Nissan is set to implement an even more severe turnaround plan than previously envisaged, with seven factories now facing closure and 20,000 jobs on the line.
This follows an annual net loss of 671 billion yen (R82 billion) announced on Tuesday for the financial year to March 2025.
The company announced on the same day that it planned to reduce the number of vehicle production plants in its global network from 17 to 10, by fiscal year 2027, while also reducing the workforce by 20,000. It had previously planned to cut around 9,000 jobs.
Further to that, Nisan said it plans to streamline its powertrain plants and cancel its planned Lithium Iron Phosphate battery plant in Kyushu, Japan.
"We wouldn't be doing this if it was not necessary to survive," said Nissan's newly appointed CEO Ivan Espinosa.
"In the face of challenging FY24 performance and rising variable costs, compounded by an uncertain environment, we must prioritise self-improvement with greater urgency and speed, aiming for profitability that relies less on volume,' he added.

But where does this leave Nissan South Africa's Rosslyn plant, located outside Pretoria?
Nissan has not named the seven plants which face closure, although its Indian and UK facilities appear to be safe, given recently announced production plans for those.
IOL has approached Nissan South Africa for comment, but a response had not been received at the time of writing.
Company spokespersons have previously stated that the local plant was a key hub for its expansion into Africa.
However, it currently only produces the Navara bakkie in double cab and single cab formats, and production volumes are significantly lower than in previous years, following the 2024 discontinuation of the NP200 compact bakkie and the NP300 in 2021.

To put Rosslyn's current production numbers into perspective, Nissan sold just 1838 locally produced Navaras in the first four months of 2025, and exported 3,101 units. That's an average of just 1,234 units per month in total.
Ford South Africa, which also produces just a single bakkie at its Silverton plant in Pretoria, sold 7,933 Rangers to local customers during that same period and exported 20,244 units.
SA-built Navaras are currently exported into Africa, while Ford's Ranger is shipped to over 100 international markets, including Europe.
Furthermore, Nissan's local market share has more than halved in the past seven years, from an annual volume of 51,825 units in 2017 (including imports) to just 22,286 units in 2024.
Following the discontinuation of the NP200 in 2024, whose Russian-developed replacement was cancelled due to the war with Ukraine, Nissan South Africa has been looking for ways to expand production at the plant.
ALSO READ: Nissan opens up about aborted NP200 replacement
In March 2024, a company representative told Moneyweb that the local division was aiming to source another successor to the NP200, and was also investigating a third model for the Rosslyn plant.
It remains to be seen whether any of these projects will go ahead, in light of Nissan's new plan to shut seven plants.
Internationally, Nissan plans to lean more heavily on its alliance partners Renault and Mitsubishi, the latter providing the basis for the Navara replacement.
Nissan also plans to use on Renault's Indian division to launch new MPV and SUV models in 2026 and 2027. Having access to more affordable products from India, could certainly improve Nissan South Africa's fortunes as an importer. The Magnite compact SUV is already the division's best seller.
But whether Nissan SA still has a future as a manufacturer is anyone's guess.

Manufacturing sentiment in South Africa improves as business conditions steady in July

