CF Montreal transfer M Nathan Saliba to Anderlecht
CF Montreal transferred homegrown midfielder Nathan Saliba to Belgium's RSC Anderlecht on Thursday. Saliba, 21, had one goal and one assist in 16 MLS matches (15 starts) this season, his third with Montreal. His deal with the Belgian Pro League powerhouse came with a reported $3 million transfer fee. "We are very proud of Nathan's progression over the last few years," said Montreal managing director Luca Saputo. "Despite his young age, he has established himself as a starter and leader on the team, which has also allowed him to earn a spot with the national team. He began his career with us at the academy and is now fulfilling his dream of playing in Europe. On behalf of the club, I would like to thank Nathan for his contribution over the years." Saliba recorded two goals and two assists in 68 career appearances (53 starts) with Montreal. He will see a familiar face at Anderlecht with sporting director Olivier Renard, who worked in the Montreal front office from 2019-24. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Boston Legacy FC named Filipa Patao as the NWSL expansion club's first head coach. Patao, 36, coached Benfica in her native Portugal from 2020-25, compiling a 156-28-15 record in all competitions. She led Benfica to five consecutive league titles and was nominated for Ballon d'or Coach of the Year in 2024. Patao will join Boston in July once her visa is approved to begin preparations for the club's 2026 debut. "I'm very excited about going to Boston. I can't wait to get to the city, meet all the people, and start working," Patao said in a team release on Wednesday. "The American league is extremely competitive -- and that's one of the reasons I accepted this project. I like competition, difficulty, and getting the players to strive for more and better." --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Jake Knapp sets course record with 61 at Rocket Classic in Detroit
June 27 - Jake Knapp's latest record day resulted in a course record at the Rocket Classic on Friday. Knapp went 7-under par over an eight hole stretch to propel him to a course record 11-under 61 at the Detroit Golf Club on Friday. Knapp, who began the day tied for 120th at the Rocket Classic, poured in an eagle and nine birdies on a bogey-free card that vaulted him from the cutline into contention. Knapp, 31, has established a reputation for being an extremely streaky player. In February, he recorded the 15th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history in the first round of the Cognizant Classic. He eventually tied for sixth after stumbling to a final round 72. Knapp fired an opening-round 63 in his most recent start at the RBC Canadian Open. He again posted a final round 72 to settle for a T27. Ranked 98th in the world, Knapp has one career victory on tour. That came at the 2024 Mexico Open, where he also posted a 63 in the first round and held on for a two-shot victory with a 71 on Sunday. "I'm definitely not afraid of shooting a low number," Knapp said. "I feel like when I start making birdies, I want to make more. I was even kind of thinking about 59 when I stuck it close on my third to last for eagle and figured I could maybe eagle that and birdie the last two. "I think when you're playing well just try to stay out of my own way and just kind of keep doing what I'm doing and making more birdies." Friday's course record came just a day after Knapp struggled to an even par 72 on a course that yielded a pair of 10-under 62s on the day. During the opening round, he managed just a lone birdie against one bogey. That changed quickly on Friday as Knapp took advantage of a hot putter. Following three consecutive pars to open his round on the back nine, Knapp poured in three birdies over a four-hole stretch. He reached the par-5 17th hole in two and then drained a 34-foot eagle putt. After making his turn in 5-under 31, Knapp birdied six of his first eight holes on his inward nine to reach 11 under for the round and complete an 11-shot improvement from Thursday. "I was just kind of bummed last night because I felt like in the practice rounds and everything felt like I was hitting it pretty nice, and I know this course sets up well for me," he said. "So to shoot even par the first day just feels like you're shooting yourself in the foot, but feels nice to bounce back with 61. "I just tried to play a little bit more aggressive, and for the most part we just went in with the mindset today that every pin was a green light so just tried to hit it at everything." --Field Level Media

Report: Pac-12 expected to formally invite Texas State as member
June 25 - The Pac-12 is continuing to rebuild its membership with its newest member expected to be Texas State, according to ESPN. Per ESPN, Texas State officials have informed the Sun Belt Conference that the university is expecting an offer from the Pac-12 "in the near future." While a formal offer has yet to be extended, Texas State could join the conference for the 2026-27 school year. According to Texas open meeting laws, Texas State would need to put in a 72-hour notice to convene the board of regents, meaning that a formal conclusion to the process may not occur until Monday at the earliest. While Texas State has long been considered a favorite to join the Pac-12, anticipation has ramped up this week as the university's exit fee to join the conference would double from $5 million to $10 million on July 1. To avoid paying that lofty fee, Texas State's invitation would need to come this week in time for formal board approval. If it goes through, Texas State would become the new Pac-12's eighth football school, which is the minimum for the league to be recognized as an official FBS conference. (Gonzaga will also join the Pac-12 but does not sponsor football.) As it stands, the Pac-12 consists of holdover members Oregon State and Washington State as well as Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State. --Field Level Media

Report: College hoops expanding to 32-game season
June 25 - The NCAA is expected to approve an expansion of the college basketball season from 31 to 32 games, CBS Sports reported Wednesday. The schedule change would go into effect with the 2026-27 season for men and women after the Division I Council passes the measure, per the report. There has been a 31-game maximum since 2006-07. Teams are permitted to schedule 28 or 29 predetermined games, plus an allowance for multi-team events -- such as holiday tournaments -- where two or three additional games could be played. According to the report, programs will not be required to play 32 games but will merely have the option to do so. --Field Level Media
