Rent a local storage unit for your dorm stuff
If you're here, you've probably already had this thought, but it's a good one for many students. Some colleges actually offer storage units for students — some for free — so before you do anything else, check if your school has this option before you lug all of your stuff off campus. Of course, this won't be possible for everyone, so you may need to look at local options outside of campus.
If storing your stuff on campus is out, check around for a local storage facility. This could be a task of its own, and you can expect others in your situation are also looking into storage units as close to their dorms as possible, so you may need to look a bit further out than you'd like to find the right price for yourself. Another factor will be how large of a unit you'll need. Your local U-Haul, for instance, may have self-storage facilities you can rent for the summer.

Look into a moving or storage service
If convenience is your top priority and you have the funds for it, then a moving or storage service that caters specifically to college students may be just what you need. If you're looking for a more frugal route, hit up a friend who lives in the area or is staying on or near campus while you're gone. This will likely be your cheapest option, and if they're a really good friend, it could possibly be free. You might still consider giving them a six-pack when you pick your stuff up.
Think about selling some of your stuff
Books, towels, sheets. Those are easy to pack up. If you are holding onto large items, you'll obviously need a larger space to store your stuff. If you want to save some money, do some research on how much it would cost to store your items versus selling them and buying new stuff when you come back.
Unless you have an emotional attachment to your things, a big item like a desk or chair can easily be sold or donated and then repurchased later and possibly for cheaper. Even if you were to sell just your large items, you might be able to save money on a smaller storage unit, if that's the route you choose. This will require doing some math to see if it makes sense for you to do.

Linda details the highs and lows of her life — from becoming a mom of 8 to weathering two divorces — in her new memoir, Your Payment Method Has Been Declined, released earlier this month. Linda was raised in New Jersey by parents she describes in her book as "a combination of 24k gold and dusted with really amazing Italian dark chocolate and covered in M&Ms." As a child, she traveled so often thanks to her father's work that she thought going on a vacation every couple of weeks was just the way life worked. And whenever her parents pulled her out of Catholic school to travel around the world she says, "the nuns would always say, 'You know what? Travel is education,' and they were right." While Linda enjoyed an idyllic childhood, her own start to parenthood was marked by a significant loss: that of her mother Olga, who died of breast cancer complications just five weeks after Linda, then 28, welcomed her first child, son Devin. Years later, in 2003, her father Mario died of lymphoma — and the next year, Linda was diagnosed with kidney cancer. "The cancer diagnosis threw me for a loop. You realize you can die," Linda tells PEOPLE. "It stopped me from getting emotional about stupid things." Another shift that happened after her father's death was that Linda started having major money troubles. Although her father left money for Linda and her three half-siblings, her situation was complicated by the involvement of trustees. (While Linda is unable to say how much money she lost because of legal restrictions, she says the figure is in the millions.) "There was a fortune I couldn't touch, smell or get a screenshot of unless some other person told me I could," she writes in her memoir. "I was told how much of it I could see or use and on what." Linda also admits she struggled with "handling money," writing, "I gave it away to make others happy all the time." Unfortunately, she became "broke by the time I was 52." Her financial instability resulted in some uncomfortable situations. For instance, she claimed that a landscaper who had been working on her home once showed up at her door with his father — and demanded payment in the form of Linda's engagement ring. "I had the reputation as being a giver," she says. "And when you can't do that anymore, when you run into a hole and you try to explain this to them, they're like, 'Wait a minute — don't you have a million dollars in your mattress?' " "It's been a horribly frustrating thing to go through," she adds. As a result of her finances, Linda says she's been unable to provide certain experiences for her kids to the level she'd like — like taking them on shopping trips or throwing them graduation parties. "Those things that used to be so simple are not anymore," she says. Through all of the changes she's been through, Linda tells PEOPLE her children have always been a key motivator for her. "In the last couple of years, things have changed: I got divorced, I moved and I sold my house. You're changing your mindset and you're almost in a panic," she says. "But everything I have done from the time I had Devin until today has been about them, trying to make our lives easier financially so I can give to them." When it comes to treating herself, the self-professed "girly-girl" who loves makeup and fashion, says that she still does what she can. "I love Shein," she says with a laugh. "I found great drugstore makeup instead of going to Sephora. So I managed to keep myself whole by making little tweaks here and there." These days, Linda has been happily remarried since January 2024 to man she describes as "very supportive," has a great relationship with her children and feels less anxious. As for her financial situation, she says that it's "definitely not where I want it to be," but that she's hopeful "things will get better through hard work and a change of trustees yet again." Premium partnerships are forged at the debut GTM Luxury
