Baby dies after just nine days as mum's womb 'divides into two halves'

Daily Record28-04-2025
A mother has been left heartbroken after her baby died at just nine days old after her womb was "divided in two" due to a rare condition. Charlie Hughes delivered Bryn at 27-weeks after her womb was split by a wall of muscle due to a condition known as 'septate uterus'. This caused complications which led to the 33-year-old undergoing a C-section. Bryn was born on April 27 2024 and his health began to improve until sepsis hit - and Charlie and her husband, Gareth, tragically had to say goodbye to their little boy after just nine days. Charlie, who works as an obstetrics and gynaecology doctor in Coventry, ran the London Marathon in honour of her son. She told the Mirror: "We promised Bryn on the night he died that we would carry on with all of life's adventures, and that we'd take him with us. The London Marathon is one of those adventures. He'll be with me every step of the way." Charlie ran the Marathon for pregnancy research charity Tommy's alongside her best friend Emily - and the pair have already raised over £6,000. She said: "I want people to know Bryn's name. I hope that by telling his story, it raises awareness of preterm birth and neonatal loss. "I also want more people to know about the amazing work Tommy's does and the difference it's making. They're at the cutting edge of preterm birth research. "Unfortunately there was nothing more that could be done for Bryn, but I do believe we're moving towards a place where things will be better." Charlie discovered early in her pregnancy that her womb was split into two halves by a wall of muscle, increasing her risk of premature birth. She received care from Professor Siobhan Quenby at the preterm prevention clinic at UHCW. Bryn was born via emergency Caesarean section at 27 weeks and three days after Charlie's waters broke and further complications arose. He received excellent care in the neonatal unit at UHCW, and despite a rocky start, his condition began to improve, giving his parents hope that he would soon be going home. However, Bryn tragically developed sepsis, which ultimately led to his passing at just nine days old. Charlie recalled: "We knew on the night he died that he wasn't going to make it. We were able to be with him, and our families got to meet him too." Charlie and her partner will always treasure the brief time they had with Bryn, saying: "We will always cherish those nine precious days with Bryn as his mum and dad." This experience has sparked a deep passion in Charlie to work towards saving the lives of babies like Bryn. She expressed her aspirations: "I'm extremely passionate about it. I'm hoping to do more myself in preterm birth research that's where I'm hoping my career will lead."

