AAP candidate Gopal Italia, former president of the party in Gujarat, defeated his nearest rival, BJP's Kirit Patel in Visavadar by a margin of 17,554 votes, according to the Election Commission of India (EC). The BJP could not win the seat since 2007 despite its near-total dominance in the State.
However, the party managed to retain Kadi, which is a reserved constituency. BJP's Rajendra Chavda won by a margin of 39,452 votes over Congress' Ramesh Chavda.
The bye-election in Kadi was necessitated due to the death of BJP MLA Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki in February; Visavadar went to bypolls as its MLA Bhayani Bhupendrabhai Gandubhai resigned from the AAP and joined the BJP.

In Punjab, the ruling AAP retained the Ludhiana West seat. The party's Sanjeev Arora defeated Congress's Bharat Bhushan Ashu by 10,637 votes.
While reacting to the bypoll wins, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he would not become a Rajya Sabha member in the wake of party Rajya Sabha MP Mr. Arora's election as MLA.
When asked who the party will nominate in Mr Arora's place, Mr. Kejriwal said: 'Many times I have been sent to the Rajya Sabha. I want to tell you I am not going to the Rajya Sabha. The political affairs committee of the party will decide whom to nominate.'

In Kerala, it was a setback for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government as the opposition Congress-led UDF wrested the Nilambur assembly constituency from it by a margin of 11,077 votes. Congress' Aryadan Shoukath, son of late Congress leader Aryadan Muhammed, defeated CPI(M) state secretariat member M. Swaraj.
The Nilambur seat fell vacant after LDF-backed independent and two-time MLA P.V. Anvar resigned. Mr. Anvar had won twice from the seat with LDF support. He had resigned as MLA following differences with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He then fought the bypolls as an independent candidate backed by the Trinamool Congress.
In West Bengal, the ruling Trinamool Congress' Alifa Ahamed won Kaliganj by a whopping 50,049 votes, defeating BJP's Ashish Ghosh. Congress' Kabiluddin Shaikh came third with 28,348 votes.

The bye-election was necessitated due to the death of Trinamool Congress MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed.
It was seen as a litmus test for the ruling Trinamool and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee amid myriad controversies, including the loss of jobs of 25,753 teaching and non-teaching jobs in State-run schools.
In a post on X on Monday, Ms. Banerjee said: 'In the by-election of the Kaliganj Assembly constituency, people from all religions, castes, communities, and all walks of life have overwhelmingly blessed us by exercising their voting rights. I humbly express my gratitude to them.'

SIR an attempt to disenfranchise 20% Bihar voters, alleges Cong

1 2 Patna: The Congress on Thursday accused the Election Commission of attempting to disenfranchise nearly 20% of voters in Bihar under the garb of the ongoing special intensive revision of electoral rolls. Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar claimed that the EC had made up its mind to deny voting rights to large sections of the population, especially migrant workers who stay outside the state under compulsion but return home during elections to cast their votes. "It seems the EC has already made up its mind to deny voting rights to Bihar people," he said, questioning the integrity of the entire exercise. He added that people affected by floods have nothing left in their homes and are in no position to produce documents. "Every time there is a flood, their homes get submerged, and they must rebuild from scratch. Where will people living in such conditions bring proof for you?" he asked. He further alleged that the BLOs, who have been assigned the task of verifying thousands of voters, have not been provided the necessary resources to do their job properly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Krishna Allavaru, Congress's in charge for Bihar, accused the EC of acting under govt pressure. "Whenever the govt faces a crisis, its agencies begin such actions," he said. "It is strange that the very voters who elected this government are now being asked to prove their identity. By excluding Aadhaar from this voter revision process, eight crore people are being asked to submit documents they don't have," he added. Pawan Khera, chairman of the party's media and publicity department, described the entire exercise as a move to delete voters' names before the upcoming elections. "The EC's decision is to disenfranchise people, which we strongly oppose," Khera said, linking the timing of the revision drive to a recent opinion survey. "The process was launched just as a new survey showed a surge in popularity for the INDIA bloc and our leader Rahul Gandhi," he said.

PDA strategy, INDIA bloc strength will work in 2027 too: Akhilesh

Attacking the Uttar Pradesh government over its decision to merge primary and upper primary schools having less than 50 students, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday alleged that it was being done to devoid the poor of education. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. (HT file) Yadav also accused the BJP of strategically targeting the ideals of reservation, socialism and secularism, especially when elections are near. 'Whenever elections in Bihar come close, they start speaking against reservation, the Constitution and secularism. When they fear a backlash from their vote base, they attack these values indirectly by undermining social justice,' he alleged while addressing his party workers after inaugurating the new party office in Azamgarh. He proposed naming the newly inaugurated party office in Azamgarh as 'PDA Bhawan', declaring that only Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak (PDA) unity will open the path to social justice and political power. He appealed to the PDA voters to keep an eye on the voters list so that they could exercise their franchise in SP chief claimed that the PDA strategy and INDIA bloc's strength will also work in the 2027 UP assembly polls. Yadav further alleged that the BJP government was identifying such schools wherein booths it had lost and was now planning to close such schools. 'Thousands of such schools are being closed, while liquor shops are being opened indiscriminately,' the SP chief alleged. Referring to the early days of the BJP, Akhilesh reminded the audience of its foundational debates. 'At their first convention, the BJP deliberated on what ideological path to adopt. Some wanted to stick with their original ideology but many knew that India would never accept that path.' Yadav also extended his party's full support to the Rashtriya Janata Dal in the upcoming assembly assembly polls in Bihar.

WB CM writes to Amit Shah over spike in fake social media content, cybercrime

Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote a letter to union home minister Amit Shah, raising her concern over the spike in provocative social media content and cybercrime. Mamata Banerjee had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and fake videos, especially during the violence in Murshidabad (PTI) 'I write to convey my deep concern over an issue that is increasingly posing serious challenges to public tranquillity and the social fabric of our nation – the proliferation of provocative content on some sections of the social media platforms and the alarming rise in cybercrimes,' Banerjee wrote in the letter. Banerjee had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and fake videos, especially during the violence in Murshidabad. 'Yesterday some news was spread that I have resigned. Police have registered an FIR. The jumla party only believes in divide-and-rule policy. Fake videos are being circulated every day. Earlier attempts were made to pass off videos of Gujarat riots as those from Murshidabad,' she had said on April 2. Police had suspended internet services in some parts of Murshidabad after violence broke out in West Bengal's Murshidabad district over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in April, to prevent the spread of misinformation. Videos of a mob attacking the block development office in Jalangi and ransacking the office of a railway gateman in Azimganj had surfaced on social media. Rioters were seen in video clips looting an outlet of a retail chain. Police had reportedly resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas after vehicles were torched, shops looted, and policemen attacked. 'Such content not only spreads misinformation but also has the potential to inflame communal sentiments, incite violence, disrupt societal harmony and indulge in crime against women,' Banerjee added. Banerjee also highlighted the surge in cybercrime and said it is 'growing both in complexity and in its detrimental impact.' Also Read: In Murshidabad riots, rerun of an old story 'From financial frauds and identity theft to online harassment and defamation, cybercrimes are exacting a severe toll on individuals and institutions alike. The current legal framework and its enforcement require further strengthening to keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital ecosystem and the sophisticated methods employed by malicious actors,' she added. Banerjee urged the home minister to launch large-scale awareness campaigns to promote responsible digital behaviour, alongside sensitisation programmes, digital literacy campaigns, and community engagement initiatives. 'This is a collective challenge requiring urgent and coordinated action to safeguard public order, national unity, and the integrity of our democracy,' the Trinamool Congress posted on X.
