Northern Ont. man admits to stabbing woman to death after night of drinking, drugs

Charity (Bittern) Mainville-Moses, 39, was stabbed to death by Dallas Malley in Marathon, Ont., on July 15, 2023. (Kerry Funeral Home) A northern Ontario man in his early 20s has admitted to stabbing a woman, 39, to death in Marathon on July 15, 2023, following a night of drinking and drugs. Dallas Malley was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Charity (Bittern) Mainville-Moses, but he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in a Thunder Bay courtroom Thursday morning. The plea bargain means Malley will avoid a trial despite being found minutes after the stabbing with a knife covered in Mainville-Moses' blood. Charity (Bittern) Mainville-Moses, 39, was stabbed to death by Dallas Malley Charity (Bittern) Mainville-Moses, 39, was stabbed to death by Dallas Malley in Marathon, Ont., on July 15, 2023. (Kerry Funeral Home) During the court proceedings, he was in the prisoner's box, behind glass, with short, brown hair and wearing a T-shirt and glasses. An agreed statement of facts was read into the record by the Crown and agreed to by the defendant. What happened that night The court heard the night before the fatal stabbing, Malley was at his apartment at 4 Whitman Ct. with his downstairs neighbour and the victim, drinking and doing cocaine and methamphetamines throughout the evening. He didn't know Mainville-Moses and had only met her that day. Apartment at 4 Whitman Ct., Marathon, Ont. Apartment at 4 Whitman Ct., Marathon, Ont., where Dallas Malley lived at the time of the 2023 fatal stabbing. August 2024 (Google) Around midnight, Malley went to a convenience store and withdrew $60 for his neighbour to buy him more cocaine. Malley returned to his neighbour's apartment, but what happened there between 12:25 and 1:27 a.m. is unknown. When the neighbour returned, his apartment was in 'disarray' and not like he had left it just before midnight. Malley told police he had an altercation with the victim when she pushed him on the stairs when he was trying to return to his upstairs apartment, resulting in an elbow injury. Shortly after, he was heading to his mother's house to get something to eat because he knew she wasn't home when Mainville-Moses came up behind him and charged. He used a knife called a 'Texas toothpick' to stab her, which he admitted to being an unreasonable response to the situation. Audio of the scuffle was recorded on video by a woman living nearby, and in it, the court heard the victim was screaming for help. The witness called 911 and Malley was arrested within minutes. When police approached, he was heard saying, 'Oh shit,' before dropping the knife. Mainville-Moses was taken to local hospital where she succumbed to a stab wound to the chest at 3:23 a.m. Crown, defence agree on sentencing 'Second-degree murder involves intent to kill or cause serious harm, but without premeditation,' Kruse Law Criminal & DUI Lawyers said on its website. 'In other words, if you kill someone in the heat of passion during an argument, you could be convicted of second-degree murder. This contrasts with manslaughter, where there is no intent to kill.' In a joint position, the Crown and defence are asking the judge for a prison sentence of eight years less credit for time served in presentencing custody. The sentence falls in the upper range of the average manslaughter sentence in Canada, which is six to eight years of incarceration. 'There is no sentence you can impose that will bring back the victim in this matter,' defence attorney Sebastian George Joseph said in his sentencing submission. 'That will heal the hurt the family is experiencing.' Credit for time already served Malley has already been in jail for 713 days, just under two years. He will get credit deducted at time and half, or 1,070 days, from the eight years. This means if the judge agrees with the sentencing recommendation, he will serve another 1,850 days, or just more than five more years, in prison. Family devastated Several family members submitted victim impact statements. Two were read in person and the others were read by the Crown. The statements detail the impact the woman's death has had on her family. 'We might never recover from this tragedy,' her cousin said. 'I fear for the safety of my family.' Another cousin said they will always wonder why it happened. The family's grief was palpable as wails could be heard from the gallery during the reading of the victim's impact statements and at one point paused the proceedings. During the quick adjournment, three court officers stood in front of the convicted man inside the prisoner's box. Convicted man showed remorse The last victim impact statement was read by the victim's mother who sang and drummed a song about her daughter. Given the opportunity to speak in court, Malley expressed remorse. 'I am very sorry for what happened and I feel really bad,' he said after sniffling and wiping his face on his shirt sleeve. 'I wish I could go back and change what I did.' The hearing adjourned for lunch and will return at 2 p.m.

Sifan Hassan to run Sydney Marathon, unlikely for World Championships

Sifan Hassan plans to run the Sydney Marathon on Aug. 31. Her management team says that means she does not plan to compete at the World Track and Field Championships in Tokyo from Sept. 13-21. Hassan, the Olympic marathon gold medalist, will headline the women's field for Sydney's debut as a World Marathon Major race. Advertisement 'Australia is such a strong athletics nation, and a great marathon needs passionate and loud fans, so I'm excited," Hassan said in a press release. "I'm also honored to be part of the Sydney Marathon's first year as a Major.' At the Paris Olympics, Hassan earned bronze medals in the 5000m (Aug. 5) and the 10,000m (Aug. 9) before winning the marathon on Aug. 11. This summer, she does not plan to attempt the reverse in a tight window. Track races at worlds in Tokyo are two weeks after the Sydney Marathon. "Participation in Australia means that Sifan will not participate in the World Championships in Tokyo in principle," Hassan's management team said. "This is not 100 percent certain, because Sifan can always decide differently." Advertisement It would be the first time Hassan misses the biennial worlds since 2013, when the Dutchwoman was at the start of what has become a groundbreaking career. At the Tokyo Olympics, Hassan won 5000m and 10,000m gold and 1500m bronze. In Paris, Hassan became the first person to run the 5000m, 10,000m and marathon at one Olympics in 40 years. She became the second person ever to win a medal in the three longest races at one Olympics after Czech Emil Zátopek, who won all three in 1952. Hassan has raced once since the Paris Games — taking third in the London Marathon on April 27. US Olympic Trial: Track & Field (Marathon) 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying time standards announced Marathon trials qualifying times were set with a goal of about 200 athletes each in the men's and women's fields.