PHOENIX -- The clock strikes 10:16 a.m. and the room buzzes with handshakes, introductions and the swapping of business cards. At the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa here, the inaugural GTM Luxury, hosted by Northstar Travel Group (Travel Weekly's parent company), with its speed-dating-style approach to meetings between travel advisors and suppliers, is in full swing. The minutes fly by, but it's enough time to form relationships. GTM Luxury is the newest rendition of Northstar's invitation-only Global Travel Marketplace events. To be selected to attend, advisors must sell at least $1 million annually to clients who spend a minimum of $1,000 per person, per day; have at least two years of experience selling luxury travel; and have a roster of high-net-worth clients. At her table at the JW Marriott's conference center, Kristen Buckshire, who owns Travel Ease and is based in Augusta, Ga., has 52 appointments over two days with luxury-focused suppliers. Buckshire, who specializes in luxury family travel, is meeting with brands like Rental Escapes, Crystal and Scenic Luxury Cruises. While meeting with Arts & Leisure Tours, Buckshire tells the tour operator it may be a match for a client who wants to plan a multigenerational trip to Grand Cayman. "It seems like they have a good pulse on the luxury experience," Buckshire later says of Arts & Leisure, adding that she didn't currently have a good supplier for custom Caribbean trips. While still at GTM, she has already texted clients about the brand. Buckshire, who is on track to sell $5 million to $6 million in travel this year between Travel Ease and the recently acquired Margaret's Travel, has attended other GTM events but was drawn to the luxury-focused version to meet suppliers who understand the experience her clients crave. "They need something very curated -- very high-end -- to feel like they are getting that experience and leaving their kids with that legacy of travel," she says. In searching for suppliers, Buckshire says she and her husband, Justin, who left his corporate job to oversee Margaret's Travel, are on the hunt for "authenticity": suppliers with unique experiences that can't be replicated. GTM Luxury was created to meet the soaring luxury travel demand, said Alicia Evanko-Lewis, executive vice president of events for Northstar. And more are planned: The next GTM Luxury will be in January in Los Angeles, and GTM Luxury APAC is on tap in Singapore in April. Turner, who is set to do $2 million in sales this year, mostly in group travel, says planning a group safari trip was a leap of faith, but she feels confident in the operator since it was vetted by the GTM team. Typically, Turner won't bring a group back to a destination for at least five years after they've visited, but she's breaking the rule for Ntaba African Safaris. "It was that amazing," she says of the safari. "GTM works." PCS Purgatory: The untold chaos of moving overseas with kids, pets, and a whole lot of baggage
They tell how to prepare for moving overseas. They give you a checklist. They tell you what forms you need, how many immunizations your dog needs, and how to ship a car across the ocean (spoiler alert: it's expensive and never on time). But what no one tells you — not your sponsor, not the Facebook group, not even your seasoned milspouse bestie — is what happens in the weird, messy middle. Welcome to PCS purgatory. It's that stretch of time after the movers take every last spoon, sock, and sanity-saving air fryer — and before your plane takes off to your new life overseas. And if you've got kids, pets, or overly sentimental relatives (or all three), prepare yourself. This isn't just a move. This is a multi-week expedition through delayed paperwork, doggy drama, Target runs in four states, and the emotional whiplash of 'final goodbyes' on a rolling loop. Step One: The Purge ('Do We Really Need This?') It starts with the great military cleansing. You swear this PCS will be different. This time, you're not taking the broken lamp. You're not emotionally attached to the 45 mismatched Tupperware lids. You Marie Kondo your life like you're on a Netflix special — until the night before pack-out when you're shoving random junk drawers into bags labeled 'Important Stuff.' Then the movers come. You pretend you're organized. But you're not. No one ever is. And…you will most likely purge again when you unpack at your new home so good luck. Step Two: Bag Lady Era Begins Once your household goods are gone, you enter the Nomad Phase. You're now living out of suitcases packed in a fog of sleep deprivation and false confidence. You told yourself, 'I'll only pack essentials for 30 days.' Translation: your kids have five swimsuits, no pants, and your husband's wearing socks from 2009. At this point, you've also officially become a master of the car trunk puzzle. Every goodbye trip adds a new duffel, memory box, or Costco-sized bag of snacks someone insisted you 'might need on the flight.' Step Three: The Tour de Goodbyes Your PCS route now includes a farewell circuit across multiple states — grandmas, cousins, old duty stations, random friends from AIT who suddenly want to reconnect. You crash on air mattresses and couches. You become a connoisseur of free guest Wi-Fi and lukewarm coffee. Your kids are feral. Your dog is confused. You don't know what time zone you're in, but you've cried at three airports and iHOPS, so the emotion is real (Secret tip: if you ask nicely, the airport check-in agent may give your loved ones passes to go through security and wait with you until the flight boards). Step Four: Financial Free-Fall You thought you budgeted. You did not. The cost of hotels, fast food, airport snacks, last-minute souvenirs, and extra luggage fees (because someone definitely didn't repack that carry-on like they said they would) hits harder than deployment separation pay. And don't mention the pet clearance fee just to get your anxious golden doodle on base overseas. Step Five: You're Still Not There Even when you board that international flight, there's no magical relief. Jet lag, customs, waiting for command sponsorship paperwork, housing holdovers, temporary lodging, and wondering whether your unaccompanied baggage will ever show up — PCS purgatory doesn't end with wheels up. It ends when your kids are enrolled in school, your dog's paperwork finally clears, and you find the box with your coffee maker. And when that day finally comes, you'll exhale. You'll laugh (maybe). You'll start rebuilding a rhythm. And you'll forget just enough chaos to do it all again in 24-36 months. Moral of the Story:Moving overseas isn't just about the logistics. It's an emotional rollercoaster wrapped in bubble wrap and duct tape. It's about the people you say goodbye to, the pieces of yourself you leave behind, and the new adventures you roll into with coffee breath and carry-on anxiety. So if you're in PCS purgatory right now? You're not alone. Keep your head up, your bags light(ish), and your humor intact.
