Locals angry over water delays after planned water supply maintenance period

The Citizen5 days ago
Several residents in eMalahleni are angry and frustrated as water problems continue, even after the municipality had announced that repairs were finished last week.
People are asking why they still don't have water when the maintenance was meant to fix things.
The maintenance on Witbank Water Treatment Works, Old Coronation Bulk Water Pipeline, Point B Reservoir, Point D Reservoir Pump Station, and Point D 5 Megalitre was scheduled from July 21 to July 25. All areas supplied by Reservoirs Point A, B, C, D, and E were affected.
Residents expressed how their everyday lives are impacted by the ongoing lack of water.
In Del Judor, one resident said her husband had to go to work wearing dirty clothes.
'The man must go to work dirty, he can't stay at home, and otherwise they don't get paid. This is really heart-breaking,' she said.
She also mentioned that her children haven't gone to school because they haven't bathed.
Business owners also came forward to voice out their frustrations. A local carwash owner said, 'I have been pleading with the officials for a while now.
They keep on turning me back. I wonder if there's just no water for businesses. I can't afford not to operate. What about my employees?
A part of Reyno Ridge is among those still without proper water supply. Some residents say they didn't receive any water even before the shutdown started.
Political parties expressed their concerns about the water issue.
According to Clr Sharon Schlachter from the VF Plus, the continued water woes have posed dangerous mental health issues to some residents.
'Access to clean and consistent water is a fundamental need, and the ongoing outages are severely impacting daily life and public health, both physical and mental,' said Sharon Schlachter of the VF Plus. 'The stress, anxiety, and frustration experienced by residents due to this crisis can not be understated. We, the VF Plus, will take serious action if this critical issue is not addressed promptly and effectively, and if the municipality fails to uphold its obligations under the Water Services Act, ensure transparent communication, and demonstrate responsive leadership,' she added.
An inquire was sent to Emalahleni Local Municipality spokesperson Lebo Mofokeng, who has not responded.

Swine Flu has many in bed in eMalahleni

Look after yourself, Swine Flu has taken hold of eMalahleni. Doctors' rooms are full, and pharmacists are running around trying to fill everyone's prescriptions. More than 10 years after the 2009 pandemic, Swine Flu, officially called Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, continues to appear in South Africa during the cold, dry winter months. Though many people now think of it as just another seasonal illness, health experts warn that it can still be serious, especially for those at higher risk. Professor Cheryl Cohen, a South African expert in respiratory viruses, explained, 'Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 is one of the three main types of seasonal flu. Even though it originally came from pigs, the version we see today spreads easily from one person to another and is fully adapted to humans.' Since the 2009 outbreak, H1N1 has become a regular part of the flu season. The symptoms are like a strong cold: fever, chills, body aches, tiredness, and a dry cough. But in some people, the illness can quickly get worse. 'It can cause serious problems like pneumonia,' said Cohen. 'Most people get better, but people with other health problems or weak immune systems are much more likely to end up in hospital or worse.' People most at risk include the elderly, young children, those with heart or lung diseases, and individuals with compromised immune systems, especially people living with HIV/AIDS. In communities where access to healthcare is limited, the virus can become life-threatening. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) urges people, especially those in high-risk groups, to get vaccinated annually. The flu vaccine, which includes protection against H1N1, is available at public health clinics and private pharmacies across the country. It is free for children, the elderly, and people with chronic conditions at government clinics. Simple preventive measures can make a big difference: Get vaccinated every year. Wash your hands regularly. Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing. Avoid close contact with sick individuals. Stay home if you are unwell. Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen. Local resident Renate Viljoen, who is currently recovering from the flu, said, 'It started with body aches and a fever, and I thought it was nothing. But by the next day, I could hardly get out of bed. People must not wait; go to the clinic early.' Patient demand answers after allegedly receiving incorrect medication

The patient, who has been managing her condition with medication for more than 15 years, is now seeking answers and justice after suffering adverse effects from alleged incorrect medication. The woman was allegedly given incorrect medication during April, which led her to pass out for a few hours and caused severe body aches. She was pregnant at the time and said she woke up from shocking pains in her body, and her hand which had a drip was also swollen and painful. When she got home, the pain was even worse. According to the woman, it was then brought to her attention by another nurse from a different clinic after she had gone for her pregnancy checkup. The nurse asked her if she was aware that she had been allegedly given the wrong medication. Her efforts to report the matter were in vain, as the hospital allegedly never came back to her as they had promised. 'The experience I had at the hospital has made me fear going back to the hospital. I now get sick and get healed while at home,' she said. More alarming is the allegation that no one from the hospital checked up on her after the mistake, leaving her to deal with the consequences on her own. The woman said the alleged wrong medication has had severe effects on her health, particularly her hand, which she claims is no longer functioning properly. She is understandably upset and frustrated, not only by the mistake itself, but also by the lack of concern shown by the hospital staff. 'I feel like if I go back there, they might even make it worse. I really need those in power to interfere,' she softly said in pain. The woman is now seeking answers and action from the hospital administration. She wants to know what went wrong, how the mistake was made, and what measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. An inquiry about the incident has been sent to the Department of Health Spokesperson, Prince Nobela, who has not yet responded.