Police did not name the driver but say they suspended his licence for 30 days and impounded the car for 14 days. He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Nipigon on Aug. 11. The OPP is reminding the public to drive safely and report impaired, aggressive, or careless driving by calling 911 in emergencies.

‘Marathon' Will Not Be Canceled, It Will Not Pivot

Marathon In the wake of Bungie's announcement that Marathon will be delayed indefinitely, pushed out of its September 23, 2025 release date, a common refrain began that either the game should just be canceled at this point, or it needs to significantly change direction. I'm here to say that neither will happen. Sony will not cancel Marathon, nor will it pivot to some dramatically different type of game. It wil also not abandon its core concepts within the extraction genre it's laid forth. It's too late for Marathon to be cancelled. This is not some previously announced game that has had no updates in years. This is a game that after 5+ years of work did a huge gameplay reveal followed by an extremely public Closed Alpha ahead of a release date that was supposed to be three months from today, almost exactly. Should Marathon have been canceled? That's a different question, but the other consideration here is that Sony paid $3.6 billion for Bungie with the idea that it would get a big new live service IP out in the form of Marathon. So acquiring the company, looking at Marathon, and cutting it would have been a wild decision in that context. Marathon FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder I may eat my words, but in no way do I think Marathon will be cancelled. The indefinite delay will hopefully have an endpoint as Bungie says they will announce the new release date this fall, which logic would dictate would be in early 2026 so it can squeeze out in Sony's 2025 fiscal year as they just promised literally days ago. So fine, Marathon is coming out. But it needs to change significantly right, if not go in a completely new direction? This will also not happen. Again, it's too late. The larger structure of the game is set in stone at this point. Ideas like adding PvE to the game like a campaign or separate mode are not going to happen by launch. Bungie says it will work on enemy AI and how those encounters play out on the map and increase lore to elevate the story, but that's not the same thing. You cannot just add things of a larger scale even with what seems like a long delay. For this kind of game, you're simply never going to see something like a PvE campaign added at all. Even concepts within Marathon itself will not change. Another request is 'just switch to customizable characters' as opposed to set classes of heroes, as that's somewhat antithetical to the extraction genre. Bungie thinks it makes the game stand out, but players mostly view it as a negative. Marathon Bungie already has six heroes in the bag for launch. It did not say that it would add more as a result of this delay, but given that this was mapped out as a live game, many are no doubt in production. There will be endless balancing between classes, but this pivot to classes was made two years ago when Valorant's Joe Ziegler took over, and it is not pivoting back now. It will have to work within that system and make players accept and enjoy it. There are requests that can and will be added. Proximity chat is happening. A solos mode was not explicitly confirmed, but it seems likely. Maybe heroes will get cooler and lore will get more interest and maps more dynamic. But big, sweeping changes are simply not on the table during this delay period, however long it may be. But no, it's not going to get canceled either. Definitely not a sprint finish: Bungie's Marathon reboot is delayed indefinitely

Definitely not a sprint finish: Bungie's Marathon reboot is delayed indefinitely 'We need more time to craft Marathon into the game that truly reflects your passion,' said Bungie Skip 1 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Turn on Javascript to see all the available pictures. Just in case there was anybody left who hadn't noticed yet: videogame development in 2025 is quite a tricky business. Halo creator Bungie Inc. will probably be the first to tell you that, having just announced that the studio's upcoming PvP shooter Marathon has been delayed indefinitely, following what the statement rather diplomatically calls 'passionate' feedback from the alpha playtesters. 'Thank you not only for your passionate feedback around the Marathon reveal and Alpha playtest,' begins the official statement, 'but also for your patience while we took the time to listen closely and chart our next steps.' Advertisement - Page continues below Marathon was due to release on 23 September this year, but the statement says that's no longer happening. There's no new release date, but there is a sizeable list of new features and improvements Bungie intends to implement before resurfacing. In an incredible case of nominative determinism, it's already been a long and arduous journey for the project, which was announced back in 2023 and has subsequently had to face backlash for the PvP-only direction of the reboot (the original 1994 game was a singleplayer sci-fi corridor shooter) while implementing leadership changes following legal issues. It's always good to see studios taking the extra time to ensure a decent final product. However, if you were wondering if there's any place for auteurs whose creative vision is the alpha and omega of a game development project in 2025, the answer's… um, this. 'We're using this time to empower the team to create the intense, high-stakes experience that a title like Marathon is built around. This means deepening the relationship between the developers and the game's most important voices: our players.'
