Govt launches scheme to incentivise electric trucks by up to Rs 9.6 lakh under PM E-DRIVE

Union Minister for Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy on Friday announced the launch of the first-ever scheme to incentivise electric trucks under the PM E-DRIVE initiative . The minister said that diesel trucks make up only 3 per cent of the total vehicles but cause 42 per cent of transport emissions. The scheme has a financial outlay of Rs 10,900 crore over a period of two years. The newly launched scheme is a strategic move to support India's commitment to reducing vehicular emissions and achieving its net-zero 2070 goals, the Ministry of Heavy Industries said in a statement. Demand incentives will be extended to N2 and N3 category electric trucks, as defined under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR). The N2 category includes trucks with gross vehicles, incentives will be applicable only to the puller trackers of the N3 category. To ensure reliability of electric trucks, the manufacturers will provide a comprehensive manufacturer-backed warranty. This will include a five-year or 5 lakh kilometre warranty, while the warranty for vehicles and motors shall be five years or 2.5 lakh kilometres, whichever is earlier. Live Events To promote affordability, the incentive will depend on the gross vehicle weight of the electric truck and the highest level of incentive that can be availed is Rs 9.6 lakhs. These incentives will be provided as an upfront reduction in the purchase price and reimbursed to OEMs through the PM E-DRIVE portal on a first-come, first-served basis. The scheme is aimed at deploying 5,600 e-trucks, with incentives up to Rs 9.6 lakh per vehicle. The minister said the scheme is "a bold step towards clean, sustainable, and cost-efficient freight mobility," adding that old trucks must be scrapped to avail benefits, driving both emission reduction and fleet renewal. Further, he said sectors like cement, steel, logistics, and ports will directly benefit from the scheme. The minister also said that SAIL will buy 150 e-trucks in the next two years and mandate 15 per cent EVs among all hired vehicles across its units. The scheme earmarks support for 1,100 e-trucks in Delhi, with a Rs 100 crore outlay to improve air quality in the national capital. "Alongside the progress in e-two wheelers and e-three wheelers and the tender for 10,900 e-buses (India's largest), this marks another milestone in our Viksit Bharat 2047 journey," the Kumaraswamy said.