Constant UTI suffers 'haven't had one' since taking 'life-changing' supplement

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common ailment, particularly among women. The constant need to urinate and the pain associated with it can significantly disrupt daily routines and affect overall wellbeing. This often results in repeated antibiotic treatments and ongoing frustration. UTIs can impact the bladder, urethra or kidneys, presenting symptoms such as painful urination, blood in the urine, and abdominal or back pain. These infections typically occur when bacteria from faeces enter the urinary tract. While hydration, good hygiene and cranberry supplements are often recommended, many are seeking solutions that work in harmony with the body's natural microbiome. Now, customers can purchase the pH Hero Vaginal Health Support 30 capsules from Dr Vegan on a monthly subscription for £24.64, reduced from £28.99. Additionally, they can receive a further 25% off their first order using the code PH25, reports the Mirror. According to the brand, pH Hero is an award-winning blend of scientifically studied live bacteria and botanicals designed to support urinary tract health. It aids in protecting against discomfort and supports the vaginal microbiome. The formula includes five strains of live cultures providing 20bn CFU (colony forming units), prebiotics, Cranberry, Sea Buckthorn and Nettle for effective pH Hero supplement boasts a blend of ingredients with multiple health benefits, including Sea Buckthorn, which thrives in tough coastal environments. The brand highlights that Sea Buckthorn 'contributes to the mucosal function of the vagina, providing support in the case of vaginal dryness, and maintaining healthy skin from within.' Nettle is included for its natural detoxifying effects and is recognised for aiding urinary tract health. Parsley is another key component, promoting kidney function and healthy urinary flow, beneficial for those seeking to keep their excretory system in check. Cranberry, commonly used by individuals managing recurrent UTIs, offers antioxidant properties to fight oxidative stress. The product's composition is rounded off with Vitamin B6, essential for regulating hormonal activity and supporting normal cysteine synthesis, crucial for the balance of the urinary and vaginal microbiomes. For customers looking for other options, Time Health's Intimate Flora for Women retails at £21.99 and includes targeted probiotic strains along with cranberry and d-mannose for urinary tract support. Alternatively, Natures Aid Cranberry 500mg available for £8.22 at Health Store Express is reputed to aid UTIs, detoxification, and blood toxin removal. The pH Hero has garnered high praise from its users, with Leslie sharing her personal experience: "pH hero has totally changed my life. I am 58 with the bladder of an 18 year old. I was having so many problems and constantly wanting the toilet before I found pH Hero. Now I don't wake in the night and I don't need the loo constantly. I adore this product I have been on it now a year and wont be without it again." Melinda also expressed her satisfaction, stating: "PH Hero has been the very first product in over 20 years that keeps UTIs at bay. If, like me, you suffer and rely on antibiotics and cranberry, take PH Hero. I haven't had a UTI since taking them,". However, not all feedback has been positive, as some customers have voiced their concerns on Trustpilot. One customer remarked: "Plenty of guidance and feed requested from customers, but still haven't received the product yet! I ordered and paid on 3rd May and it still hasn't arrived." Another shopper, Alex, shared a more favourable review: "This has been a total game-changer for me. I was crippled with constant UTI's for years, nothing worked and over a few weeks they stopped and nothing since." Those interested can purchase pH Hero from Dr Vegan.

'I swapped energy drinks for new wellness trend and festivals won't be the same again'

Summer is packed with festivals, and there's no worse feeling than being dehydrated and tired - but this electrolyte magic solution will keep you jumping all day and night The festival that you've been waiting for all year is finally days away. You're about to see your favourite artists, and your outfits are prepared for each day. But if there's one thing people don't usually look forward to, it's the long hours of standing and the scorching heat. ‌ Summer means holidays, festivals and concerts - and staying hydrated is the number one method to survive a long day standing and walking around. One thing that I've recently discovered is the importance of electrolytes, and they've become a lifesaver. Touted as a method of hydration during sports days, or even as a big helper for a good night's sleep - electrolytes have become a best friend to all party-goers. ‌ ‌ Indeed, it does keep you hydrated through the craze, but it also prevents you from giving up on seeing your favourite artist after spending hundreds of pounds for a ticket. For a boost of energy, most people rely on energy drinks or coffee, which have high levels of caffeine. However, in the hot summer weather, these beverages leave us dehydrated and in need to consume more. The magic of electrolytes During my recent trip to Wireless Festival, on both Friday and Saturday nights, I mixed my bottle of water with Liquid I.V. 's latest electrolyte mix. After hearing people raving about its magic, I just had to give it a go. ‌ Electrolytes are minerals that provide basic body functions. They play a crucial role in muscle function and in maintaining hydration, which is what they're most known for. The main electrolytes are potassium, sodium, magnesium, chloride, calcium, phosphate and bicarbonates. Adrian O'Brien, heath and wellbeing general manager Europe at Unilever, told the Mirror: 'Festivals are all about having fun, being active and enjoying every moment, but long days in the sun, dancing and travelling can quickly leave you feeling drained.' During the hours I stood and walked around the festival in the temperatures reaching 30 degrees, I didn't notice any signs of fatigue. It was completely the opposite. I couldn't stay still. I had the best time ever, and I couldn't believe that a sachet of flavoured electrolytes mixed with a bottle of water could have such an impact. ‌ 'It's ideal before heading out for the day, during long hours on your feet, or after a big night when you need a boost. Whether you're dancing in a field, heading to a workout, or just trying to rehydrate after a sunny day out, it helps you bounce back and feel your best,' Alexa Abdelaziz, PHD, nutrition science manager, added. To get the most out of your electrolytes at a festival, it's best to sip them regularly throughout the day - especially if you're going to be spending a lot of time in the sun. It's also best to pair it with a 500ml bottle of water, ditching any other sugary drinks. To test this further, I've been taking it on days where I knew I needed to be energised. For example, my recent visit to Billie Eilish's concert at the O2 Arena in London. While partying in a sun-drenched field isn't the same as running a marathon or a two-hour intense workout, the importance of keeping ourselves hydrated still applies. However, it's also important to note that although electrolytes are great and have many benefits, moderation is key. Always stick to the recommended serving sizes. According to Liquid I.V.'s product description, it's one stick per day. By staying hydrated with electrolytes, I was able to have the best time ever without feeling tired out. And let me tell you, I wish I knew about it sooner. So next time you head out to a summer event, or any event, don't forget to bring your sunglasses and electrolytes.

