Orlando Pirates news: Hotto, Saleng, Mofokeng, new coach

Orlando Pirates have yet to name Jose Riveiro's successor, but they are perhaps taking advantage of the offseason to hire the right man for the job; however, not everyone will wait.
According to reports, Rulani Mokwena and Pitso Mosimane are both wanted in Egypt. The latter has been approached by recent Egypt Cup winners Zamalek FC, while the former is reportedly in talks with CAF Champions League victors Pyramids FC.
Veteran wingback Deon Hotto has been rewarded with a contract extension amid weeks of uncertainty. The 30-year-old's contract was set to expire in under two weeks, but Orlando Pirates don't want him going anywhere. The new deal has been confirmed.
Meanwhile, the same can't be said for forgotten man Monnapule Saleng, whose future at the club is as certain as predicting the weather. Both parties appear to be ready for an exit, but substantial interest has yet to be confirmed. The Bloemhof-born winger hasn't featured in the PSL since late November.
Relebohile Mofokeng is another uncertainty; however, in this case, Orlando Pirates definitely want to keep him. Bafana Bafana boss Hugo Broos believes the 20-year-old will move this offseason.
'Okay, I think his parents want the best for him, that's for sure. But there is another guy who wants to win a lot of money also, but that's the problem. But ok, let's hope, maybe I talked too soon about that,
'We'll see. I think in June, Rele will not be a player of Orlando Pirates anymore, but a good choice is very important.'
Meanwhile, the Sea Robbers have secured the future of youngster Yanga Madiba.
'They have already made that decision. For now, it's as good as done, and it's believed to be a three-year contract which would apparently run from July this year until June 2028,' a Soccer Laduma report read.

Photo: Nokwanda Zondi/BackpagePix Lhuan-dre Pretorius became the youngest South African to hit a Test century when he reached the mark on debut on the first day of the first Test against Zimbabwe on Saturday. The solidly-built left-hander, aged 19 years and 93 days, batted fearlessly after arriving at the crease with his team in trouble at 23 for three at Queens Sports Club. Pretorius hit a six off the fourth ball he faced, from left-arm spinner Wellington Masakadza, then smiled broadly at batting partner Wiaan Mulder.

'What did Orlando Pirates see in this guy?': Khanye questions

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has questioned Orlando Pirates' decision to hire Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new head coach. The 46-year-old was announced as the club's new coach earlier this week. The Moroccan replaces Jose Riveiro, who left in May to join Egyptians giants Al Ahly. Since Ouaddou's announcement, Orlando Pirates have announced seven new signings. The team is set to camp in Spain for their pre-season training where they will play several teams. Speaking on iDiski TV , Khanye said the Morrocan coach will find it hard at Pirates given the club's succes. 'Pirates are a team full of surprises. The coach knows where he finds the team currently; he has to fit a size 7 while he is a size 3. Pirates have won five trophies, so it's not going to be filling Riveiro's shoes. He did well, I was a critic of him, but he proved me wrong,' he said. 'What did Pirates see in this guy? I saw his team (Marumo Gallants), maybe it's because he beat Orlando Pirates.' 'I saw him at Gallants, his team was playing with high intensity and they were the fittest team in the league. We know that our players will pull up their socks if they are coached by an international coach,' he said. Orlando Pirates finished second in the Betway Premiership behind Mamelodi Sundowns for the third successive season. Although they won the MTN8, the 2024/25 campaign was not considered a success given how the team promised so match. Justin Snaith chases sixth Durban July winner after Eight On Eighteen drawn promising stall 11

South African champion racehorse trainer Justin Snaith will be in the hunt for his sixth Hollywoodbets Durban July winner. | RACE COAST As South Africa's champion trainer, Justin Snaith, chases his sixth July win, one of his entries Eight On Eighteen, has secured a promising stall eleven draw, something that could significantly influence the horse's chances of claiming victory in this prestigious event. Eight On Eighteen, the Drakenstein-bred son of the late War Front champion, Lancaster Bomber, features prominently in a competitive 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July field of 18 horses for Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday, July 5. The anticipation surrounding the Hollywoodbets Durban July is palpable as the big day on Saturday, July 5, draws nearer. Featured prominently among the top contenders is the Justin Snaith-trained Eight On Eighteen, who has secured a promising stall eleven draw—something that could significantly influence the horse's chances of claiming victory in this prestigious event. However, Snaith's other two entries were not as fortunate in the draw. Okavango will have to navigate from stall thirteen, while Native Ruler faces the challenge of the widest barrier, stall eighteen. This year's Durban July will have female representation in the event. Rainbow Lorikeet, trained by Candice Bass-Robinson, is the sole female runner this year, contrasting with last year's notable absence of female competitors. While Eight On Eighteen's draw may seem advantageous, his handler Richard Fourie, who is eyeing a fourth win in this iconic race, must carefully manage the early stages, particularly in avoiding being boxed in among the wide field. In a surprising twist, veteran jockey Andrew Fortune, at the age of 58, could make history if he guides Okavango to victory, potentially becoming the oldest July-winning jockey, surpassing Piere Strydom's record set in 2016. The draw luck varied among other competitors as well. The powerful duo of Royal Victory and See It Again are grappling with tougher positions; Royal Victory will launch from draw 17 while See It Again faces the challenges of draw 15, which is known to be unfavourable for horses that tend to start slowly. Meanwhile, local owner Grant Cornwall expressed satisfaction with his horse Atticus Finch's excellent draw of four. Rainbow Lorikeet's assistant trainer, Terry Fripp, was overjoyed with the ideal draw of seven—a number he cherishes. Both Glen Kotzen and S'Manga Khumalo celebrated the favourable draw of three for On My Honour. Last year's champion, Oriental Charm, elicited cheers for drawing pole position, yet some suggest this may impose a burden of early energy expenditure. Nevertheless, owner Greg Bortz remains optimistic about the draw's potential, especially with the horse's remarkable gate speed. The stakes are high not just for the horses and their connections but also for viewers who relish the excitement of each race, knowing that positions drawn can often dictate fortune on the track. The only uncertainty that remains is how the dynamics of the draw will play out as they thunder down the last furlong.
