Harry Hill: ‘I was absolutely merciless' in pursuit of comedy career
Hill explained that his stepfather's passing made him determined to avoid a similar fate of working his entire life without enjoying retirement.
He attributed his relentless drive in comedy to his demanding medical career, where he often worked 80-100 hours a week.
He said 'I was absolutely merciless' in trying to get bookings: 'It's not the funniest people that get on, it's the pushiest. And I was pushy.'
Hill won the Perrier Award for best newcomer at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1992 and later went on to create and present Harry Hill's TV Burp on ITV.

BBC Homes Under the Hammer buyer makes £553k profit despite expert's concerns
BBC Homes Under the Hammer buyer makes £553k profit despite expert's concerns Homes Under the Hammer took a rather different course as an eye surgeon made a hefty profit despite a number of major home setbacks Jacqui Joseph, the presenter of Homes Under The Hammer, was visibly thrilled as she strolled through the streets of Shepherds Bush, London, to inspect a three-bedroom property. In the repeat episode aired on BBC One on Tuesday, August 5, Jacqui, who has a wealth of experience in property, shared with viewers her belief that the period-style house represented a "bargain" for any would-be purchaser, with the auction starting at £450,000. The host remarked: "That guide price seems pretty good especially for this part of London," yet expressed concern upon discovering issues inside the home. Her initial "worry" was the absence of double-glazing on any windows, noting to viewers: "Not good and not good for your EPC rating." Her concerns grew as she continued her tour, shocked to find that several ceilings were completely missing. Jacqui was struggling to find any qualities the home had to offer (Image: BBC) Channel 5 22 Kids and Counting star emotional as family face major change READ MORE: Jacqui exclaimed in astonishment: "What?" and then observed: "There's no ceiling there at all." She then turned her attention to the damp walls, where the plaster had separated from the brickwork, saying: "You can see the walls bubbling there. I've got a feeling it could be due to the guttering," reports MyLondon. The visit didn't improve, with Jacqui concluding to the cameras: "The more I see, the worse it gets." Viewers were then introduced to eye surgeon Tamina, who purchased the property at auction for a sum of £697,000. Tamina admitted to Jacqui that she hadn't undertaken a property renovation in thirty years and was eager to dive into the project with her friend Humar by her side. The Shepherds Bush home needed a complete refurb (Image: BBC) The duo were well aware they had a mammoth task ahead, as the entire property required a comprehensive refurbishment. The issue of damp also needed addressing, and Tamina had plans for a loft and side extension - both of which would come with a hefty price tag. Tamina set aside a modest budget of £150,000 for the renovations and anticipated the work would take between six to nine months. However, when the programme returned to check on Tamina's progress, the situation was quite different. Tamina and her friend Humar were hoping to transform the home (Image: BBC) After having to replace her team of builders four times, the project faced not only delays but significant cost overruns. Tamina revealed that she had exceeded her budget by an additional £100,000, bringing her total investment to £947,000. Although there had been stress, pressure and time constraints, Tamina found herself in a fortunate position as property values in the area had significantly increased since her initial investment. After completing the extensive renovations, an estate agent evaluated her new home and informed her that if she decided to sell, she could potentially make a staggering profit of £553,000 - music to her ears. Article continues below Despite the lucrative proposal, she opted to retain the Shepherds Bush townhouse in her property collection and lease it out. An estate agent estimated rental earnings of £4,000 to £4,500 monthly, yet Tamina had the final chuckle when she revealed receiving a superior bid. She affirmed: "I've managed to rent it out for £5,500 per month and I managed to rent it out before it even went to market." Homes Under the Hammer airs weekdays on BBC One, from 11:15am.

ITV Coronation Street's Theo exit 'sealed' as fans predict dark twist for Todd
Coronation Street viewers are convinced that they've worked out how Theo Silverton will leave the cobbles Coronation Street fans reckon they've figured out Theo Silverton's departure, as they anticipate a sinister twist involving Todd Grimshaw. Todd (played by Gareth Pierce) first encountered scaffolder Theo (portrayed by James Cartwright) in March. The two quickly became friends, and it was disclosed that Theo was set to tie the knot with a woman named Danielle, with the pair sharing two children. Theo found himself shunned by his family when Danielle discovered his relationship with Todd. Theo later confessed to Todd that he had spent most of his life hiding his sexuality, after his deeply religious parents forced him into conversion therapy during his youth. Viewers of the ITV soap have been worried for Todd recently as Theo has repeatedly shown aggression. He notably threatened James Bailey after he drunkenly attempted to kiss Todd at number eleven, and even struck his own son, Miles, during a tense family brunch last week. Theo's violent behaviour ultimately led Danielle to prevent her ex-husband from seeing their children, reports Leicestershire Live. During Monday night's episode (August 4) an enthusiastic Todd informed Theo that the corner shop flat was available for rent, with George Shuttleworth later confessing that he will miss Todd when he leaves. In an attempt to lift George's spirits, Todd proposed that they accompany Dev Alahan on his stag do at the Rovers, which left Theo feeling annoyed. At the stag do, Theo became bothered when Todd took a turn on the stripper pole, swiftly pretending to have a headache and insisting they head home. Once back at number eleven, Theo admitted to fabricating the headache, confessing to Todd: "I wanted you all to myself." Following Monday's episode, numerous Coronation Street viewers expressed their worries for Todd as Theo persists in distancing him from the rest of the street. Elsewhere, some fans are speculating about Theo's potential departure from Weatherfield. One viewer commented on a Facebook fan page: "Theo is definitely separating Todd from his loved ones. This isn't going to end well once they move into the flat". Another chimed in: "I think Todd will be in an abusive relationship. It's already starting. Theo could then get arrested and go to prison," while yet another cautioned: "Todd needs to watch out. Theo is bad news." Meanwhile on the soap, fans think they know what really happened to Logan Radcliffe and who had him 'attacked' amid speculation he's been killed off after his exit aired. It comes as actor Harry Lowbridge announced his departure, having wrapped filming his final scenes. This led viewers to speculate that Logan had met a grim fate in the cell, possibly orchestrated by someone wanting to silence him after his mention of a mysterious figure named Tia Wardley. One fan took to social media to declare: "Lisa definitely had Logan killed in prison." Another viewer speculated: "So that mutual friend? Costello? Kit? Tia? Or Becky herself?" A third chimed in: "Best guess at the moment is Costello or Floyd."
