KUCHING (July 27): The announcement of 'interesting offerings' for Malaysians by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is regarded as 'a welcoming break from being paraded with many less-desirable national narratives'.
In pointing this out, socio-political activist Datuk Prof Dr Jayum Jawan highlighted Anwar's statement about the nation's gross domestic product (GDP) having recorded a growth of about 4.4 per cent in the first quarter of this year.
'That is a remarkable performance in view of the fact that the world economy is competitive, and that the new US tariff is yet to have it full impact upon Malaysia,' said the fellow of Academy of Sciences Malaysia and adjunct professor of Institute of Borneo Studies at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), in a statement.
The academician also said the health of the economy affected everyone, 'from the super-rich to the downright poor'.
However, he said help and assistance were usually targeted.
Moreover, those who were aware of them would have access, but those who did not know about them, more often would be left out, he added.
'How many Dayak communities in the interior and far-flung corners of Sarawak are aware of how the RM100,000 Sejati Madani grant would benefit them?
'Without knowledge of what, where and how to apply for this, they would be left out.
'In this respect, the role of their elected representatives becomes important,' he said.
'How many Dayak longhouses have been adopted under the 'Kampung Angkat Madani'?'
'How many rural schools in Sarawak and in the interior have been adopted as 'Sekolah Angkat Madani'?'
'The rural and interior inhabitants might not benefit from the Rahmah Basic Contribution (Sara) aid of RM100 because to travel to shops in town that dispense these goods, might cost them more than the amount itself,' he said.
Jayum also noted that the toll fares were maintained.
'Sabah and Sarawak do not have tolls, so this toll-fee freeze does not benefit the people of these two regions.
'The mentality of the government and their leaders remain through different periods and during different leaderships,' he said.
'Cash incentives, rebates, and price freezes on certain concessions are popular approaches to gain support, but these actions are not sustainable in the long run,' he pointed out.
'How much, and for how long, can the government provide these handouts?'
Jayum said that the more sustainable actions and those that would endear PM Anwar and his ruling party to the people would be for them to keep their election promises.
'There is a high expectation that the Madani Government under Anwar would be more inclusive because he rose to the position of Prime Minister through non-partisan support,' he added. anwar ibrahim jayum jawan lead Sara aid

Political unrest threatens Malaysia's tourism & economy

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Tourism Agency Association (MATA) has expressed concern that ongoing political instability and large-scale public demonstrations could harm Malaysia's international image, investor confidence, and tourism growth. Its president Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Harun said such unrest threatens efforts to promote Visit Malaysia Year 2026, a national initiative aimed at attracting millions of international tourists. 'Malaysia is now in a strong phase of post-pandemic economic recovery. Any actions that disrupt political stability and national security may hinder the growth of both the tourism and economic sectors,' he said in a statement. Mohd Khalid said prolonged street protests can affect business operations, job opportunities and investor confidence, ultimately increasing the cost of living for Malaysians. He stressed that public safety must remain a priority as large gatherings carry risks of provocation, conflict and chaos that could threaten public order. 'Stability and peace are the foundation of tourism growth. Without guaranteed safety, tourists will simply choose other destinations that are more stable and secure.' He added that a negative global media coverage could also severely impact the country's Islamic and nature-based tourism sectors. 'Tourism is a major contributor to Malaysia's economy, supporting millions of jobs. 'We recognise the right to voice opinions, but it must be done responsibly and not at the expense of national harmony. We must protect our stability to ensure the success of Visit Malaysia 2026 and the continued growth of the people's economy,' he added. The latest rally, held on Saturday at Dataran Merdeka, saw nearly 15,000 people in attendance.

[UPDATED] Jo Ghani: 465 federal land encroachment cases recorded since 2015

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 465 cases of encroachment on federal land were recorded from 2015 to May 2025, said Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. The acting Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability minister said most encroachers use the land for squatter housing, small businesses, food stalls, and car wash operations. "According to the Land and Mines Department, there have been 465 cases of encroachment on federal land from 2015 to May 2025. "The total area of land owned by the Federal government is 215,406 hectares. In the case of Penang, 26 complaints involved encroachment on federal land, affecting 18 land lots. "To deal with encroachment on federal land, the Land and Mines Department will coordinate with enforcement agencies, ministries, and the relevant departments. Under Section 425 of the National Land Code, enforcement notices will be issued to encroachers, for them to vacate the site. The relevant agency must then implement control measures to prevent further encroachment," he said in the Dewan Rakyat during Minister's Question Time. He was responding to a question from Dr Siti Mastura Muhammad (PN-Kepala Batas), who asked for details on encroachments on federal-owned land nationwide, specifically in Penang, the actions taken against encroachers, and whether there are plans to develop the land. Johari said the respective ministry or department must take action by installing signboards, fencing off the area, hiring security guards, and demolishing any illegal structures built by encroachers. "In more serious cases where encroachers refuse to vacate and structures have already been built, legal action will be taken. If found guilty, the penalty may be up to RM500,000," he said. Johari said each parcel of federal land has been earmarked for development based on priorities and allocations approved by the federal government. "To ensure optimal use of federal land, the Land and Mines Department facilitates land conversion for use by other ministries and federal agencies that require it, including through rental and leasing arrangements," he said. He was responding to a question from Datuk Adnan Abu Hassan (BN-Kuala Pilah) on the ministry's long-term strategic plan to address the poor management of government assets, including abandoned buildings, which has led to encroachment and wastage of national resources. Johari said once a ministry or department is assigned a piece of federal land, it becomes their responsibility. If a project or building on the land is abandoned, the respective ministry must rehabilitate and repurpose it. "If the structure is old – over 40 or 50 years – and no longer suitable for use, the land must be returned to the federal government. The government will then consider alternative uses, such as affordable housing," he said.

Heated Exchange In Parliament Over 20-tonne Rubbish Collected Post-rally

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- A heated session unfolded in the Dewan Rakyat sitting today when Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) accused Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming of lying about the 20 tonnes of rubbish collected following Saturday's rally. Nga clarified that the figure was based on a report by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp). He said that the government respects the Federal Constitution and upholds democratic principles by allowing peaceful assemblies, but such gatherings must be conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner, including maintaining cleanliness. 'This includes maintaining cleanliness, and I was criticising unhygienic behaviour. I never said the Honourable Member for Pendang was the one who littered. "...the 20 tonnes of rubbish mentioned did not come from me. That figure was from the SWCorp report I received. Hundreds of our workers had to be mobilised to clean up the rubbish left behind after the black shirt rally," he said. Yesterday, Nga was reported as saying that a total of 20 tonnes of rubbish was collected following the rally, adding that cleanup operations were carried out until 3.30am. Meanwhile, Nga said that to date, 23 non-sanitary landfills have been safely closed under the Non-Sanitary Landfill Closure and Rehabilitation Plan, adding that another 155 open dumping sites nationwide will be closed in phases throughout the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) period. He said the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), through the National Solid Waste Management Department (JPSPN), is prioritising a progressive transformation from non-sanitary landfills to sanitary landfills equipped with leachate treatment plants, which function to treat the landfill liquid waste. In addition, he stated that the ministry has introduced a reuse approach for closed landfill sites by conducting rehabilitation efforts to ensure they are safe before developing them into public spaces, such as Lestari Parks, solar farms, and community facilities, thereby benefiting the local community.
