Celtic 'must earn place' in Champions League

BBC News3 days ago
Callum McGregor believes Celtic's uplifting campaign in last season's Champions League will "stand us in good stead" for the play-off round next month. After qualifying automatically for the Champions League in each of the previous three seasons, Celtic - who reached the knockout phase last term - will have to come through a play-off round in August to reach the main phase of the tournament due to a drop in Scotland's position in UEFA's association ranking for the five-year period from the 2019-20 to 2023-24 campaigns.Celtic came agonisingly close to their stay in last season's tournament - for an extra 30 minutes at least - but conceded a 94th-minute goal in Munich to lose on aggregate to the German giants."Of course, if we had our way then we would want to be straight in but we have to understand that that is just part and parcel of it," McGregor said."We've been here a number of times throughout the years. We believe that when we've been in the competition, especially last season, we've done well but no-one has the God-given right to be put in there right away."You have to earn your place. For the play-off games, there'll be five or six, seven or eight teams who all think they're good enough to be there but you have to earn the right."It's an amazing competition and I think we saw great growth in the team last season throughout the 10 games to the point there where we went away to Bayern Munich and were so close to getting a result."That should stand us in good stead but I don't want to take anything for granted so let's get in there first and hopefully we can have a similar campaign and even improve on that as well."

Seven more transfers, Vardy in – Rangers dream XI for new season and how they will line up against Club Brugge

It has already been a busy summer at Ibrox - but things are only ramping up The Russell Martin era is set to officially get underway as Rangers face Club Brugge in pre-season. But attention is already on the serious stuff for the new boss and the US owners of the club with the crucial Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos just under three weeks away. ‌ New sporting director Kevin Thelwell hasn't been slow to add to the Rangers' ranks this summer with the club ticking down to the first competitive game of the campaign. ‌ Thelo Asgaard is the latest player to join the American revolution at Ibrox - with Emmanuel Fernandez, Joe Rothwell, Max Aarons and Lyall Cameron already in the door. But more work must be done - with several key positions on the shopping list this summer. Record Sport takes a look at some of the deals that could make it a dream window for the Scottish Premiership giants: Left-back - Owen Beck, Ishe Samuels-Smith Jefte remains the first-choice left-back at Ibrox as it stands - but Russell Martin is keen to add more competition for his spot. Interest has been shown in taking Owen Beck from Liverpool while Rangers are among the clubs interested in taking Ishe Samuels-Smith on loan from Chelsea. But to sign one of the pair, Ridvan Yilmaz would have to be moved on amid links with a return to Besiktas. Centre-back - Conor Coady, Nasser Djiga ‌ Rangers are short at centre-back going into the new season - even after the addition of Emmanuel Fernandez from Peterborough. Conor Coady looks set to add experience with a deal being thrashed out behind the scenes with Leicester City - while Nasser Djiga is closing in on a loan move from Wolves. Winger - Weslley Patati, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi A minimum of two quality additions on the flanks appears to be key for Martin and Thelwell this summer. Rangers are chasing a deal for Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi - who spent last season on loan at Sheffield United - and Maccabi Tel Aviv star Weslley Patati. ‌ Rangers were already short in the wide areas after star man Vaclav Cerny returned to parent club Wolfsburg at the end of last season. Striker - Dor Turgeman, Jamie Vardy ‌ With Hamza Igamane inching closer to a move to Lille and last season's top scorer Cyriel Dessers pushing for a move to AEK Athens, two more strikers are required. Dor Turgeman is on the shopping list with the cash from the two striker sales set to fund his arrival from Maccabi Tel Aviv after Record Sport first revealed the frontman was on the Ibrox shortlist. Jame Vardy could also be a marquee signing for the club - with reports suggesting the free agent is open to a deal. ‌ Dream starting XI Predicted line-up vs Club Brugge And while the fans are dreaming of more deals in time for the clash with the Greeks, they will get the first taste of the Russell Martin era against Brugge - albeit with some familiar faces. Hamza Igamane has yet to report for pre-season and Cyriel Dessers has not been spotted at Auchenhowie leaving Danilo as the man to lead the line. ‌ A decision at right-back will be required between Bournemouth loanee Aarons and James Tavernier - but with John Souttar ramping up his fitness behind the scenes it could be the skipper who partners Emmanuel Fernandez at the heart of defence.

Regular first team opportunities were hard to come by for the winger and he moved to Aberdeen where he spent the best part of a decade. A League Cup winner with the Dons, McGinn made 358 appearances for the club across two spells either side of a short stint in South Korea with Gwangju in 2017. McGinn joined Dundee in January 2022, leaving a year later. He's spent the past two-and-a-half years with Glentoran in Northern Ireland, although he spent the last campaign back in Scotland on loan at Morton. Now, he's back permanently in Scotland with Peterhead. McGinn, who won 72 caps for Northern Ireland, bolsters a squad that is gearing up for the season in League One having been promoted as League Two champions. The move sees him link up with the club's co-manager Jordon Brown who was an Aberdeen teammate. Former Dons pals Cammy Smith and Peter Pawlett are also at Peterhead. Speaking after the move was confirmed, McGinn revealed his delight at returning to the part of the country where he reckons he played his best football. Celebrity Wrexham owner spotted in retro Celtic strip as he asks 'are they Catholics or Protestants' He said: "Delighted to be back up in the North of Scotland in Aberdeenshire, back to where I played the best part of my career and enjoyed my football the most. "It's great to join a club with ambition and off the back of a promotion last season. I'm familiar with the players such as Peter Pawlett and Cammy Smith and of course Jordon who I played with at Aberdeen also so I'm looking forward to getting together with the group." Co-boss Brown added: "Niall needs no introduction and we are delighted that we have been able to add him to the group. "He is a top pro who hasn't played at a lower level than the Championship in Scotland and has shown a commitment in moving back over to Aberdeen still with a top attitude to succeed. "When we were aware of this opportunity it was one we couldn't pass up. "The experience and goal threat Niall brings having been full time his whole career will be crucial in helping our young group and ticks that areas in particular where we were focused on improving. "I'm sure we will all look forward to welcoming him to Balmoor." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

'Significant signing' or 'very underwhelming'?

We asked for your views on the signing of midfielder Thelo Aasgaard after he completed a deal to join Rangers from Luton what some of you had to say:Hector: Yet another signing from a team relegated to the lower divisions in England. This is patronising to the Scottish Premiership and the club's fanbase, and is obviously sub-standard for European competition at any Great bit of business - stood out a mile when I have watched him play. Still young and only going to get better and I think he has a big future in the Brilliant signing, looking forward to seeing him score lots of Super excited about this signing! He is so creative and has goals in his locker also. Scored on his international debut earlier this year for his country, and I can see him being a permanent fixture from now on. Only going to get better and better, mark my words!David: Very underwhelming signing, much the same feelings as when new manager was unveiled. Please overachieve, we need players who can walk into this This is another significant signing and the indications are there's more to come. I sense Russell Martin is building a team for an eventful and hopefully successful season - Aasgaard is a real talent and we should be getting excited at seeing how quickly these new players gel to create a winning team. My only concern is the goalkeeper situation - a weak link in all this activity.