With three consecutive months of growth above the neutral 50.0 mark, the latest S&P Global PMI results suggest a stabilising environment despite ongoing economic challenges. Image: Costfoto / NurPhoto via AFP. The S&P Global South Africa Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) edged up to 50.3 in July, from 50.1 in June, marking a slight but noteworthy improvement in the country's business conditions. This is in line with the latest seasonally adjusted Absa PMI, which increased by 2.3 points to 50.8 in July, following eight consecutive months in contractionary territory. With three consecutive months of growth above the neutral 50.0 mark, the latest S&P Global PMI results suggest a stabilising environment despite ongoing economic challenges. The index, which serves as a comprehensive indicator of the operating conditions in the private sector, reflects a blend of positive trends, particularly in new business and employment. S&P said the growth was predominantly driven by an uptick in new orders, as several firms observed revitalised client activity. Nevertheless, reports indicate that the broader economic landscape remains challenging, with various sectors experiencing divergent performances. While the services and wholesale and retail sectors saw expansion, industries such as construction faced downturns. Furthermore, although domestic sales improved, new export business has dwindled for the fourth straight month, hinting at potential headwinds in international trade. Output levels, albeit broadly unchanged, signify an upward movement since June, when a minor decrease was noted. July witnessed firms raising their employment figures for the second consecutive month, marking the swiftest growth in hiring since May 2024. This hiring surge was attributed to stabilising supply chains, with improved vendor performance observed for the fourth month in a row—highlighting easing port congestion that has historically stricken South Africa's logistics. David Owen, senior economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said business conditions across South Africa improved in July, driven by greater sales and increased employment. Owen said the rise in staffing was the fastest for over a year, showing that firms were more willing to take on new workers in order to boost their capacity and competitiveness. "This nevertheless had an adverse impact on costs aswage inflation accelerated, leading to quickest rise inbusiness expenses since April. However, the increasein charges remained modest and even softened, whichsuggests that firms largely expect this cost jump to betemporary," Owen said. "There was also a solid recovery in business expectations in July, after the survey metric dropped to its lowest level since mid-2021 in June. Firms highlighted a slight improvement in the demand outlook, although there werestill concerns about global trade policy and exchange rate movements." As companies worked to fulfil current orders, S&P said backlogs declined at the fastest pace since February, allowing some businesses to destock unused inputs. This contributed to a slight decline in total inventories, revealing a potential shift towards leaner operational strategies. However, as positive signs emerge, cost pressures have intensified. The July survey indicated a marked increase in price levels, fuelled mainly by rising staff costs. Wage pressures have surged for three consecutive months and remain significantly above average. In tandem, purchase costs have risen due to increased charges for fuel and materials, pushing the rate of input price inflation to its highest since April.

German EV showdown: Bold new Mercedes GLC and BMW iX3 to debut in September

The upcoming Mercedes GLC with EQ Technology (left) and new BMW iX3 both aim to make bold design statements. Image: Supplied There's a German electric SUV showdown looming, and it starts at the IAA Mobility Summit in early September when the new BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology will be revealed to the world for the first time. Not only will the two battery-powered midsize SUVs be direct competitors when they hit the market, but both will usher in new design and engineering eras for their respective carmakers. The Mercedes GLC electric debuts a brand new design language for the firm's electric vehicles, with the softer lines of its current EQ models having faced criticism for their lack of imagination and identity. To whet our appetites, Mercedes released a teaser image this week, showing the new upright, and more traditional-looking, 'grille' that will feature on its electric GLC. The GLC with EQ Technology replaces the EQC and features a more traditional look. Image: Supplied Video Player is loading. While it shares a name with its combustion-engined GLC sibling, the electric model will feature a completely different platform, in the form of Merc's upcoming MB-EA dedicated electric vehicle architecture. Technical details are still under wraps, but CarExpert reports that the new electric GLC is likely to offer a WLTP driving range of more than 800km, while the most powerful version could produce over 500kW. This comes after Mkhize was reported to have missed a deadline to pay a compensation fee to one of the club's former directors. Now, South African businessman Alfred 'Ally' Kgomongwe has confirmed that he has transferred ownership of the club to Mkhize. Next Stay Close ✕ 'As I have said before, there are no two owners of Mbabane Highlanders FC. I am the rightful owner, and I have signed the team over to MaMkhize, and she will now agree with the patrons and elders of the club on how long she will run it.' The club will now begin the Eswatini Premiership under their new name – Mbabane Highlanders FC – after being rebranded in line with MaMkhize's old club, Royal AM. The 'AM' is in honour of her son Andile Mpisane, who served as chairman and player of the KZN club. MaMkhize's foray into Eswatini football comes after Royal AM were kicked out of the PSL due to a number of financial problems. The club was put up for sale by SARS in order to recoup some of the R40 million she owed in taxes. The move also marks a fresh chapter for Mbabane Highlanders, who have endured years of off-field instability. With Mkhize now officially at the helm, supporters will be hoping for long-term investment, better player recruitment, and a push for domestic dominance. The club is one of Eswatini's most storied sides, but recent seasons have been overshadowed by boardroom wrangles and inconsistent performances. With her resources and experience in South African football, Mkhize could be the catalyst the club needs to restore its former glory. IOL Sport
