Bihar court awards death sentence to two accused in Madhubani gangrape case
Syed Mohammad Fazlul Bari, judicial magistrate, POCSO court, Madhubani ,delivered the verdict after hearing the case from both the prosecution and the defence. The court also slapped a fine of Rs.1.20 lakh each on the accused.
The court, in its order, said that the amount realised from the two convicts as fine would be given to the victim's family. In addition, the court directed the government to pay Rs.8 lakh as compensation to the rape victim's family as compensation.
The brutal rape and murder case occurred in a village in Madhubani district in 2023.
The court observed that the incident comes under 'rarest of the rare' category and severe punishment awarded to accused will work as a deterrent to incidents of crime against women. The court further said that the capital punishment awarded to the convict is a significant step towards delivering justice to the victim's family.
According to the prosecution, the horrifying incident took place when the victim was playing outside her residence in June 2023. They took the girl to a make-shift house in Kosi Colony at Jay Nagar, raped her and later killed her by gaging with a towel. The body was dumped in the make-shift room made of asbestos.
On the next day, police arrested Om Prakash Jha and recovered the body of the victim. They also recovered blood-stained clothes of the accused from the spot and sent to the forensic science laboratory for test. The accused were held guilty under sections 366 (A), 376(D), 302/34, 4/5 POCSO Act and 3/5 SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Altogether 18 witnesses were examined by the court.

Body of man who fell into open drain after stepping on broken slab found
Lucknow: The body of 43-year-old man, Suresh Lodhi, who fell into an overflowing drain after stepping on broken slab on Saturday morning, was recovered after 28 hours on Sunday near the IIM Road embankment, about 1 km from the accident site in Thakurganj's Radha Gram locality. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced Rs 5 lakh compensation from the CM fund and directed action against negligent officials. An additional Rs 4 lakh was provided from the disaster management fund, taking the total aid to Rs 9 lakh. Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar also initiated action against the errant officials. According to family members, Suresh was swept away by the strong current of the drain which was overflowing after heavy rain, around 7am on Saturday. The family alleged that despite complaints, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) started the rescue operation after three hours. Later, teams from SDRF and Suez India launched a rescue mission with over 100 personnel, but it was a local resident, Buddha, who eventually found the body, residents claimed. On the directives of the CM, municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar suspended junior engineer Raman Kumar for failing to inspect the area despite complaints received through IGRS and the control room. Assistant engineer Alok Kumar was also issued a show-cause notice. Cleaning contractor Ankit Kumar has been blacklisted and penalised. An FIR was also lodged against the vendor and the local BJP corporator. The commissioner said the work of drain cleaning in the area was of poor quality. Residents alleged that the drain slab was broken for months, and no one paid attention despite repeated complaints by residents and the victim's family. "No one helped us. We searched and found the body on our own. Who will look after my children now?" Suresh's wife, Renu, said. She demanded Rs 50 lakh as compensation which was supported by relatives and neighbours. Locals staged protest and shouted slogans against the municipal corporation and officials. Renu alleged that they had filed complaints twice about the broken drain slab, but no action was taken. "We had to get the drain outside our house repaired on our own," she said. As road rage cases take violent turn in Bengaluru, 17 make it to rowdy list
Bengaluru: From brawls triggered by splashing rainwater to fatal confrontations on the road, Bengaluru has seen a steady rise in cases of road rage over the past 3.5 years. Between 2022 and May 2025, police registered 88 such cases across the city, leading to the arrest of 123 people, including two women. Seventeen of those arrested have been listed as 'C-rowdy sheeters', a category meant for first-time offenders whose behaviour during the incident is seen as particularly aggressive or threatening. Some of these individuals, including professionals with no prior criminal record, followed their victims to their homes or offices after the altercation, attacked them again, or extorted money through death threats. In a few instances, attackers went as far as vandalising the victim's home after the initial roadside confrontation. "These 17 persons acted beyond reason. They threatened their opponents aggressively, which is why we categorised them as C-rowdies. We'll monitor them for a year. If there are no further incidents, the rowdy-sheet will be closed," a senior cop said. When asked why people risk legal trouble despite knowing the consequences, he said: "In that moment, the aggressor is in a reactive mode. Legal consequences do not register." Delivery agent assaulted at traffic signal A 35-year-old food delivery agent was assaulted by three men near Modi Hospital Junction on West of Chord Road around midnight Saturday. The incident occurred after the delivery agent, Pemaram, refused to give way at a red signal. Pemaram, a resident of Rajajinagar, had just completed a delivery and was heading towards Navarang Theatre. At the junction, while waiting for the green signal, three men on a scooter honked and asked him to move through a narrow gap between vehicles. When he refused, they confronted him. "The trio got down from the scooter, started abusing me and then assaulted me. They beat me for nearly eight minutes," Pemaram told police. A crowd eventually gathered, forcing the attackers to flee. The assault disrupted traffic briefly at the junction. Pemaram sought treatment at KC General Hospital before lodging a complaint with Basaveshwaranagar police. Andhra Pradesh government restores pensions for 1,575 landless families in Amaravati
Vijayawada: The state government has decided to restore welfare pensions to around 1,575 landless poor families in Amaravati, the capital city area. This decision follows a resolution passed by the CRDA (Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority) governing council, chaired recently by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu . Each family will receive a monthly pension of Rs 2,500 until further notice. "The government has authorised the Commissioner, APCRDA, to extend the benefit of the landless poor pension to 1,575 families as per the original household survey conducted in 2015. These families were initially granted the benefit but were later excluded based on income limits and six-step validation. The government has now decided to restore the pension as a special case, considering the unique circumstances under which these families lost their livelihoods due to the establishment of the Capital City and land acquisition by the APCRDA," said S Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, municipal administration and urban development (MA&UD). He explained that the CRDA, at its recent meeting, resolved to restore the Amaravati landless poor pension starting January 2025, based on the original 2015 household survey. Following this, the CRDA Commissioner requested that the benefit be extended to the 1,575 families who were previously included in the scheme. In 2015, soon after the announcement of the Land Pooling Scheme (LPS), the state government granted a welfare pension of Rs 2,500 to approximately 23,500 families in the capital city area. The scheme was designed to support landless poor families who lost employment due to the acquisition of agricultural land for capital city development. The Guntur District Collector determined the landless status based on a household survey, white ration card (BPL status), and residential proof in Amaravati. However, during the YSRCP government's tenure, 1,575 families were removed from the pension list following a six-step verification process, which classified them as above the poverty line. Now, the Naidu-led NDA government has decided to continue the pension, regardless of income status. Notably, the original government decision in 2015 stated that both the landless poor pension and the LPS annuity would be provided only for ten years, which would have ended in July 2025. However, due to the delay in completing the capital city construction, the government has opted to extend both schemes. The landless poor pension will cost the government Rs 70–80 crore, while the LPS annuity requires an annual outlay of about Rs 160 crore for around 18,000 farmers in Amaravati.
