Commanders coach on Terry McLaurin trade request: Business as usual
McLaurin asked for a change of scenery on Thursday given his frustration with the lack of progress in negotiations toward a contract extension. Quinn said McLaurin told him of his plea for a trade before the news became public.
"We love Terry. I'm really glad he's here," Quinn said. "Hopefully he's out practicing soon. We also understand there's the business side of this things that (general manager) Adam (Peters) and his side and Terry and his reps are working it through. I just kind of stay in that space. We recognize both are happening.
"But like I said, I'm really glad he's here. I love coaching him. But the business side, that's kind of where it's at. It's not -- somebody asked me if it's a distraction -- it is not. Players today, they're more aware of contracts and things maybe than they used to be. They recognize that business part happens, as well, so for the team, we're just rocking and going and throwing some great practices.
"For Terry and the trade request, that's part of normal business that is happening around the NFL. It's normal, we understand it, and we just throw our very best practices out on the field."
McLaurin, who turns 30 in September, became a hold-in and was placed on the team's physically unable to perform list with an apparent ankle injury suffered last season. He did not attend organized team activities and mandatory minicamp. He did, however, participate in spring workouts.
With a base salary of $15.5 million and cap hit of $25.5 million in the final season of a three-year, $68.3 million contract, the speedster is coming off a career year with 1,096 receiving yards, 13 touchdowns and 82 receptions on 117 targets. He added three scores and 227 yards on 14 receptions in three playoff games.
McLaurin and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels helped lead Washington to a 12-5 regular-season mark and its best season since it won the Super Bowl in 1991. The Commanders knocked off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC wild-card round and Detroit Lions in the divisional round before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.
Over six seasons with Washington, the two-time Pro Bowl selection (2022, 2024) has 6,379 receiving yards, 38 touchdowns and 460 catches in 97 games.
A team captain, McLaurin has hit the 1,000-yard mark for a franchise-record five straight seasons despite instability at the quarterback position before Daniels' NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign.

Over 3,000 Boeing defense workers are on strike: What to know
Roughly 3,000 Boeing (BA) defense workers are on strike after the union rejected the company's contract. Yahoo Finance Senior Transportation Reporter Pras Subramanian breaks down the latest. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Market Catalysts. Boeing, um, some of its employees poised for a strike, the second latest strike that we've seen in less than a year. Yeah. Um, what do we, who does this affect, what do we know about it? How likely is it to actually happen? So, you're right, the defense unit is their workers are striking about 3,200 workers or so, uh, as compared to the, you know, 50,000 or so that they're working in the commercial unit, right? So, uh, they make the F-15 fighter jet, they're supposed to make the new upcoming next generation fighter, which is a big deal that Boeing won a contract for. Um, the defense business is profitable, um, which is more than you can say about the commercial business unit right now, but it's much smaller in terms of revenue. Boeing made about 22.6 billion last quarter, uh, but 6.6 of that was with the defense business. So it's a, you know, it's a nice chunk, but it's not the lion's share there. Uh, CEO Kelly Ortberg said during their earnings call that he said did not to worry about this strike, it was coming, they perhaps expected it, and he said it wouldn't have a significant impact on their business, uh, and that they probably see a resolution coming in the next month or so, but we'll see, you never know these things can extend. The last, apparently, the last strike for Boeing's defense workers was, I think, around 90 days, uh, um, maybe like 30 years ago. So, uh, it's a little rare. Right. but And the shares are not that much changed today, so it sounds like investors are, you know, they are reassured by what Ortberg has said. All right, thanks, Pras. Appreciate it. Yeah. Sean McVay shares advice for Liam Coen as first-time head coach for Jaguars
McVay says Coen is "way ahead of the curve" compared to where he was at in 2017 Sean McVay and Liam Coen have a long coaching history together. Coen has had multiple coaching stints with the Rams, including one as the assistant wide receivers coach from 2018-2019, assistant quarterbacks coach in 2020, and then a return as the offensive coordinator in 2022 after a departure for Kentucky in the 2021 season. Coen finds himself in a new light, being hired as the head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars during the offseason. McVay and Coen have remained close since their time together on the Rams. McVay has been a shoulder that Coen can lean on for advice, especially given the success McVay's had with two Super Bowl appearances in just eight years with the team. 'Oh yeah, Liam and I talk a lot, and I think it's about leaning on the people around you and not feeling like you have all the answers," McVay said when asked about Coen on Saturday. "This is something McVay has been very vocal about his whole career, considering he was hired to right the ship in 2017 at just 30 years old, making him the youngest head coach of all time. Coen, a Warwick, RI, native, finds himself in a similar spot as McVay, being only 39 years old and a first-time head coach himself at the NFL level. McVay has more to say on Coen, reassuring the importance of having the right people around you. 'Make sure that you do a great job of being able to delegate to the great people that you've surrounded yourself with," McVay said of his advice for Coen. "Liam knows way more than I knew when I first got the job, so he's way ahead of the curve like all of these other guys that are getting their opportunities to go do their thing. So, they won't make the same mistakes I did.' That's some very high praise from someone who has had as much immediate success as McVay did in L.A. Coen will look to right the ship in Jacksonville after a 4-13 season that was filled with injuries and lacked star power throughout the roster in 2024. Being a first-year head coach is filled with new experiences, ups and downs, and adversity throughout the whole process, something Coen will have to navigate in his first year at the helm.
