Jasprit Bumrah left out! Ravi Shastri reveals India's greatest cricketers; Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar included

The veteran recently shared his thoughts on several topics relating to the Indian cricket team and the ongoing five-Test series in England. While Shastri shared his opinions on the upcoming 4th Test at Old Trafford, he also named his top five best Indian players of all time. In a lively discussion with former cricketers and legends of the sport, including the likes of Phil Tufnell, Sir Alastair Cook, David Lloyd and Michael Vaughan, Shastri was asked to name his top five Indian cricketers. Put on the spot by this difficult question, the 63-year-old, albeit with difficulty, named his top five. Shastri immediately listed his picks: Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni as the five best Indian cricketers of all time. The veteran justified his selections, saying that he looked to each era—the '70s, '80s, '90s, and so on—to finalize his choices. '(Sunil) Gavaskar, Sachin (Tendulkar), Virat definitely. I'm looking at the most influential players of that era. He later added Kapil Dev to complete his list. Sachin Tendulkar's first international hundred: The Farokh Engineer connection, bbq and a swing! Another interesting observation Shastri made was when he considered adding pace stalwart Jasprit Bumrah to the list. However, he quickly dismissed the idea, saying Bumrah still has more cricket left in him, and that his selections were based on players who had either retired or were nearing the end of their careers. The former head coach then went on to name the best-ever from his list of top five stars. While Alastair Cook prodded Shastri to name Sunil Gavaskar as the 'Godfather' from the list, he insisted that Gavaskar was the best in terms of batting, but not overall. 'I would put the entire package—number one would be Tendulkar because of the expectations, longevity, for having played 24 years in the game, for 100 hundreds. He played every pace attack of that decade,' said Shastri, justifying Tendulkar as his number one pick. Poll Who do you think is the best Indian cricketer of all time? Sachin Tendulkar Sunil Gavaskar MS Dhoni Kapil Dev He also praised Sachin's technique and class. As India buckles up for the penultimate Test of the five-match series, Shastri will be rooting for his fellow countrymen to pull off the win and level the series. An England win will put the series victory out of reach for the Shubman Gill-led side. The 4th Test at Old Trafford Cricket Ground commences on Wednesday, July 23. Bhutan and Nepal also made the winners' list, along with Indonesia, Namibia, Scotland, Tanzania and Vanuatu. In total, 15 Associate Member countries had been shortlisted for the awards. IND vs ENG Test: 'I feel out of place sharing the name with Sachin' - James Anderson on Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy

England's veteran fast bowler James Anderson has admitted he feels 'out of place' sharing the name of a trophy with Indian legend , despite his own extraordinary achievements in Test cricket. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking to Sky Sports Cricket during the ongoing India-England Test series, Anderson, who turned 42 this year, expressed deep humility after the new Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy was unveiled ahead of the five-Test series in England. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. 'I feel completely out of place when I see myself alongside him with the trophy,' Anderson said. 'As I said, I hold him in such high regard. It is strange that when people talk about what I have achieved in cricket, like when I hear about it as if someone's talking about someone else, if that makes sense. Like, I don't feel it is me who has achieved all this. It sounds really strange, but that is how my head works. I just can't quite believe the things that come with playing for such a long time. ' Sachin Tendulkar's first international hundred: The Farokh Engineer connection, bbq and a swing! The trophy, named after two giants of the game, will now represent all future Test series played between India and England. Previously, the teams competed for the Pataudi Trophy in England and the Anthony de Mello Trophy in India. Poll How do you feel about the rivalry between India and England in Test cricket? It's the best rivalry in cricket. It's intense but has its ups and downs. I prefer other rivalries. Both Anderson and Tendulkar were present in London for the unveiling, just a day before the series opener. Reflecting on the honour then, Anderson had said: 'It's a proud moment for me and my family to have this iconic series named after Sachin and myself. The rivalry between our two nations has always been something special, full of history, intensity and unforgettable moments.'

