USA Today12 hours ago
A local newspaper has named a recent addition to the Husker football team as the Nebraska boys' athlete of the year. The Omaha World-Herald has named defensive tackle Tyson Terry as the award winner.
"After putting it all on the line during football season and becoming the state's first four-time state heavyweight wrestling champion, Omaha North's Tyson Terry, a Nebraska commit, is The World-Herald's Boys Athlete of the Year."
Terry finished his prep career with 315 tackles, 48 tackles for loss, 17 sacks, five pass breakups, two blocked field goals, and one touchdown. He missed the majority of his senior year with an injury but managed to make 46 tackles, including nine tackles for loss and two sacks.
He was also a successful high school wrestler. He became the first four-time NSAA state wrestling champion at heavyweight with the victory. Terry disclosed, following his fourth title, that he wrestled with a torn ACL during his senior high school season.
He joins the Huskers as the No. 4-ranked player in the state of Nebraska, according to the On3 Industry Rating.

Spartans target, 3-star DL Nehemiah Kolone commits to BYU over MSU, Oklahoma State

A Michigan State defensive lineman target has announced his commitment to a Big 12 school instead of the Spartans. Nehemiah Kolone of Stillwater, Okla. announced his commitment to the BYU Cougars on Monday evening. Kolone committed to the Cougars over his other two finalists of Michigan State and Oklahoma State. Kolone is a three-star defensive lineman with a recruiting rating of 86.93 in the 247Sports composite system. He is ranked as the No. 104 defensive lineman and No. 947 overall prospect in the 2026 class. Michigan State was once considered the favorite for Kolone's commitment but he most recently visited with BYU in late June and one can assume that visit went well. This commitment from Kolone to the Cougars could also be telling of another potential defensive lineman prospect being in the mix for the Spartans since they are still in need of one more commit at that position. So we will need to monitor the Spartans on the recruiting trail to see if someone else could be joining their class based on the commitment from Kolone to BYU on Monday. Spartans listed as one of favorites for college hockey 2026 national championship

The winners of the Gavin McKenna sweepstakes are the betting favorites to win next year's college hockey national championship. But Michigan State is right behind the Nittany Lions. With the news that Penn State is expected to land the commitment from superstar prospect McKenna, the Nittany Lions have become the favorites at Draft Kings to win the 2026 national championship. But Michigan State is right behind with Boston University as the next best odds. Penn State is posted at +500, Michigan State and Boston University are posted at +800, Michigan is next at +900, and then Minnesota, Denver and Boston College follow that at +1200. Per College Puck NXT, these are the first odds posted for the 2026 college hockey national championship. So it's clear that the McKenna news has pushed the Nittany Lions to the top of the betting board. This time last week, Michigan State would have probably been the listed favorite and had they landed McKenna, they would have been the odds on favorites by a lot. Still, it's clear the betting professionals expect a lot out of the Spartans next year and it should be another strong season on the ice for the Spartans if they live up to their potential. 49ers Linked to Huge Trade for New Brock Purdy Weapon

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Heading into the 2025 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers are a major question mark. After making it all the way to the Super Bowl just two years ago, they missed the playoffs last season. While the 49ers lost quite a few key players during the offseason, they were also able to lock up both Brock Purdy and George Kittle to long-term deals. Now, the question becomes, is the roster set heading into the upcoming campaign? Adding more offensive firepower could be in the cards for San Francisco. If John Lynch is interested in making an aggressive move, one has been suggested. Quarterback Brock Purdy #13 of the San Francisco 49ers looks on after a play during the first half of a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on August 23, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. More Photo byMike Kadlick of Sports Illustrated has named the 49ers as one of the best potential trade destinations for Washington Commanders star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Read more: Packers Linked to Late-Offseason Move for 58-Sack Pass Rusher He noted that making a move for McLaurin would help replace the loss of Deebo Samuel, who was traded by San Francisco to the Commanders earlier this offseason. "After sending wide receiver Deebo Samuel to Washington earlier this offseason, perhaps the 49ers can get some pass-catching help back in a follow-up deal for McLaurin," Kadlick wrote. "San Francisco enters 2025 with star Brandon Aiyuk returning from ACL surgery and former first-round pick Ricky Pearsall hopeful to make a year-two jump—but could use some additional help for their newly extended quarterback in Brock Purdy. The 49ers currently have the third-most cap space in the NFL according to Spotrac, and could reasonably meet the 29-year-old's asking price." McLaurin has been one of the most underrated wide receivers in the NFL for years. He is coming off of another productive season in 2024. Last season with Washington, McLaurin racked up 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was also able to play in all 17 regular season games for the fourth year in a row. Read more: Steelers Predicted to Land Dynamic Aaron Rodgers Replacement Adding McLaurin alongside of Brandon Aiyuk and Kittle would give Purdy three elite weapons to work with. He's 29 years old, which should give him a few more good years playing at a prime level. Making a move for McLaurin would not come cheap. However, he could be the piece that helps power the 49ers back into the playoffs. Purdy would be a big winner as well. Expect to continue hearing rumors surrounding McLaurin heading towards the start of the 2025 season. It would not be shocking to see San Francisco connected to him again at some point.
