First State-led digital public infra for AI TGDeX set for launch in Telangana on July 2

The Hindu4 days ago
Telangana government, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will be launching Telangana Data Exchange (TGDeX) platform, the first State-led digital public infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI), on Wednesday.
TGDeX is aimed at developing cross-domain AI solutions through collaboration between the State, startups, industry partners and research institutions. The platform will enable access to high quality data and collaborative tools for AI solution builders, the Emerging Technologies Wing of the State IT Department said on the project undertaken by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, with JICA's DXLab providing strategic and technical guidance.
The AI-ready platform will also utilise the Open Data Telangana platform, which is the central repository of all the datasets of the State government that should be in the public domain. TGDeX will leverage Telangana's rich AI ecosystem comprising government departments, private entities, academia and open-source or licensed data providers.
The government's technology ecosystem comprising Telangana AI Mission (T-AIM), T-Hub, MATH (AI/ ML Centre of Excellence of T-Hub), IIT Hyderabad and IIIT Hyderabad will also be associated for achieving TGDeX's target of hosting more than 2,000 AI-ready datasets over the next five years.
Chief Minister A.Revanth Reddy envisions Telangana not just as a leader in Al, but as a model for how technology can empower people, the government said the upcoming launch of TGDeX platform, which is a flagship initiative under the State's AI Strategy and Roadmap launched in September 2024.

Telangana launches TGDex: State's own AI data hub; local models to drive innovation

HYDERABAD: In a decisive move to transform governance and innovation through data, the Telangana IT department has launched the Telangana Data Exchange Platform (TGDex)-a first-of-its-kind initiative enabling academicians, private companies, and organisations to become data publishers. Designed to promote open innovation while safeguarding privacy, the platform allows registered entities to contribute anonymous, non-personal datasets, fostering a rich ecosystem for artificial intelligence (AI) and tech development in the state. Unlike conventional data platforms, TGDex is not a monetisation tool, officials clarified. It instead focuses on creating real-world, Telangana-specific AI use cases, giving local startups and research institutions access to over 500 pre-built algorithmic models and datasets-entirely free of cost. These tools help develop governance solutions, which can also be scaled or sold to the private sector. Officials said TGDex is Telangana's answer to the govt of India's AI Kosh initiative, but with a sharper local focus. It currently hosts a growing repository of datasets, AI models, use cases, and toolkits, making it a one-stop solution for AI-driven innovation rooted in regional relevance. "For instance, AI models trained on data from other countries don't reflect the socio-medical realities of pregnant women in Telangana. Locally sourced datasets are essential for building accurate, reliable applications," said a senior official. To ensure compliance, the platform adheres to the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, the National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy

AP farmers urged to grow profitable agarwood

Vijayawada: Prasada Rao Vaddarapu, a senior IFS officer and director of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Tripura, encouraged farmers in Andhra Pradesh to cultivate agarwood, a high-value crop with significant demand in international markets. Speaking at a media conference here on Thursday, Rao highlighted the potential for agarwood, also known as oudh or gaharu, to generate substantial profits for farmers. Agarwood, a fragrant resinous wood produced by Aquilaria trees, is widely used in perfumes, incense, and traditional medicine. The resin forms when the trees are wounded and infected by fungi, triggering a defense mechanism that produces the valuable oleoresin. This process, known as tylosis, transforms the wood into the dark, aromatic agarwood prized globally, particularly in Gulf countries and Europe, where it symbolises wealth, culture, and hospitality. Rao noted that agarwood has been used for thousands of years in cultural and religious ceremonies and continues to be a key ingredient in incense sticks and fragrance products. However, overharvesting has depleted natural agarwood supplies, making it a rare and expensive commodity. The price of agarwood varies based on its quality, geographical origin, and cultural applications. In Tripura, where agarwood is a prominent crop, the state capital Agartala derives its name from the plant. Rao said that agarwood cultivation could be a game-changer for Andhra Pradesh farmers, as the crop matures in just 15 years—half the time required for Srigandha trees—and can be grown as an intercrop in oil palm plantations. Southern states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka have already begun cultivating agarwood, and Rao urged Andhra Pradesh farmers to follow suit to capitalize on its high market value. During the press conference, Rao was joined by G V Seshagiri, chairman and managing director of Mandira Developers. Both addressed local farmers, explaining the cultivation process and the economic benefits of agarwood farming. Rao's initiative aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices while boosting farmers' incomes through this lucrative crop.
