
US Hiring Beats Expectations In June Despite Tariff Worries
Job growth came in at 147,000 last month, rising from a 144,000 figure in May -- which was also revised upwards -- said the Department of Labor.
The unemployment rate ticked down from 4.2 percent to 4.1 percent, and wage gains decelerated to 0.2 percent, the report added.
The world's biggest economy has fared relatively well since the Covid-19 pandemic, with a resilient jobs market allowing consumers to keep spending.
But Trump's sweeping tariffs on US trading partners, including steep rates on imports of steel, aluminum and autos, have dragged on consumer sentiment and fueled business uncertainty.
That uncertainty has been accentuated by the US leader's approach of unveiling, then adjusting or halting measures -- causing firms to become cautious in investments.
With a further wave of tariff hikes potentially incoming next week, analysts are monitoring for fragility in the job market and signs that companies might pull back in hiring and expansion.
A consensus forecast by Briefing.com had expected overall job growth of 120,000.
In June, the state government and health care sectors added jobs while the federal government continued shedding roles, the Labor Department said Thursday.
The federal government lost 7,000 jobs and employment is down by 69,000 since reaching a recent peak in January, the report added.
But salary growth appears to be cooling, from a 0.4 percent month-on-month increase in May to 0.2 percent in June.
From a year ago, wage gains were up 3.7 percent, easing from the prior month as well.
But the figures will bring relief to observers worried after data from payroll firm ADP sparked alarm Wednesday, as it reported that the private sector unexpectedly shed jobs.
It is not uncommon for the ADP report to diverge from official figures, but analysts believe it can help understand the longer-term trajectory of the labor market.
ADP noted Wednesday that although layoffs were rare, there remains a hesitancy to hire and replace departing workers.
For now, a solid labor market is likely to give the US central bank some room to hold interest rates steady for longer as policymakers observe the effects of Trump's tariffs over the summer -- and whether they will fuel broad inflation.
If the labor market weakened too quickly, the Federal Reserve could be inclined to lower rates sooner to boost the economy, even if inflation were not progressing downwards as swiftly as hoped.

'Into A Void': Young US College Graduates Face Employment Crisis
Over two years, Rebecca Atkins filed more than 250 job applications, and felt like every one was going into a gaping chasm -- one opened by the highest unemployment rate for recent college graduates in the United States in more than a decade. "It was extremely dispiriting," said the 25-year-old, who graduated in 2022 with a degree in law and justice from a university in the US capital Washington. "I was convinced that I was a terrible person, and terrible at working." At 5.8 percent, unemployment for young, recent graduates from US universities is higher than it has been since November 2013, excluding 15 months in the Covid pandemic, according to official data. Moreover, it has also remained stubbornly higher than overall unemployment -- an extremely unusual situation, analysts say. And while overall US unemployment has stabilized between around 3.5 and 4 percent post-pandemic, unemployment for recent college graduates is only trending higher. The labor market for new grads has weakened consistently since 2022, with new hiring down 16 percent in 2025, year-over-year, according to payroll firm Gusto. Analysts say the trend is likely a result of cyclical post-pandemic hiring slowdowns -- particularly in new-grad-heavy sectors like technology, finance, and business information -- and overall economic uncertainty in the tumultuous early days of the Trump administration. That is scant consolation to the droves of young people -- often saddled with huge amounts of student debt -- on the hunt for their first full-time job. "All of the jobs that I wanted, I didn't have the requirements for -- often entry-level jobs would require you to have four or five years of experience," said Atkins, who bounced between part-time roles and working in restaurants for years. "It is definitely an outlier," said Matthew Martin, senior US economist at Oxford Economics. "You'd expect that the white collar positions would not be as exposed to cyclical downturns (as other jobs)." Job openings for professional and business services have declined by more than 40 percent since 2021, according to research authored by Martin, with tech sector jobs disproportionately impacted. "Part of that is a slower pace of hiring as they right-size after they hired at very high rates in 2022, but at the same time the sheer volume of decline also points to the impact of AI," he told AFP, signaling the potential of artificial intelligence technology to eliminate some entry-level roles. Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY-Parthenon, said slowing tech sector hiring as companies focus on holding on to their talent "disproportionately" affects recent graduates. The hiring slowdown is also a result of US President Donald Trump's far-reaching policy swings since taking office in January, said Daco. "The experience of extremely high uncertainty when it comes to the administration's trade, tax or other policies has caused many firms to potentially slow down or freeze their hiring." He cautioned, however, against jumping to the conclusion that AI had already begun to eliminate entry-level roles, pointing to a so-far limited uptake of the technology by most sectors. "The reality is that a lot of firms are still in the early stages of adoption of these new technologies, and I think it would be a bit premature to assume that we've reached a level of use... that would have a visible macro impact." The United States is perhaps the most expensive country in the world for a university education, with an average cost of $27,673 per year for an undergraduate degree, according to official data. In 2020, 36.3 percent of US undergraduates took on federal student loans to help meet those spiraling costs, the data shows, with the Education Data Initiative putting average student loan debt for graduating students at $29,550. Even without student loan debt, however, the weakening job market can leave some recent graduates feeling like they are stretched thin. Katie Bremer, 25, graduated from American University with a dual-degree in Environmental Science and Public Health in 2021. It took her more than a year to find a full-time job -- one not in her field -- and even then, she had to supplement her income by babysitting. "I felt like I was constantly working," she told AFP. "It seems overwhelming, looking at the costs, to try and make your salary stretch all the way to cover all the milestones you're supposed to reach in young adulthood." There is little hope on the immediate horizon, with analysts warning that it will likely take some time for the labor market to resolve itself, with part of that adjustment likely seeing students picking different majors. "It's likely to get worse before it gets better," said Martin. Looking at her peers, many of whom are saddled with huge debt and struggled to find work, Bremer says she worries for their collective long-term future. "There have been times where I've thought 'how is my generation going to make this work?'" 'Tipflation:' The growing pitfalls of proper tipping – DW – 07/05/2025
Unwritten rules for tipping differ across the world. But a lot of these rules are being stretched to include more workers, and they aren't afraid to ask for 25%. What are shoppers, diners and package recipients to do? Frank Sinatra was known for giving serving staff crispy $100-bill tips. That was a long time ago when a hundred dollars really meant something. What are the rules for tipping today, and why are customers confused? Many people wouldn't think twice about tipping a waiter in a nice restaurant, the hairdresser, a good bartender or the porter carrying heavy luggage through a busy hotel. These are situations with clear, long-standing norms in many countries. But what about the barista at Starbucks? Or the person taking your order at a fast-food takeaway window? What about a self-service kiosk? Most historians agree that tipping started in medieval Europe with aristocrats handing out gratuities to servants or those who worked their land. By the 19th century, the idea was disappearing in Europe but had arrived in the US. Later, it was re-exported around the world. Today, people tip for any number of reasons: To feel better about themselves, to impress others, to help make up for paltry service-staff pay or because they are asked to. Tipping is primarily driven by motivations to help servers or reward good service, says Michael Lynn, a professor of services marketing at Cornell University in the United States, who studies tipping. Others tip to fulfill a perceived obligation to tip, Lynn told DW. Still others are more self-interested. These people tip to gain or maintain future preferential service or social approval, said Lynn, who is currently writing a book on the subject slated to be called "The Psychology of Tipping: Insights for Service Workers, Managers and Customers." Now new technology is changing how and where tips are expected. In the past, a few dollars were left on the restaurant table or small change was put in the tip jar next to the cash register. Increased card use, apps and touch-screen payment systems have added tipping options — and more confusion for customers. "We have seen an explosion in tip requests, though the tip amounts have not changed drastically," says Ismail Karabas, an associate professor of marketing at Kentucky's Murray State University. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video During the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses moved further away from cash and switched to contactless and online payments, and the point-of-sales companies that provide these digital devices decided to include a tip request. "The tip request is already embedded in the process, so the businesses have to opt out of this option. Many did not, for various reasons, and then we started experiencing tip request inflation across the board," Karabas, who specializes in services marketing, tipping and advertising, told DW. When customers are presented with pre-calculated tips of 15%, 20% or 25% what should they do? Just hit one of the buttons and get it over with, take the time to add in their own amount or leave nothing while looking directly at the cashier? Customers often just choose a pre-set tip option instead of holding up the line. This gives tech designers a lot of influence over tipping. Lynn argues that the question of how the design of interfaces affects tipping is a "hot new area of research." "Increasing the ask size of tip options increases the amount given — even though it can decrease the proportion of people leaving a tips," he said. Designers have an incentive to make tipping the default option and make it harder to opt out of tipping. Anyone who wants to opt out is forced to fumble around or ask how to do it. "More tips mean better income for employees, but also for the tech designers because they charge a fee per transaction that goes through their systems," Karabas added. A survey by YouGov done in May 2023 in the US, UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Spain and Italy showed that the overwhelming majority of restaurant tippers in these countries would tip 5-10% and not much more. The US was an outlier with two-thirds of tippers adding 15% or more. The survey also found that many Americans would leave a tip at a restaurant despite poor or terrible service. Another survey on American tipping culture by the Pew Research Center published in November 2023 looked into tipping and so-called tipflation in the US. The Pew report found that 72% of adults say tipping service workers is indeed expected more often than compared to five years ago. Additionally, only 34% of the adults polled said it is extremely or very easy to know when it is actually appropriate to tip. How to deal with this new tipping culture? First, know where you are. What is the local situation and how are staff paid. Are they earning a minimum wage where a tip is a gratuity on top? Or do they get a much smaller sub-minimum wage and therefore rely on tips to subsidize their take-home pay? In some places in the US, this sub-minimum wage for tipped workers can mean earning just $2.13 (€1.84) an hour. Knowing how much people earn can help when deciding if and how much of a tip to leave. Second, take time to understand the system. Once you know the local norms and wage situation, then you can deal with the actual tipping technology, like calculating what that 25% button really means in dollars and cents. Don't be pressured by the line behind you or the group sitting at the table with you — though admittedly this is probably the hardest part, especially if it is a date. Don't tip out of guilt either. "Guilt tipping leaves a bad impression on customers, makes them irritated about the request, and less likely to return to the same establishment," said Karabas. Finally, as a last resort to avoid confusing or unexpected tip requests, customers should consider paying with cash, says Karabas. That way, everything is in their hands ― even if it is a brand-new $100 bill.

How Donald Trump has profited worldwide from his presidency – DW – 07/05/2025
With Donald Trump's return to the White House, the Trump family's fortune is surging as many question the line between presidential power and private profit. In just six months back in office, Donald Trump's company the Trump Organization has rolled out 12 new international business projects — surpassing the total from Trump's entire first term. And with each new deal, the same question grows louder: Where does President Trump's public duty end, and where does his private empire begin? Back in 2017, Donald Trump publicly called Qatar "a funder of terrorism." Fast-forward to 2025, and the first foreign deal secured by the Trump Organization after Trump's return to the Oval Office is happening in Qatar itself. The project, just outside Doha, will feature a luxury resort and an 18-hole golf course, branded as the Trump International Golf Club & Villas. On paper, the development is being carried out by real estate developers Qatari Diar and the Saudi company Dar Global. But Qatari Diar is no ordinary private company — it was set up by Qatar's sovereign wealth fund and is chaired by a government minister, effectively making it an arm of the Qatari state. Just weeks before President Trump's scheduled visit to Qatar in May 2025, Eric Trump traveled there to help advance the negotiations. The Trump Organization has maintained that the partnership was secured through Dar Global, a Saudi firm, and not directly with Qatari Diar. But that explanation hardly puts the questions to