Cards complete 3-game sweep of Guardians with 7-0 victory
CLEVELAND (AP) — Nolan Gorman belted a three-run homer, Victor Scott II had a two-run shot and Matthew Liberatore won his career-high third straight start and the St. Louis Cardinals rolled to a 7-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday.
Gorman went deep in the first inning off Logan Allen (5-6), while Scott homered off Hunter Gaddis in the seventh to extend the Cardinals' lead to 5-0. Pedro Pages and Garrett Hampson added RBIs in the eighth.
St. Louis has won six straight on the road, its longest run under fourth-year manager Oliver Marmol. The Cardinals completed their initial series sweep of Cleveland by a 21-6 margin in the three-game set.
Liberatore (6-6) tossed six innings, striking out five while allowing three hits and five walks. JoJo Romero, Riley O'Brien and John King wrapped up the combined three-hitter that included eight bases on balls.
Allen gave up three runs in six innings for Cleveland, which went 1-5 on its homestand and fell two games below .500 for the first time since April 8.
Guardians shortstop Gabriel Arias was taken off the field on a cart after sustaining a left ankle sprain in the third, but X-rays of his lower leg were negative. He caught his left spikes on the grass while going into the hole to field a grounder by Masyn Winn. Key moment

Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado singled in the third for his 1,900th hit and had his 400th double in the sixth. He was removed for 'cautionary reasons' in the eighth, according to the team. Up next

Josh Hines-Allen on current state of Jacksonville Jaguars' defense: 'I'm excited'
Josh Hines-Allen recently weighed in on the direction of the Jacksonville Jaguars' defense heading into the 2025 season. Jacksonville Jaguars' defensive end Josh Hines-Allen is very excited about the current state of the defense heading into training camp and the 2025 NFL season. This was a Jaguars' defense in 2024 that ranked near the bottom in a number of key metrics. As a unit, Jacksonville ranked 32nd in ESPN's pass rush win rate metric, they were 30th in pressure rate, and 27th in run stop rate. In the secondary, the Jaguars were 24th in completion rate allowed, 30th in interceptions, 30th in yards per pass attempt, and 31st in passer rating. To remedy this, we've seen GM James Gladstone make a number of additions to this unit. This includes signing Eric Murray and Jourdan Lewis in free agency, along with drafting Travis Hunter. Gladstone also made several additions at defensive end, along with Arik Armstead moving back to defensive tackle, where he was highly productive with San Francisco. These changes made over the offseason are one reason why Hines-Allen is bullish about the Jaguars' defense this season. "I'm excited about our defense," Hines-Allen said recently on the 'Rich Eisen Show.' "I'm excited about our offense. Again, I think we got a good aggressive team and an experienced team now. Adding Jourdan Lewis, I think Jourdan Lewis is a heck of a player. Eric Murray is a heck of a player, so our secondary already got so much better. "And then we added guys up front. Veteran guys, Emmanuel Ogbah, getting Dawuane Smoot back, me and Tre is already in there, and then you have Arik moving back to 3-tech. And then our linebacker core has been the same for the last couple years so they have the unity on that unit. Defensively, we got a good solid group." Also contributing to Hines-Allen's confidence is new defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile. Under Campanile, like on the offensive side of the ball with Liam Coen, multiplicity will be a core element of this Jaguars' defense. This means throwing a lot of different looks at opponents and being malleable, able to adjust the scheme based on what the opposing offense wants to do, and also molding the defense to fit the skill sets Campanile has to work with on the roster. "I love Coach Camp," added Hines-Allen. "He's somebody that you want to play for." ... "This dude is intense but he shows the passion and love that he has for the game and for us. It makes us want to play for him. It makes us want to understand the defense a little bit faster for him. So that's always a good trait to have in a coach. "So that's what I'm saying, I think we're in a good position. I'm ready to maximize the value I can bring to this defense and just be the best defensive player I can be."
