then attend the 17th BRICS Leaders Summit at the Museum of Modern Art, and deliver Malaysia's national statement during the session on Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence. Anwar, who earlier concluded official visits to Italy and France, is also scheduled to attend a dinner reception for heads of state and government hosted by President Lula. On Monday, Anwar will deliver Malaysia's national statement during the session on Environment, The 30th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (U CCC-COP30), and Global Health. 'The PM is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with heads of BRICS member and partner countries on the sidelines of the summit,' Mohammad Ali said. 'The participation of the Prime Minister provides an opportunity to highlight Malaysia's policies and continued commitment to inclusive and sustainable development, as well as our Asean Chairmanship priorities for 2025,' he added.

BRICS 2025: Anwar calls for fairer global order, says Global South now a key player

RIO DE JANEIRO: Developing nations should no longer be considered as marginal players in the global system as the Global South has risen to possess its own strength in technology, trade, leadership and world morals, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said today, BRICS has moved beyond political rhetoric and is in fact a coalition of political power, economy and civil society that moves together in demanding a global system that is more fair and just. 'BRICS uniqueness lies in the active participation of the private sector, women, youth and society, making the struggle not just an elite cause but a movement that is collective, inclusive and resilient,' he said at the BRICS Business Forum on Saturday (July 5). The Prime Minister said that as Asean Chair, Malaysia shares this aspiration. 'We in South East Asia fight for multilateralism, strengthen intra-Asean trade and pioneer the use of local currency in cross-border transactions. 'This is a concrete move towards a financial system that is more stable and free of unilateral domination,' he said. Anwar said BRICS and Asean members must also strengthen strategic cooperation, including boosting trade and investment with developing nations. 'I also call for major reforms towards global institutions such as the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Bank and World Trade Organisation to reflect current realities and the needs of developing countries, and not be trapped in an obsolete post World War II structure,' he said. The BRICS 2025 Summit, said the Prime Minister, should not be merely a continuity of past efforts, but rather, be the point of new beginning. 'With political leadership that is visionary, public sector that is progressive and unity among the Global South, we have a real opportunity to re-shape the global landscape,' he said.
