Kinda Alloush to Be Honoured at Aswan Women's Film Festival in May

The Aswan International Women's Film Festival will honour acclaimed Syrian actress Kinda Alloush during its ninth edition, which runs from May 2nd to the 7th, 2025. Organisers announced that this year's edition will also pay tribute to Egyptian music legend Umm Kulthum, commemorating 50 years since her passing with a theme dedicated to her enduring cultural impact.
Alloush is being recognised for her powerful performances in films that reflect the complexities of women's experiences in the Arab world. Her career includes major roles in Egyptian and Syrian cinema, such as Hatem Ali's 'Shaghaf' and Sherif Arafa's 'Welad El Am', both noted for their explorations of gender and societal dynamics.
More recently, Alloush starred in Suhaib Gasmelbari's internationally acclaimed film 'Nuzuh', which won the Audience Award at the Venice International Film Festival. She also appeared in the Netflix-backed feature 'The Swimmers', directed by BAFTA-nominated Welsh-Egyptian filmmaker Sally El-Hosaini. The film was screened at major international festivals including Toronto, London, and Cairo.
Her work in Egyptian cinema includes prominent roles in 'Hepta', 'Al-Fagoumi', and 'Al-Asliyeen', while on television she has featured in several popular Ramadan dramas such as 'Ekhwati' and 'Setat Beit El Maadi'.
Organised with the support of Egypt's Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and Ministry of Social Solidarity, the Aswan International Women's Film Festival continues to spotlight female-driven narratives. The festival is also backed by the National Council for Women and the Aswan Governorate.

Korean Cultural Center Launches Traditional Korean Folk Painting Workshop
Nada Mustafa The Korean Cultural Center in Egypt inaugurated its Traditional Korean Folk Painting Workshop (Minhwa) today at its premises in Dokki. Running from August 3 to 5, the workshop offers participants a unique opportunity to explore the vibrant and symbolic world of minhwa, an integral part of Korea's artistic heritage. Organized by the Korean Cultural Center and curated by the King Sejong Institute Foundation, the workshop is part of the Sejong Culture Academy — a flagship cultural initiative that dispatches Korean culture experts worldwide to deliver immersive programs and foster global appreciation of Korean traditions. Led by distinguished Korean artists, the workshop provides hands-on training in traditional painting techniques, materials, and motifs. Participants will also gain deeper insight into the historical, cultural, and philosophical dimensions of minhwa, making the experience both creatively enriching and educational. The program is designed for students of the Sejong Institute at the Korean Cultural Center in Egypt, as well as local enthusiasts of Korean culture and art. 'Through this workshop, we aim to share a living aspect of Korean heritage and inspire Egyptian artists to connect with it,' said Mr. Oh Sung-ho, Director of the Korean Cultural Center. 'We hope this initiative strengthens cultural ties and promotes artistic dialogue between Korea and Egypt.' Minhwa paintings are renowned for their expressive style and rich symbolism, often depicting themes such as prosperity, longevity, and harmony. Popular motifs include the 'Four Gracious Plants' — plum blossom, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo — representing the seasons and virtues in Korean philosophy, as well as everyday scenes, landscapes, and folkloric subjects. Known for their vivid colors and intricate detail, minhwa paintings embody both tradition and personal expression, continuing to resonate with contemporary audiences. Yamen Mekdad on Memory, Exile & Reclaiming Syria Through Sound
The Syrian music researcher and archivist Yamen Mekdad unpacks his archiving approach, his journey through the revolution, exile, and return, and how he aims to reimagine Syria's creative future. Aug 03, 2025 Yamen Mekdad is a Syrian music researcher, sound archivist and community organiser whose practice, rooted in radical collaborations, focuses on the relationship between sound, place and the human condition. Pulling from his expansive collection of field recordings, folk and experimental electronic music, his work maps the emotional weight of sonic memory in a country where archives have been fragmented, censored or entirely erased. With a penchant for grassroots organising, Mekdad founded several collectives while living in exile in London, including Sawt of the Earth, Makkam and Sadaa Sound Syndicate, dedicating his efforts to excavating what official histories left out and amplifying the raw, forgotten sounds of the underground scene in Syria. He also co-produced Sawt Syria, a collaborative project with Boiler Room exploring Syria's diasporic sonic identities through experimental performance and soundwork. He is currently the co-producer and curator of the Syrian Cassette Archives, a public archive founded by researcher and audio archaeologist Mark Gergis in 2021 to preserve and digitise Syria's lost cassette era. After years in exile, he's now back in his hometown, Damascus, to build a shapeshifting creative hub and production company that acts as both a living archive and artistic incubator for local talents across various mediums and disciplines, reclaiming cultural narratives and making space for stories often missing from global conversations about Syria. Earlier this year, we caught up with Yamen to delve deep into his archiving approach, and the role of sound in preserving and reinterpreting identity. He also reflects on his journey through the revolution, exile, and return, and how he aims to reimagine Syria's creative future from within, not in spite of, its fractured present.
