Mick Jagger and Elton John top star-studded guest list for French state banquet

Both musicians have homes in France and Sir Elton also has a home in nearby Old Windsor.
Sir Elton famously sang Candle In The Wind, rewritten as Goodbye England's Rose, at the funeral of the King's first wife Diana, Princess of Wales, and he has a close bond with the Duke of Sussex – Charles's youngest son with whom the King has a troubled relationship.
Other notable invitees who turned out for the glittering banquet with Charles, the Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales were actress Dame Kristin Scott Thomas, former England goalkeeper Mary Earps, who now plays for Paris Saint-Germain, authors Joanne Harris and Sebastian Faulks, sculptor Sir Antony Gormley and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and his wife Lady Victoria Starmer.

The King was seated between Mr Macron and French culture minister Rachida Dati, while Kate – attending her first state banquet in nearly two years – was on the other side of the French president and also next to art historian Christophe Leribault, chairman of the Musee D'Orsay.
The Queen was on the other side of the table, between Mrs Macron and French armed forces minister Sebastien Lecornu.
On the other side of first lady Brigitte was heir to the throne William.

Sir Mick, whose formal white place card read 'Sir Michael Jagger', was seated between Dame Kristin and Alice Rufo, director general for international relations and strategy of the French ministry for the armed forces.
Sir Elton, who has severe vision issues after contracting an eye infection, was seated next to his husband, rather than apart which is usually the custom for couples at royal banquets.
On Sir Elton's other side was the Duchess of Gloucester, while Sir Keir was next to footballer Ms Earps.
Also making an appearance was First Dates' Fred Sirieix, as well as the French singer Mika, who was sat next to the Duchess of Edinburgh.

Estoril Congress Centre is set to become a cultural space – first initiative is an exhibition
It had already been announced, but now it's official: the Estoril Congress Centre is becoming the Estoril Centre for Culture and Congresses (CCCE). The aim is to broaden the venue's scope, turning it into a space also dedicated to the performing and visual arts – including dance, theatre, music, art and cinema. This turning point is marked with the opening of an exhibition, Première 30, which runs from July 10th to August 31st with free entry. The show brings together works by 17 emerging artists from Portugal and France, and is part of the Première programme, founded 30 years ago by the Centre d'Art Contemporain - Meymac in France, with the goal of promoting new visual artists on the international stage. The French art centre invites newly graduated artists from partner schools each year to take part in a group exhibition. For this 30th edition, young Portuguese artists were also invited, specifically from the Escola Superior de Artes e Design in Caldas da Rainha – Polytechnic of Leiria, and the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lisbon. Curated by Caroline Bissière, Jean-Paul Blanchet and Luísa Soares de Oliveira, Première 30 showcases works across a wide range of media – from painting to installation, video to sculpture – highlighting the diversity of expression among these emerging artists. With this transformation, the new CCCE becomes part of the Vila das Artes project, a cultural and artistic network in Estoril that also includes the Estoril Arts Academy (Cruzeiro Building), the Museum of Portuguese Music – Casa Verdades de Faria, the Mirita Casimiro Theatre and the Senhora da Boa Nova Auditorium.

