In an interview with food portal BestFoody, the mother revealed that her husband has cancer and has hence semi-retired because of his health.
He was the main chef of Bendemeer Fresh Cockles Fried Kway Teow at 409 AMK Market & Food Centre.
She said that her husband had taught her and their son how to dish up a good plate of char kway teow, but she cannot cook anymore after suffering a stroke.
"After I got a stroke, my hand has no strength," she said. "But my son knows how to fry kway teow — if he didn't know how, we would have to close because my husband is sick and can't cook."
Born with special needs, their son did not finish school and cannot read, and was also exempted from National Service, the mother told BestFoody.
Once, a customer even scolded her son for supposedly giving side glances. The mother had to explain that her son was not staring, and that it was the way he looks around.
Teaching her son the trade took tough love and time.
"I spend the whole day teaching him what to do but he always forgets, that's his nature... but he's much better now," she said, adding that he communicates more with others.
"Initially, the taste was not good, but he slowly improved and now, customers say it's okay and almost the same as what my husband fried," the woman recalled.
"Sometimes he (the son) says he wants to rest but I say no. You say you're tired but so are mum and dad... You have to be independent, mum is still worried and you have to learn it yourself."
"I hope customers can return and try; my son now has about 60 per cent to 70 per cent of my culinary skill. Give some encouragement to young people," the father said in the video.
"If I recover, I'll take over and keep going."

30-year-old NS man dies after NS FIT session at Maju Camp
SINGAPORE: A 30-year-old operationally ready national serviceman died after collapsing outside Maju Camp on Monday (Jun 30). He had earlier completed a National Service Fitness Improvement Training session from 6.50pm to 8pm at Maju Fitness Conditioning Centre. The Defence Ministry (Mindef) said on Tuesday that he was cleared to leave after reporting to the fitness instructors that he felt well, and subsequently booked out of Maju Camp at 8.11pm. Outside the camp, a passer-by witnessed his collapse and called for an ambulance. SCDF was alerted at 8.16pm and the ambulance arrived at 8.25pm. "Resuscitation efforts were administered on-site, and continued enroute during his evacuation to National University Hospital," said Mindef. At around 9pm, the man arrived at the hospital and despite emergency medical interventions, he was pronounced dead at 9.54pm. "As a precaution, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has implemented a safety pause on NS FIT training until Jul 4, 2025 ,to review safety procedures and protocols, and to remind our soldiers on the importance of safety," said MINDEF. "The SAF is rendering support to the family in their time of grief," it added. "We extend our deepest condolences to the family."

Continuing to criminalise drugs 'the right policy': Shanmugam, Singapore News
Continuing to criminalise drugs is "the right policy" for Singapore, said Coordinating Minister for National Security K Shanmugam, who was speaking on the sidelines of a community event in Nee Soon on Saturday (June 28). He told media that the government is looking at "possible outflows" to Singapore with cannabis set to be recriminalised in Thailand. The nexus between drugs, crime and terrorism needs to be looked at, he continued, touching on Singapore's increased security posture amid rising tensions over the Iran-Israel conflict. "We try to maintain our openness and our connectivity, and our business-friendly environment. It is a bit early to say what is going to happen, but we have to be more careful," he added. On June 24, Thailand's Health Ministry issued an order which prohibited the sale of cannabis for recreational use, requiring a doctor's prescription for any retail purchase. Giving some background on the issue, Shanmugam stated that when Thailand decriminalised cannabis, many with more liberal views had asked if Singapore was going to change as well. "I said the Singapore Government decides not based on what other countries do," he said. "We take a hard look, we look at the science, we look at the social impact, and the actual impact and we run the government of Singapore and the policies in the best interests of Singaporeans," he said. "And I am absolutely convinced — the Cabinet is absolutely convinced — that the right policy is to be strict on drugs, and you can see, the people who asked for liberalisation, are shutting their eyes deliberately to what is happening around the world and the immense harm." He noted an incident at a Moscow airport where a man, who reportedly had drugs in his system, picked up an 18-month-old child before flinging him onto the ground. The child is in a critical condition. "You go to the countries which have decriminalised, including Thailand, on the ground and you see the number of shops — you see the young children who are high (on drugs), you look at people being affected. It is obviously a serious position. Why would we want it?" Shanmugam added. Shanmugam, who is also Minister for Home Affairs, added that 85 per cent of Singapore's population supports the tough stand it takes against drugs and the penalties imposed on offenders. "Different countries have their policy. We work in the best interests of Singaporeans, and it was the right policy to keep it criminalised, not soften our stance, and that remains the right policy."'
