Ludhiana: Miles away from home, Tilakraj, a Nepal national, had been struggling to make ends meet for quite some time. It was not easy. A prolonged bout of ill-health had disrupted his meagre earnings as a labourer.

Eventually, he moved to Ludhiana in search for work and livelihood, but this is where he met his death. The 45-year-old, who had come from Haryana a few months ago, was having a post-dinner walk on Thursday night, when two men came on a scooter, stabbed him and sped away. On the rooftop of the rented accommodation, the victim's teenaged son witnessed his father's violent end and froze, horrified.
He later told the police that he had seen the accused before but did not know their names.
Police suspect that rivalry may have been the murder motive.
Tilakraj, who originally belonged to Nepal, had been living in Kurukshetra, Haryana, with his family for years. About five months ago, he moved to Ludhiana for work and got a rented house in Gujjar Bhawan, Meharban area.
Tilakraj's son, Danish, 18, said that his father was walking outside the house after dinner while he was standing on the terrace with a friend, when the two men stabbed his father.
He added that the accused did not speak to Tilakraj or try to rob him. His father's mobile phone was inside the house, and he only had Rs 200 in his pocket, which the accused did not snatch.
The family rushed Tilakraj to a nearby clinic, where the doctor asked them to take him to hospital. However, he succumbed on the way.
Inspector Paramdeep Singh, SHO, Meharban police station, said, "According to the victim's son, who has witnessed the murder, the accused only stopped near Tilakraj, stabbed him once, and escaped.

Police suspect rivalry as a reason behind the murder. The victim's son also told the police that he has seen the accused before but does not know their names."
During investigation, police found that the men had been asking for directions to Tilakraj's house. Tilakraj, who used to work as a labourer, had been jobless for some time due to health issues. He was suffering from jaundice and other health ailments, confirmed the police.
He is survived by his wife and five children, including three sons.

SAD accuses AAP of launching political vendetta against Majithia

Ludhiana: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing it of targeting senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia through politically motivated cases. SAD leaders claimed that Majithia was being denied civil liberties and was facing fresh legal action aimed at silencing the opposition. Addressing a press conference in Ludhiana, senior SAD leaders Maheshinder Singh Grewal and Dr Daljit Singh Cheema alleged that a false case had been registered against Majithia for allegedly obstructing a Vigilance Bureau raid at his Amritsar residence on June 25. They asserted that the raid was live-streamed, and the footage clearly showed that Majithia did not interfere with officials. Instead, they accused the Vigilance team of acting in a high-handed manner. "The team was not stopped from conducting its business in any way," said Grewal. He pointed out what he called a double standard, citing an incident where Union minister Ravneet Bittu allegedly physically stopped a police officer from arresting Congress leader Bharat Bhushan Ashu in a corruption case. "No FIR was filed then, but Majithia is being targeted only because AAP fears his presence among the people," he added. The leaders also claimed that the FIR was a retaliatory move after SAD legislator Ganieve Kaur Majithia filed a complaint with Chandigarh Police. She accused the Vigilance Bureau of criminal trespass into her official residence without a search warrant while she was in Amritsar. "The AAP government is jittery that legal action may be taken against its own team, and that's why it rushed to file a counter FIR against Majithia," said Dr Cheema. Grewal revealed that SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had sought a meeting with the Punjab governor to raise the issue. Although the governor was indisposed, the meeting is expected to take place within a week. "We will fight this battle both politically and legally. The AAP government's vendetta politics must be exposed," he said. The press conference also touched upon other controversies, including the Ananta Enclave project developed by Dakha MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali. Grewal alleged that Ayali had struck a deal with the AAP government, allowing him to construct a road on government land to access his colony. He further claimed that Ayali facilitated the entry of his son's father-in-law, former DIG Gurpreet Singh Gill, into AAP during the Ludhiana West by-election to shield himself from scrutiny. Dr Cheema also criticized the AAP government's new tender policy, which mandates that no road repair tender below Rs 50 crore be issued by the Mandi Board. He said the move undermines small local contractors and opens the door to corruption and favoritism toward outsiders. MSID:: 123043831 413 |

Delhi court dismisses defamation case filed by AAP's Satyendra Jain against BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj

