Euro 2025: Long VAR review of 4-plus minutes decides no penalty for Denmark against Sweden

Yahooa day ago
GENEVA (AP) — A video review of more than four minutes was needed to decide Denmark should not be awarded a penalty against Sweden early in their Women's European Championship game on Friday.
Brazilian referee Edina Alves was whistled and jeered by fans during the long delay. She studied the incident on a fieldside monitor before deciding to award a free kick to Sweden instead.

Play eventually resumed in the 11th minute, fully five minutes after the incident in question in the Sweden penalty area.
A free kick awarded for a foul against Denmark captain Pernille Harder was lofted toward the star forward who tangled with the falling Sweden winger Madelen Janogy. Harder was unable to control the ball which ran to safety toward Sweden goalkeeper Jennifer Falk.
Replays of the incident eventually showed Janogy had herself been tripped by a Denmark opponent on the edge of the penalty area as she ran back to defend the cross.
Alves was invited to referee at Euro 2025 as part of an exchange program between European soccer body UEFA and South America's CONMEBOL.

Rúben Neves serves as pallbearer at Diogo Jota funeral after Al Hilal's Club World Cup match

Rúben Neves and João Cancelo flew to Portugal following Al Hilal's 2-1 defeat to Fluminense in the Club World Cup quarterfinals for the funeral of former Diogo Jota. Neves served as a pallbearer for his close friend who died in a car crash with his brother André Silva in Spain on Thursday. Jota was 28 years old, Silva was 26. Advertisement Prior to the match with Fluminense, Neves posted a tribute to Jota on social media. "Wherever you are, I know you're going to read this, we've never been one for this sort of thing and maybe now I'll regret it a little," Neves wrote on an Instagram post. "But you know what you mean to me just as much as I know what I am to you." "When I go to the national team, you'll still be by my side at the dinner table, on the bus, on the plane... you'll always be there with me, as usual," he continued. "We'll keep laughing, making plans, sharing our lives with each other. I'll make sure you're always there and I'll make sure your family never lacks anything while you're there, far away but thinking of us, waiting for us..." During a moment of silence before the Club World Cup match began, Neves and Cancelo broke down with emotion for their former teammate. Players and staff from Liverpool, for whom Jota played in the Premier League, also traveled to Portugal for the funeral. Among those in attendance were captain Virgil van Dijk and manager Arne Slot. Jota originally joined Liverpool in 2020, scoring 47 goals with 15 assists in his 79 starts with the team, which won the Premier League title for the 2024-25 season. During Chelsea's Club World Cup match with Palmeiras, Jota's Portugal teammate Pedro Neto brought a jersey with the names Diogo and André onto the pitch. At the first show of their reunion tour in Cardiff, Wales, the rock band Oasis had an image of Jota in his Liverpool jersey projected behind the stage. The cause of the crash that killed Jota and Silva is still ongoing. Police do not know who was driving the car and whether or not a blown tire caused the crash. The vehicle, a Lamborghini, was in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene. Bobby Jenks, former White Sox closer and World Series champion, dies at 44

Bobby Jenks pitched six of his seven MLB seasons with the Chicago White Sox, helping the franchise win the 2005 World Series. (Photo by) Former Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks died Friday after a battle with Stage 4 adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer. Jenks was 44 years old. The two-time All-Star and 2005 World Series champion revealed his condition during a February 2025 interview with from a hospital bed in Portugal, where he moved to be closer to his wife's family. Jenks spent six of his seven MLB seasons with the White Sox. He posted back-to-back 40-save seasons in 2006 and 2007 and compiled 86 saves over his final three seasons in Chicago, but is most famous on the South Side for closing out the Fall Classic in 2005, with a future pope in attendance for Game 1. Advertisement During the 2007 season, Jenks retired 47 consecutive batters. He spent the 2011 season, his last in MLB, with the Boston Red Sox. In May 2021, Jenks began working as the pitching coach for the minor-league Grand Junction Rockies. The next season, he was promoted to manager and won the league's Manager of the Year award after helping the team win a championship. Jenks spent the 2023 season as the Princeton WhistlePigs' pitching coach before he returned to managing with the Windy City ThunderBolts later that year. A father of six, Jenks and his wife, Eleni, moved to Portugal in October 2024. Not long after they relocated, he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right calf and later dealt with multiple blood clots in his lungs. Early in 2025, he noticed that his energy level was decreasing, and after testing at a local hospital, it was discovered that a tumor had formed in his chest. Advertisement Jenks told that the tumor spread into his stomach lining, his bones, his lower back and his hips. As Jenks was dealing with his health battle, his family was affected by the Palisades fire, which caused them to lose their home and personal belongings, except for his 2005 World Series ring. 'I've got one suitcase left to my name,' Jenks said. 'It's all gone. Everything else I've ever done. I have everything, first to first. All those things are irreplaceable.'

Xabi Alonso: "We need to take positives today, and move on for the next one"

Xabi Alonso: "We need to take positives today, and move on for the next one" Xabi Alonso spoke to the media after a 3-2 victory for Real Madrid CF, against German side Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinal of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup tournament. With the result, Alonso, who coached Bayer 04 Leverkusen prior to joining the Spanish champions last month, is 2-2-2 as a head coach against BVB all-time. When asked to summarise the match, Alonso said: 'Everything was going under control with the result, not conceding much, but the last 10 minutes were kind of crazy. We lost a little bit of our shape, our intensity, and luckily, nothing went through - but overall, good eighty minutes and last ten minutes, we need to improve.' Advertisement Regarding 21-year-old Madrid-born forward Gonzalo García, who scored in the tenth minute, Alonso praised him for another decent performance: 'He is doing great work for the team - he is helping the team and he is running into the right positions in the box. He is a proper number 9, and we are happy that he is doing that work.' García has four goals in five matches at this tournament for Real Madrid CF. His goal early in the match tied him for top scorer at the Club World Cup, with SL Benfica right-winger Ángel Di María, Al-Hilal SFC forward Marcos Leonardo, and Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy, who also scored in the match, being the other players on four goals. With the other three all eliminated, García needs to score to definitively hold the lead in the race for the Golden Boot. Alonso was asked about Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose presence in the match was uncertain due to the recent passing of former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota. He said regarding the 26-year-old English right-back and the impact the last few days have had on him: 'Yeah, he is just starting out with a new club, after joining from Liverpool, and especially in the last few days, but I am happy that he played this game.' Lastly, he commented about facing Paris Saint-Germain in the second semifinal: 'It is going to be a great challenge for us, to face PSG, but we need to take positives from today, and move on for the next one.' The second semifinal between Real Madrid CF and Paris Saint-Germain starts on Wednesday, 15.00 (EDT) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