rest, since Dar Global itself has close and well-documented ties to the Saudi royal family. Meanwhile, Trump's May trip brought another issue: The Qatari government offered the United States a customized Boeing 747, a so-called "flying palace" worth around $400 million, as a diplomatic gift. Beyond these business entanglements, the US relationship with Qatar remains complicated. While Qatar has faced criticism for supporting Hamas, it has also positioned itself as a key intermediary in ceasefire negotiations in Gaza. These conflicting roles — friend, funder, and fixer — only deepen the unease about Trump's willingness to entangle presidential diplomacy with private profit. In a series of dubious coincidences, weeks before Trump's Gulf trip in May 2025, the Trump Organization revealed a new partnership with Dar Global. The deal plans to build the Middle East's first Trump International Hotel and Tower in Dubai, marking their fifth regional collaboration. Addressing the US- Saudi Investment Forum during the visit, Trump laid out a regional vision built on "national sovereignty," pointedly rejecting the idea of lecturing Middle Eastern governments about democracy or human rights. The same day, Trump unveiled the largest defense deal in US history — a $142-billion package. This binds Washington even closer to a regime accused of repeated human rights light of this, Trump's closeness with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) is notable. Human rights groups and intelligence agencies have long linked the crown prince to brutal crackdowns and abuses, including the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi — a killing the CIA concluded was personally ordered by MBS. Saudi Arabia has also continued to harass dissidents even on US soil. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia's regional position is also of significance. The kingdom is trying to emerge as a mediator in the Ukraine war and negotiating with Israel in exchange for concessions on Palestine. These contradictions would normally make a US president think twice before rewarding MBS with closer ties. Back in early 2024, five US businessmen with Serbian roots attended a reception at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. By early 2025, Serbian-American ties seemed poised for a fresh chapter. Rod Blagojevich, a longtime Trump ally and former Illinois governor, visited Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Belgrade and used the trip to publicly criticize Kosovo's Prime Minister Albin Kurti, accusing him of overseeing what he called "ethnic cleansing" against Serbs living in Kosovo. That rhetoric carried deep echoes of the region's painful past. In 1999, the United States and NATO bombed Serbia to force its military out of Kosovo in order to stop the violent expulsion of ethnic Albanians. Then, a few weeks into Trump's second term, a $500 million real estate project in Belgrade was back in the news. Trump himself had shown interest in developing the property as far back as 2014, even though local critics saw the replacement of a war memorial with a luxury tower as deeply disrespectful. By May 2025, the obstacles to that plan had been cleared. Under the agreement, the project will feature a 175-room hotel, more than 1,500 luxury apartments, and a new memorial to victims of the NATO bombing. As President Donald Trump prepared for a July 2025 visit to Vietnam, his family business was moving quickly in the country as well. In late May, the Trump Organization announced a partnership with a subsidiary of Vietnam-listed Kinh Bac City Development Holding Corp. to develop a $1.5-billion golf course, resort, and residential estate in Hung Yen province, just south of Hanoi. Unveiling the project, Eric Trump praised Vietnam as "one of the most dynamic and promising markets in the world today." The timing of the deal was striking, coming just as the US and Vietnam were hammering out the details of a high-stakes trade agreement. That trade deal was crucial for Vietnam. At the time, the government was facing threats from Trump of a punishing 46% tariff on Vietnamese goods. In the end, negotiators settled on a 20% tariff. Against this backdrop, the Trump Organization's massive resort deal raises serious concerns about conflicts of interest. Eric Trump put it bluntly last October: His family, he argued, had not received sufficient credit for actually pulling back during the first Trump administration. But a congressional probe released last January showed that Trump-owned businesses received at least $7.8 million from 20 foreign governments during his first term, including the governments of China, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Malaysia. Some independent watchdogs have estimated that the real figures were even higher. Now, with the second-term green light, the Trump Organization is pushing full throttle. Its international expansions, Trump's presidential visits, and personal entanglements continue to blur the line between presidential power and private gain.