'A coach also needs time': Harbhajan Singh backs split-coaching system as Gautam Gambhir's Test team falters

Gautam Gambhir NEW DELHI: In the wake of India's contrasting fortunes under Gautam Gambhir across formats, former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has advocated for a split-coaching system, suggesting that separate coaches for red-ball and white-ball cricket could be beneficial for the national team. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Gambhir, who took charge as India's head coach following the T20 World Cup 2024, has found early success in the shorter formats. India clinched the ICC Champions Trophy under him and have recorded 13 wins and two defeats in T20Is since he took over. However, the same success has eluded the team in Tests, where they are currently trailing 1-2 in the five-match series against England, following a whitewash by New Zealand and a series defeat to Australia. Why Team India came to Manchester from London via train and walked in rain Speaking to India Today, Harbhajan Singh made a compelling case for format-specific coaching roles. Poll Should India adopt a split-coaching system for red-ball and white-ball cricket? Yes, it will enhance performance. No, one coach is sufficient. "I feel if it can be implemented, there is nothing wrong in it. You have different teams and different players for formats. If we can do it, it's a good option. It will reduce workload for everyone, including the coaches," Harbhajan said. He further explained that even coaches require time and mental space to prepare adequately for different formats, and managing all three consistently can be overwhelming. Sachin Tendulkar's first international hundred: The Farokh Engineer connection, bbq and a swing! "Your coach also needs time to prepare for a series. Like five Tests against Australia, then in England, then elsewhere. So the coach can prepare and set out what his team should be. The same goes for a white-ball coach. He will need time to prepare as well," he added. Highlighting the personal toll coaching can take, he emphasised: "If you overwork one coach for the whole year, he, too, has a family and responsibilities. Traveling constantly with family isn't easy. So yes, if you ask me, splitting red-ball and white-ball coaching is a good move." Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Jasprit Bumrah's replacement for 4th Test in Manchester revealed: 'Can swing the ball both ways'

Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah (Getty Images NEW DELHI: India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah remains a doubtful starter for the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, scheduled to begin on July 23 in Manchester. With India trailing 1-2 in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, Bumrah's availability is seen as crucial—especially in light of the pre-series plan that he would feature in only three of the five matches. Having already played the first and third Tests at Leeds and Lord's, the Indian team management now faces the decision of whether to field him in the fourth or save him for the series finale. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Veteran Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has suggested that left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh should step in if Bumrah is rested. "If Bumrah is not playing, Arshdeep is the guy. Because in England, you need a left-arm seamer who can swing the ball both ways, and also, with a different angle, he can create that rough for the spinners. So, if Bumrah doesn't play, Arshdeep should play the next one," Rahane said on his YouTube channel. Rahane also weighed in on the team's spin options, specifically Kuldeep Yadav. Sachin Tendulkar's first international hundred: The Farokh Engineer connection, bbq and a swing! "Depending on the condition of the wicket, I feel Kuldeep should play. If the wicket is similar to the last three Test matches, Kuldeep should play because you need guys who can get you those wickets. Our batting unit is doing really well. Even if you score 25-30 runs less, that's okay. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Are Watching Tariffs - Few Are Watching What Nvidia Just Launched Seeking Alpha Read More Undo But you need people who can get you those wickets. You don't want to depend on your leading fast bowlers every time." Arshdeep, who has picked up 99 wickets in 63 T20Is, is still awaiting his Test debut. However, his participation in Manchester has been thrown into doubt due to an injury suffered during a practice session. The pacer sustained a cut when he was hit by a ball while training, prompting medical attention. Tracing Moeen Ali's steps in Birmingham "He took a ball while he was bowling there. So he hit a ball, and he tried to stop it and it's just a cut. So we have to see how bad the cut is. Obviously, the medical team have taken him off to see a doctor and obviously, if he needs stitches or does he not, that will be important to our planning for the next few days." With just two matches left in the series, India must win both to clinch a comeback series victory. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
