All 6 workers from Jkhand kidnapped in Tamil Nadu rescued: Police

News183 days ago
Ranchi/Chennai, Jul 22 (PTI) All six workers from Jharkhand's Jamtara, who were allegedly kidnapped in Tamil Nadu, were rescued in the southern state, a police officer said on Tuesday.
The Tamil Nadu Police said four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, and hunt is on to trace two more suspects who were involved in 'extorting" Rs 1.25 lakh from the kin of the unsuspecting workers.
The development comes a day after Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari expressed apprehension that there was life threat to all of them.
'The Tamil Nadu Police contacted us. Based on our inputs, they rescued all six workers. However, criminals, who are allegedly involved in the incident, have been absconding as per information we have so far," Jamtara SP Rajkumar Mehta told PTI.
All six workers went to Tamil Nadu to earn their livelihood, he said, adding that their age and other details would be known once they arrive in Jamtara.
The rescued workers are currently in Tamil Nadu, and arrangements are being made to bring them back to Jharkhand, another police officer said.
Meanwhile, a senior police officer in Tamil Nadu's Namakkal district told PTI that some brokers (who appear to have facilitated jobs) took the workers in a car and 'extorted" money from their relatives.
'They obtained Rs 90,000 and Rs 35,000 through UPI transactions from their kin and later left the workers and fled," he said.
Four brokers were arrested on July 21, and efforts were on to nab two others, he said.
A statement from the Jharkhand Police said four of the accused, all hailing from Komarapalayam, were arrested while a manhunt was on to nab two others and the process is on to identify another unidentified accused.
'Intensive investigation of the case is underway besides joint action for the arrest of the three absconding accused," it said, adding, DGP (Jharkhand) Anurag Gupta was in touch with his counterpart in Tamil Nadu.
Ansari had on Monday urged the Tamil Nadu DGP and chief secretary to immediately intervene and rescue the six workers.
'Six children from my assembly constituency, Jamtara (Narayanpur block), have been kidnapped in Tamil Nadu. The kidnappers are continuously demanding ransom. The frightened family has also transferred Rs 30,000," Ansari had said in a post on X.
He also shared names of the six Jamtara natives and transaction details. PTI NAM/SAN BDC JSP VGN RBT

7 kids die, 21 injured as classroom roof collapses in Jhalawar village

Kota/Jaipur: Seven children were killed and at least 21 injured when a classroom ceiling collapsed on them at Piplodi Govt Upper Primary School in Jhalawar district Friday morning, moments after a teacher who had been alerted to "falling brick pieces" allegedly asked them to "sit quietly". Ten of the injured students were hospitalised in a critical condition, officials said. Principal Meena Garg and four teachers were suspended for alleged negligence pending a high-level inquiry, while state school education minister Madan Dilawar owned moral responsibility for the 7.40am tragedy. "I won't engage in a blame game. Being the education minister, I am responsible for this…We will conduct a fair investigation and strict action will be taken against those found guilty. We allocated funds for the maintenance of 2,000 dilapidated govt schools in phases," Dilawar said. Late night, minister Dilawar announced that families of the deceased children will be given Rs 10 lakh each and one family member each will be given a contractual govt job. He also announced that classrooms in the new school building that would be built at the same place will be named after the deceased children. Outrage over the ceiling collapse triggered violence in Jhalawar in the evening, prompting police to baton charge groups of protesters blocking roads and pelting them with stones at Guradi Circle and outside SRG Hospital. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The victims, between 10 and 15, were among 31 students of different classes inside the classroom when cracks in the ceiling suspected to have been caused by rainwater seepage purportedly opened up before their eyes. "We told sir that pieces of the ceiling were falling on us but he ignored it," said a teary-eyed girl. Within seconds, screams of children drowned in the ominous noise of brick and mortar coming down in a heap. Villagers who had sprinted towards the school compound on seeing clouds of dust spiralling into the air were the first rescuers, sources said. Witnesses said parents frantically searched for their children in the mounds of debris. "At least 13 kids were pulled out within 20 minutes of the ceiling collapse," said village sarpanch Ram Prasad Lodha, who drove his payloader to the site to assist in the rescue. Lodha alleged that an ambulance reached the village 45 minutes after being informed of the accident. Most of the injured students were taken to hospital on motorcycles, he said. While the education minister's office said 21 students were injured, Jhalawar district education officer Narso Meena's official report mentions injuries to 24 people. Preliminary reports suggested the students had been made to wait in their classrooms instead of going to the ground for morning prayers, as usual, because it was raining at the time. The classroom's rear wall collapsed first, causing the stone-slab roof to fall on the students. The classroom whose ceiling collapsed was one of two built in 1994 with funds from the gram panchayat. "Funds were released recently for repairs. We aren't sure if the rooms built by the gram panchayat were renovated or not," said an official. Collector Ajay Singh Rathore said the district administration recently instructed the education department to draw up a list of dilapidated school buildings. Piplodi Govt Upper Primary School, whose building is three decades old, didn't figure in that list, he said. Education secretary Krishna Kunal said the school's roof had been repaired in 2023. "If a little caution were exercised, such a tragedy wouldn't have occurred. We are appealing not only to teachers but also to parents and village representatives that children should not be sent to schools with dilapidated rooms." The district administration has already razed other rundown portions of the school to avoid another potential disaster during the monsoon. Jhalawar adjoins Kota district, which school education minister Dilawar represents in the assembly. Congress demanded Dilawar's resignation, saying the tragedy occurred in the minister's backyard and on his watch. People took to social media to question the accountability of ex-CM Vasundhara Raje and her parliamentarian son Dushyant Singh also, as the family has been representing Jhalawar for nearly four decades.

