USA, Nepal and Bhutan were among eight countries honoured at the 2024 ICC Development Awards, announced during the annual board meeting of the International Cricket Council on Sunday.
USA Cricket received the ICC Associate Member Men's Team Performance of the Year award for their strong showings last year, which included qualifying for the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup. Co-hosting the tournament with the West Indies, the US side defeated Canada and pulled off a stunning win over Pakistan — knocking Babar Azam's team out of the competition and drawing huge attention.
Bhutan and Nepal also made the winners' list, along with Indonesia, Namibia, Scotland, Tanzania and Vanuatu.
In total, 15 Associate Member countries had been shortlisted for the awards.

Commenting on the awards, ICC chairman Jay Shah said, 'It is a pleasure to announce the global winners of the ICC Development Awards. This is a celebration of global exceptionalism, with all winners worthy of the accolades they have received in their mission to grow the game in emerging nations,' as quoted by PTI.
Namibia won the ICC Development Initiative of the Year award for its Ashburton Kwata Mini-Cricket Programme, a grassroots cricket project that has become a key part of the country's development strategy.

Head coach Scott Flemming hopes Indian cagers improve 3-point conversions in Asia Cup

India's wins over higher-ranked opponents in qualifying rounds will serve as a confidence-booster CHENNAI: The India men's basketball team will enter the FIBA Asia Cup in Jeddah as underdogs. India are placed alongside heavyweights China, Jordan and hosts Saudi Arabia in Pool C. In the qualifying rounds, the Indian cagers defeated a few higher-ranked teams, showing what they are capable of. In the build-up to the continental event, India had an exposure tour to Qatar, where they won and lost one match each. Head coach Scott Flemming insisted that the preparations have been good but felt that there could have been more game time for the players. 'We probably wish that we had more exposure trips, like the other teams. Some have played 10 to 15 games this month. A few exposure tours did not work out for us due to different reasons, but I think our training has been good, and we are doing the best we can,' Flemming told TOI on the sidelines of a practice session at the National Sports Centre in Chennai. 'The two matches against Qatar were helpful. I think we played one of our worst defensive games in the first match but bounced back with one of our best defensive performances in the second,' Flemming added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Access all TV channels without a subscription! Techno Mag Learn More Undo Apart from defence, the coach believes that the three-point conversion rate will be crucial. In the wins against higher-ranked teams Kazakhstan and Bahrain during the qualifying rounds, India showcased strong shooting from beyond the arc. 'You cannot always rely on three-pointers, but for now, it is going to be a point of emphasis. We have performed well against top-ranked opposition when we have good three-point shooting accuracy. 'Everybody says that you kind of live and die by three pointers. But if we do not shoot threes, I think it is going to be tough for us to beat China and Jordan. None of the games will be easy. We also need to limit turnovers and rebound well.' Forward Amjyot Singh, one of the senior-most players, is not part of the squad due to injury, while youngster Sahaij Pratap Singh is making a comeback after eight months, having recovered from injury and illness. Amaan Sandhu, who plays in NCAA Division I, has returned to the squad after two years. Meanwhile, former captain Vishesh Bhriguvanshi and Baladhaneshwar Poiyamozhi have been dropped from the team. 'Amjyot is a costly miss, as he is one of the most well-rounded players; hopefully, he will be back for the World Cup qualifying round (in November). Sahaij said that he is 85 per cent fit, and I hope he recovers completely soon.' Squad: Pranav Prince, Sahaij Pratap Singh, Princepal Singh, Arvind Kumar, Palpreet Singh, Harsh Dagar, Muin Bek Hafeez, Vaishak Manoj, Kanwar Gurbaj Singh, Arvinder Singh, Pratyanshu Tomar, Amaan Sandhu. ‘Pressure doesn't matter, but my own expectations and goals do': Divya Deshmukh

Divya Deshmukh (FIDE Photo) NAGPUR: 'Failures make you much stronger than success. The struggles of being beaten left to right in the open tournaments that I played before the World Cup definitely helped me become what I am,' said Divya Deshmukh said on Thursday. In her first interaction with the media in her hometown after achieving a hat-trick of successes in Batumi, Georgia, Divya had a lot to say. The 19-year-old went to Batumi as an International Master (IM) and came back home as a Grandmaster (GM). In the final, Divya defeated India No. 1 Koneru Humpy to win the World Cup. She also secured her spot in the Candidates tournament. Excerpts from an interaction with the media... HER WEAPON I always had aggression in my game. I can say my opening preparations have always been a weapon. To play attacking chess and get into complicated positions are my tactics, which make the mind games easier for me. This is just my style of playing. PRESSURE IN THE FINAL Humpy is a much stronger player, and I have so much respect for her. In the first game, it was more of my failure than her success. I was quite upset after the first game because I had a very good position and knew how to win it. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo I just didn't play it. So it definitely added pressure. The way I played in the second game with black pieces gave me confidence. Though Humpy is the reigning world rapid champion, I needed to have faith in myself and in my preparations. Since I was ready, I don't think there was any such pressure. TOUGH MATCHES I don't think I had any easy match in the World Cup. From an emotional perspective, the quarterfinals against Zhu Jiner were tough, and the finals was incredibly difficult. Against Zhu, I had a really bad head-to-head score, so quite difficult. Definitely the most difficult tournament of my career. HER EXPECTATIONS I have been carrying pressure for many years, so after a point, it doesn't matter. For me, what matters is my own expectations and my own goals. Pressure will always be there; it comes to your mind, but I am glad that I don't dwell upon it, don't think about it. SIMILARITY WITH GUKESH I think the fact that we both fight till the end is the biggest similarity. We started chess when we were kids at five or six. To go to the top, we need to depend on some factors like your environment, financial backing and support system. GOALS AND PLANS My goals have changed because in Batumi I got my GM title. It's time to come up with new goals. I am going to play Grand Swiss next and would like to win it. I don't think anything has changed for me. It is just that I reached one of my goals, but there are like 100 more left. And I am not satisfied. I am hoping this is just the beginning. COACH, SECONDS IN WORLD CUP In this tournament, I was helped by Hungarian GM Csaba Balogh, who spent sleepless nights. I think he had a harder time than me during the tournament. Indian GM Abhimanyu Puranik also helped me. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