Police investigating Hulk Hogan's death after 911 call released

The WWE star collapsed at his home in Florida. A medical investigation into the death of wrestling legend Hulk Hogan has been launched by police in Florida. The star, real name Terry Bollea, died in a Florida hospital on Thursday morning after paramedics rushed to his home following a 911 call. ‌ The medical team spent more than an hour battling to save his life - and now police have confirmed no foul play is suspected but they will be reviewing what happened, calling it a "standard" procedure, according to the Mirror. ‌ During a press conference on Thursday, Major Nate Burnside of the Clearwater Police Department said: "The Clearwater Police Department is conducting a medical investigation, which is standard in these types of cases. There are no signs of foul play or suspicious activity related to this call for service at this time." ‌ He also added more details about the emergency call, saying: "Just before 10 AM, Clearwater Police Department responded to a house in the 1000 block of El Dorado Avenue for a medical related call. "It was discovered at that time that Terry Bollea, also known as Hulk Hogan, was experiencing a serious medical related issue. Personnel provided medical treatment at that time and transported Mr. Bollea to Morton Plant Hospital, where he died at 11:17 AM." ‌ Shortly after the tragedy, WWE released a statement announcing the news, reading: "WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. "One of pop culture's most recognisable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan's family, friends, and fans." ‌ In the 911 call, which was obtained by TMZ shortly after news of Hogan's death, operators could be heard dispatching paramedics to the scene as they raced to attend the star. Hogan had been reported to be in ill health since having an adverse reaction to cervical surgery on his neck in June. His former manager and long-time friend Jimmy Hart had revealed the wrestling star was unable to talk and he had been moved from his bed at Morton Plant to his home for his recuperation. ‌ In February 2023, Hogan was pictured walking with a cane and a month earlier, fellow wrestler Kurt Angle, 55, said the WWE veteran had lost all feeling in his legs after surgery. Speaking on The Kurt Angle Show, Kurt said: 'He had the nerves cut from his lower body. He can't feel his lower body. So (he) uses his cane to walk around.' ‌ He added: 'I thought he was using the cane because he had pain in his back. He doesn't have any pain. He has nothing at all. He can't feel anything.' Hogan's representative denied the claim at the time, telling Entertainment Tonight: 'Everything is OK with him. Hulk is someone with a lot of humour.' Hogan had been in and out of hospital in the months before his death. In June, he underwent a four-level Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion – a complex neck surgery. ‌ His wife, 45-year-old Sky Daily, told fans on Instagram at the time he was recovering from the 'intense surgery with a long and layered healing process'. Sky said the operation had also affected his vocal cords and required breathing and feeding tubes. Sky added: 'He's healing and we're taking it one day at a time with love, strength, and patience." ‌ Rumours had spread on social media suggesting Hogan was in a coma, which Daily denied. 'No, he's definitely not in a coma!' she said, according to PennLive. She added: 'His heart is strong, and there was never any lack of oxygen or brain damage.' Two days before Hulk's death, his longtime manager, 81-year-old Jimmy, wrote on X: 'Hulk is doing great, doing phenomenal!' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