A Delhi court on Thursday dismissed an appeal filed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Satyendar Kumar Jain in a defamation case against Bharatiya Janata Party MP Bansuri Swaraj, citing that merely repeating information already in the public domain does not amount to defamation. The court also criticised the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which had initially posted on X the information shared by the BJP MP, saying that the central agency holds the responsibility of sharing only accurate and non-misleading information with the public. Special Judge Jitendra Singh of the Rouse Avenue Courts observed that sufficient ground does not exist for taking cognisance of the offence as defined and punishable under Section 356 of the BNS. The case filed by Mr. Jain is based on 'defamatory' comments about him during a television interview by Ms. Swaraj. The AAP leader stated that during the interview, Ms. Swaraj allegedly claimed that ₹3 crore in cash, 1.8 kilograms of gold, and 133 gold coins were recovered from the AAP leader's house. The ED also shared this information on its social media handle. Mr. Jain alleged that the statement made on TV had damaged his reputation. Mr. Jain had challenged a trial court order that rejected his criminal defamation complaint against the BJP MP earlier this year. In a strongly worded message, the court said that it is incumbent upon an investigative agency such as the ED to act impartially and uphold the principles of fairness and due process. 'Any dissemination of information, including but not limited to official social media platforms, must be accurate, non-misleading, and free from sensationalism,' the court said. 'The presentation of facts in a manner that is misleading, scandalous, or inten to defame or politically prejudice an individual would not only undermine the integrity of the agency but may also amount to an abuse of power and violation of the individual's fundamental rights, including the right to reputation under Article 21 of the Constitution,' it said. While dismissing the defamation case, the court added that there was no 'willful misrepresentation or malicious intent' of the accused, hence Ms. Swaraj cannot be held liable for the alleged offence of defamation. 'If at all any statement is perceived as defamatory, the liability, if any, would lie with the source agency, i.e., the ED, which originally disseminated the information. The proposed accused, being a secondary communicator of officially released material, cannot be fastened with criminal liability, especially in the absence of intent to harm the reputation of the Complainant,' it added.

Punjab CM Mann, Kejriwal launch drug prevention curriculum to be introduced in schools

Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann and (AAP) national convener on Friday unveiled the anti-drug curriculum to be introduced in schools under "war against drugs" campaign with an aim to make eight lakh students aware against the menace of drugs. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Addressing the gathering, the AAP chief said this marks the beginning of a new chapter in Punjab's battle against drugs from the state's border district. Punjab's war against drugs has now reached a crucial stage, said Kejriwal, adding as part of the third phase of the state government's campaign "Yudh Nashian Virudh" (war against drugs) -- a special syllabus is being introduced in all government schools for students from classes 9 to 12. The former Delhi chief minister said that eight lakh students from these classes will be made aware of the dangers of drug abuse through this syllabus and encouraged to stay away from narcotic substances. Kejriwal said this anti-drug programme will involve 3,658 schools and renowned scientists will also take part in raising awareness among students. The curriculum will include 35-minute sessions to be conducted fortnightly over 27 weeks and will include documentaries, quizzes, posters and interactive activities, he added. The AAP national convener said these sessions will focus on major themes such as busting myths about drugs, strategies to say no to drugs and resisting peer pressure. This path breaking initiative will be replicated in other states too for wiping out the menace of drugs, he envisioned. Kejriwal said Punjab shares an international border with Pakistan which made it a drug route for smugglers. The AAP chief said the state government has already launched the "Yudh Nashian Virudh" (war against drugs) campaign and under this initiative, more than 15,000 drug traffickers have been sent to jail, properties have been seized and over 1,000 kilograms of heroin have been recovered. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The properties acquired by drug smugglers through illegal drug trade are being demolished, he added. Targeting the previous regimes, Kejriwal said that they remained mum on the plight of the state due to drugs "but are supporting the kingpin of drugs". He said the 'Nasha Mukti Yatra' has reached more than 10,000 villages and wards of the state, adding the desired results are coming. The AAP national convener said it is the responsibility of every youth to support this unique and noble initiative of the Punjab government. It is unfortunate that no state or country has remained untouched by the menace of drugs, he added. Kejriwal exhorted the people of Punjab to unite and pledge to make the society drug-free. Addressing the gathering, chief minister Mann said the crusade against drugs has been ongoing for the past 150 days and hundreds of panchayats have passed resolutions pledging they will never support drug traffickers. This war against drugs has now transformed into a mass movement, said Mann, adding the state government has introduced anti-drug education into the school syllabus as part of it. The chief minister said students will be made aware of the dangers of drug addiction as the first use of drugs marks the beginning of a ruined life. A complete facelift of government schools has taken place due to the state government's strenuous efforts, he added. Mann claimed that students are leaving private schools and joining government schools which shows people's trust in them. He alleged the blot of drugs has been put on the face of the state by the previous governments. The chief minister said "it took us time to formulate a strategy" after his party came to power in the state. "The state government started de-addiction centres to ensure treatment for those giving up drugs. The state government is also working to skill them and enable them to live life with dignity and pride," he added.