Param Bir gets CBI clean chit in third MVA-era case, 2 pending

Mumbai: CBI has filed a chargesheet against Thane Anti-Extortion Cell cops, including former senior inspector Pradeep Sharma, late ACP N T Kadam and inspector Rajkumar Kothmire, and private individuals for allegedly extorting Rs 1 crore from bookie and businessman Ketan Tanna by registering a false case against him in 2018. However, it found no evidence against the then Thane police chief Param Bir Singh, DCP Deepak Deoraj, businessman Bimal Aggarwal, gangster Ravi Pujari, and others initially named in the FIR. This was one of the 5 cases involving Singh— he later headed Mumbai police— transferred to CBI on an SC order. They were registered when MVA was in govt. He has already been given clean chit by CBI in 2 other cases, while 2 others are pending. Cops from Thane Anti-Extortion Cell including, former senior inspector (now retired) Pradeep Sharma, have been chargesheeted by the CBI for allegedly extorting Rs 1 crore from bookie and businessman Ketan Tanna. The CBI has alleged that the accused conspired to extort huge sums of money from Tanna and others by falsely implicating them in a false case. The chargesheet was filed earlier this month before the chief judicial magistrate court in Thane. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! Bookies Sonu Jalan and Tanna's allegations are that the accused police officers in 2018 framed them in a false case and extorted Rs 5 crore from them and other bookies. Tanna alleged that one Ritesh Shah, with whom he had a financial dispute, filed a false complaint alleging that Tanna took help from gangster Ravi Pujari in recovering betting money from him. Shah alleged that Tanna and his aide kidnapped him and forced him to hand over power of attorney for a flat. Following this, Thane police arrested Jalan, Ketan Tanna, and a few others and invoked MCOCA. Shah alleged that he was kidnapped on Jan 22, 2018, but when Tanna produced travel documents to show he was in Dubai on that particular day, Shah changed his statement to say he was kidnapped on Jan 17. "This shows that Shah willingly changed his statement to support the allegation against Tanna," says the chargesheet. The CBI has also raised questions over the decision to invoke the stringent act of MCOCA against Tanna. "A proposal for invoking MCOCA was initiated on June 3, 2018, and the approval was received the very next day. Shah claimed that he received threat calls from Pujari, but the recording was not available at the time of invoking MCOCA." The chargesheet also names suspended constables Suresh More, Sunil Desai, and private individuals including Vikas Dahabde, Ritesh Shah, and Sanjay Punamiya. The chargesheet says sanction from the Govt of Maharashtra is awaited.

Panel for dowry law tweak; relief for givers, stricter action on takers

Thiruvananthapuram: In a landmark legal shift aimed at encouraging victims to report dowry-related abuse, the Kerala Law Reforms Commission has submitted a draft amendment to the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, proposing to decriminalise the act of giving dowry. The amendment, now being considered by the social justice department, can radically change how dowry crimes are prosecuted in the state. The draft bill, titled The Dowry Prohibition (Kerala Amendment) Bill, 2025, accessed by TOI, comes in the wake of repeated cases of dowry-linked violence and deaths, where the existing legal framework often discourages survivors or their families from lodging complaints. As the law currently stands, both giving and receiving dowry are treated as criminal offences. This has created a legal paradox of rendering victims or their families—who are often coerced into giving dowry—liable for prosecution if they speak out. "The fear of criminal liability prevents brides or their families from coming forward," the bill observes in its explanatory note. "It is unrealistic to expect victims to voluntarily file complaints under a law that implicates them for giving dowry," it says. The bill proposes a fundamental change to Section 2 of the existing Act by redefining dowry as property or valuable security taken or demanded by the bridegroom or his relatives—either directly or indirectly—from the bride or her family. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo This shifts the legal burden to those taking dowry. The commission argues that the step is critical to break the culture of silence that allows dowry abuse to thrive unchecked. It cites numerous instances of women being locked in rooms, starved, beaten or even driven to suicide over dowry demands. The draft bill also proposes stronger deterrence by enhancing the punishment for those who demand or receive dowry. Under the proposed Section 3, offenders could face imprisonment of not less than three years, extendable to seven years, along with a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh or the full value of the dowry taken, whichever is higher. Courts could also order that the recovered fine be paid as compensation to the victim or her legal heirs. To ensure that genuine, non-demanded gifts remain protected, the amendment retains an exception for customary presents received by the bridegroom, provided these are properly recorded in accordance with the rules under the Act. In a significant addition, it introduces a new Section 4A to penalise post-marriage cruelty related to dowry. If a husband, with or without support from others, tortures his wife or refuses to maintain her due to non-payment of dowry, he could face imprisonment of up to two years and a fine of Rs 25,000. It also says the new section will operate in addition to any other laws currently in force. The bill also proposes to extend the time limit within which dowry must be returned at the instance of courts from three months to one year, besides raising the fine for demanding dowry from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000. The govt is expected to hold stakeholder consultations before tabling the bill in the upcoming assembly session.