Have your say on whether the Royal Family would be as popular without Kate
Princess Kate's charm and presence have become a cornerstone of the Royal Family's popularity. From recent dazzling appearances at events like the State Banquet and Trooping the Colour, her influence is clear — but would the monarchy shine as brightly without her? Would the Royal Family command the same level of public attention without Kate Middleton, we wonder. As the Princess of Wales continues her cancer recovery with remarkable candour, recent royal outings have underscored just how central her presence has become to the monarchy's modern image. From the dazzling tiara sported at the glitzy state banquet at Windsor Castle for the French state visit, to the beautiful teal number sported at Trooping the Colour - it's clear that the public's fascination with the Royal Family is deeply entwined with hers. Without Kate, many royal engagements seem to lack a certain spark. There was heaps of attention lavished on her stunning Givenchy gown at the State Banquet. How many other royals command that level of intrigue? But she's far from just a fashionista. A huge part of Kate's appeal is her refreshing candidness. While some royals can often seem rather stand-offish, the princess has a refreshing vulnerability and honesty that people really warm to. What do YOU think? Would the Royal Family be as popular without Kate? Take our poll below and share your thoughts in the comments section. If you can't see the poll, click here In a refreshingly open move for a member of the Royal Family, the Princess of Wales recently revealed the holistic practice she incorporated into her cancer treatment during a candid chat about her illness with staff at patients at Colchester Hospital. Visiting the centre's new Wellbeing Garden, Kate delved into her own personal experience with cancer for the first time, revealing much about her illness and recovery. Her elegance, relatability, and knack to balance tradition with modernity have earned her a unique status - one that's arguably irreplaceable in the current royal line-up. This raises an important question: would the Royal Family be as popular, or as closely followed, without her? While other senior royals continue their duties admirably, Kate connects with the public in a way few others have managed. Whether attending state events or championing causes like early childhood development, she brings a sense of authenticity and modern grace to The Firm. The Royal Family's long-term relevance hinges on its ability to evolve and stay connected with the people. In many ways, do you think Kate has become the face of that evolution? Emmanuel Macron's cheeky remark about Prince William uncovered by lip reader
When the French president arrived in the UK for his three-day state visit, he seemingly made a cheeky comment to King Charles about his eldest son, with a lip reading expert now decoding the message A lip reader has revealed the cheeky comment French president Emmanuel Macron seemingly made to King Charles about Prince William when he arrived in the UK. The French leader and his wife Brigitte arrived at the RAF in Northolt on Tuesday where they were greeted by Prince William and Princess Kate, before heading to Windsor for an official welcome ceremony. While on the dais with King Charles and Queen Camilla outside Windsor Castle, Charles and Macron exchanged pleasantries and, according to lip reader Nicola Hickling, spoke about other members of the royal family. During their candid chat, President Macron is said to have made a cheeky comment about Prince William, earning him a laugh from the heir to the throne. According to the lip reader, Macron commented on how tall Prince William is, while comparing him to his much shorter father, The Sun reports. While gesturing to Prince William, Macron apparently said to King Charles: "He is incredibly tall." Charles then replied: "He is very tall. He's six foot one, he is, ever so." William then seemingly joined the conversation to correct his father, saying: "Actually, I'm six foot three." Macron then is said to have replied cheekily to the King: "Unlike us, we're short!" King Charles measures in at 5ft 10, while Macron is even shorter than the monarch, at 5ft 7. The official welcome for the French leader certainly caught the attention of royal fans, with many left perplexed during the ceremony as Prince William and Princess Kate stood awkwardly at the side of the dais, despite their roles as senior working royals. The strange staging caught the attention of many online, as one person pointed out the staging on X, writing: "Am I the only one who objects to this staging? Who thought it was a good idea to place OUR Prince and Princess of Wales off stage like this? The optics are terrible." While several others shared the same sentiment, one royal fan speculated the strict royal protocol that had come into play for the scene, explaining that while the staging may seem unusual, it was actually perfectly normal given William and Kate's roles as supporting members of the monarchy. After the official welcome, the French president then joined King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Princess Kate inside Windsor Castle for a tour through the royal exhibition, before the opulent state banquet was held on Tuesday night. More than 160 guests were in attendance at the Castle for the event, with Kate making a surprise appearance in a stunning red floor-length gown. Other royals including Duchess Sophie and Princess Anne were also in attendance, while A-list names such as Elton John and Mick Jagger also snagged an invite. The royals involvement in the three-day French state visit came to an end on Wednesday when King Charles and Queen Camilla took a tour through the Windsor Castle gardens with the French leader, before bidding the Macrons farewell as they journeyed to London. French President Emmanuel Macron is the first European leader to attend a state visit to the UK since Charles was crowned, and since the UK left the EU. During the final day of the state visit today, Macron will head to 10 Downing Street for a UK-France Summit.
