The Universal Service Fund (USF) Board of Directors has approved seven major telecommunications projects worth Rs7.49 billion to improve high-speed internet and mobile connectivity for nearly 960,000 people across 347 locations in 10 districts of Pakistan.
The announcement was made during the USF Board's 98th meeting, chaired by Zarar Hasham Khan, Secretary of the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication, held at USF headquarters on Sunday, Radio Pakistan reported.
Among the approved initiatives are two large-scale Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) projects aimed at providing high-speed fixed broadband to approximately 2.8 million people in the Sanghar and Jhang districts. These projects will involve the deployment of 940 kilometres of fibre optic infrastructure, linking 113 towns and union councils.
'The Fund is not only launching new projects but also closely monitoring the timely completion of existing initiatives,' said Zarar Hasham Khan. 'Under the guidance of Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, the USF is reshaping Pakistan's digital ecosystem.'

Khan noted that the USF's ongoing efforts have already connected more than 37 million people across the country. 'These efforts are helping young entrepreneurs and women in remote areas become freelancers and start businesses, thereby boosting Pakistan's IT exports,' he added.
The Board awarded all seven contracts to the lowest bidders following a completed procurement process. The two OFC projects alone are valued at over Rs5.65 billion. The Sanghar segment will require 415 kilometres of fibre, while the Jhang component will cover 525 kilometres.
Five other projects, with a combined value exceeding Rs1.83 billion, will bring 4G mobile broadband services to nearly 1,000 villages and settlements in Attock, Khushab, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Hafizabad, Sheikhupura, Chiniot, Badin, and Abbottabad.
The projects are part of a wider effort to accelerate digital inclusion and stimulate economic activity through improved internet connectivity across Pakistan.

Dar urges India to rethink hostile policies that threaten regional peace, stability

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has urged India to rethink its present hostile and misguided policies that threaten peace and undermine security in South Asia. Speaking at an event held to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the Institute for Strategic Studies (ISSI), the minister said that amid the global turbulence and transformation, 'Pakistan is charting a forward-looking course as a confident and self-assured nation - resolutely safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity and shouldering its obligations as a responsible member of the international community'. He said that Pakistan values the efforts of all friendly countries, including the U.S., KSA, UAE, and Türkiye that resulted in preventing further escalation between India and Pakistan and putting the ceasefire in place. 'Going forward, it is essential to consolidate the ceasefire, institute a reliable crisis management mechanism, and develop confidence building measures that would help stabilise the regional security situation,' the foreign minister said. Dar added that the outcome of the 4-day war with India once again underscored the reality that India can neither intimidate nor coerce Pakistan. 'New Delhi must, therefore, rethink its present hubristic and misguided policies that threaten peace and undermine security in South Asia.' Meanwhile, the minister said that Pakistan also believes that time has come to re-imagine regional cooperation in South Asia and in our extended neighbourhood. 'The negative impulses of dominance and hegemony have long stymied this process and made SAARC dysfunctional. Our region instead needs a positive spirit of solidarity, mutually-beneficial collaboration, and shared prosperity,' he said. On Afghanistan, the deputy PM said that in recent months, Pakistan has purposefully made efforts to reset Pakistan-Afghanistan relations on a positive trajectory. He said both the countries have agreed to upgrade the diplomatic representation to Ambassadorial level and extend CPEC to Afghanistan. 'If the Interim Afghan Government works with complete sincerity and wholeheartedly, the fruits of our economic cooperation, efforts for regional integration, and connectivity would be enormous. Not only the people of Afghanistan will benefit tremendously but also the dividends of shared prosperity would extend to Central Asia and beyond.' The ISSI was founded in1973 and has evolved into one of Pakistan's foremost strategic think-tanks. It is known for generating quality research, promoting thought leadership, and fostering inclusive dialogue among diverse stakeholders.

Diplomatic change sweeps capital

Pakistan is witnessing a notable shift in its diplomatic landscape as several foreign envoys prepare to depart, having completed their tenures or exited due to political changes back home. The wave of departures includes seasoned ambassadors, career diplomats, and a few whose exits were unexpected. Among the most distinguished is Hungarian Ambassador Bela Fazekas, who holds a rare place in diplomatic history for serving two separate terms in Pakistan. First posted in 2007, Fazekas returned years later for a second stint — an unusual reappointment in international diplomacy. His familiarity with Pakistan's political and cultural fabric enabled him to deepen bilateral ties in trade, education, and cultural exchange. Fazekas joins a select group of diplomats to have served twice in the same country. A similar precedent was set by Aybek Osmanov, former Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Pakistan, who also held the position in two separate terms. Such cases remain rare, as most ambassadors are rotated after completing a single tenure. The list of outgoing diplomats also includes: Austria's Ambassador Andrea Wicke, who is retiring from the foreign service after a career marked by strengthened Austria-Pakistan cooperation, especially in economic and cultural spheres. Iraq's Ambassador Hamid Abbas Lafta, who has already departed after concluding his term. A new Iraqi envoy is expected soon. South Korea's Ambassador, due to leave in the coming weeks, oversaw notable advances in technology partnerships, automotive collaboration, and skilled labour exchanges. EU Ambassador Riina Kionka, who led the European Union delegation with a strong focus on trade, governance, and human rights. Denmark's Ambassador Jakob Linulf, who earned recognition for his proactive stance on development cooperation and climate resilience. In some cases, ambassadorial exits appear linked to political shifts in their home countries: Kyrgyzstan's Ambassador left abruptly, with no official successor named yet.
