Nectar Triantis remains Hibs top transfer target but David Gray warns he's not their only option as wait window closes

Daily Record4 days ago
Traintis has since returned to parent club Sunderland and their promotion to the English Premier League has complicated matters
David Gray has reiterated that Nectar Triantis remains Hibs ' top target - but he is not their only option to fill that midfield berth.
The Australian had a successful loan spell at Easter Road last season and was shortlisted for the PFA Scotland young player of the year award.

Triantis has since gone back to Sunderland, who have just been promoted to the English Premier League, as he weighs up his next move.

Hibs boss Gray acknowledged: 'You don't want to just be waiting around. We've got a clear plan of what we need to do.
'We're not just going to sit here and pin our hopes on a player deciding what he wants to do. We've made our interests very clear.
'Everybody's aware of that, but we're also working extremely hard to make sure we bring in quality in that position and the right type of people.
'We talk about that all the time. That work's never stopped.
'Nectar was clearly a loan player last season as well. We were always going to be at this point, depending on if it went well or not.
'I think Nectar was fantastic last season. Loads of improvement.

'It's always going to be something that's never going to happen overnight just purely because of how well he's done. He's going to attract a lot of interest.
'His parent club have just been promoted to the Premier League so they're going through a bit of a transition as to what their plan is going to be moving forward.'

Hibs have targeted other midfield targets south of the border but Triantis still remains the main man.
Gray added: 'For us, he's a big part of what we've done last season.
'When fit, he played nearly every minute of every game. He was a huge player for us last season.

'That's part of being a young player at such a big club.
'That's why nothing will happen really quickly at that stage because their priority will be dealing with the Premier League and what that looks like, how they jump from the Championship to the Premier League and the importance of trying to stay in that league and what that looks like.
'For a young player who's been on loan last season and who's done really, really well, they'll still have to go back and see exactly what it looks like. I'm sure there'll be conversations being had about what's best for Nectar.

'You just touched on the other levels and the money that can get spent at that sort of level. That's why nothing will happen directly overnight.
'There is always a process that everybody will have to go through and try to find out what's best out for everyone.'
Gray has been delighted that Rocky Bushiri and Junior Hoilett have both committed.
He added: 'I think I spoke so many times now about how good the group was last season - and they were two big parts of that,' said Gray. 'I think not just in their performance levels, but how they are every day around the building. Both leaders in different ways.'

Wrexham: Rathbone 'grateful' for chance on Down Under Tour

The midfielder is embarking on his first pre-season tour with Wrexham who have headed for Australia and New Zealand. Phil Parkinson's side will play games in Australia against Melbourne Victory on July 11 and Sydney FC on July 15, and Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand on July 19. The Reds' party flew out yesterday and it is a trip that Rathbone is looking forward to. "This is what is special about being part of this club," said the 28-year-old. "Not just being part of the community and working with the staff and the players but to get this type of opportunity. "There are not many clubs, especially in the Football League, that get an opportunity like this so I am incredibly grateful." Rathbone joined Wrexham from Rotherham United for a then club record transfer fee days before the 2024-25 League One campaign kicked off. He missed out on the club's second pre-season tour to America but he says the trip Down Under will make up for that. "I never did America because I signed just before the season started so this is my first pre-season trip with Wrexham, and it is a good one," he said. "The furthest I have been in pre-season is Tenerife and Croatia. "I am really excited to go out there and experience it. "It is pinch yourself stuff, it is incredible to get the chance to do this. "As a player, that is why it is so great to be here at this moment in time. "It is a club that is really on the up and you get to experience really special things." Wrexham are preparing for the new Championship campaign having secured an historic third successive promotion last term when the Reds finished runners-up in League One. They might only be friendlies but Rathbone views them as crucial in the build-up to the new season which starts with a clash against Southampton at St Marys on Saturday August 9. "I don't really know much about the A-League but another fantastic experience for us," he said. "They are all games that we will take very seriously because we are preparing for a big campaign ahead of us. "With this manager and this squad of players, we know the standards we have set and we know what a really good Wrexham side looks like. "It is all about building yourself up, and making sure you are ready for the first game of the season." MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS It has been an eventful summer for Rathbone on the back of a successful first campaign at The Racecourse when he played his part in the latest promotion and won the Player of the Season award. "I had a fantastic summer," said Rathbone. "It couldn't have gone any better. "We won promotion, then the great trip away with the lads (to Las Vegas), I got married and went on honeymoon to the Amalfi Coast where we had a really good time so perfect."

Manager who Robbie Savage sacked at Macclesfield doesn't hold back about Forest Green move

Manager who Robbie Savage sacked at Macclesfield doesn't hold back about Forest Green move After Robbie Savage departed Macclesfield to join Forest Green Rovers, a manager the former Premier League star previously sacked has offered his clear thoughts on the move Robbie Savage was recently unveiled as the new manager of Forest Green Rovers, and posed for a picture with owner Dale Vince (Image: FGRFC_Official/X ) A former Macclesfield manager that was sacked by Robbie Savage believes the club will be in a "better position" now the ex-Wales captain has left. Savage, 50, was recently unveiled as the new manager of League Two side Forest Green Rovers. His move comes one year after he appointed himself as head coach of the Silkmen and four years after he became a board member of the re-launched side. ‌ Before he inserted himself into the dugout, Savage was a director of football at Macclesfield. He parted with predecessor Michael Clegg, before appointing himself as head coach. ‌ In his one and only season in charge, Macclesfield dominated the Northern Premier League, winning the title by 26 points and comfortably getting promoted into the National League North – the sixth tier of English football. Despite committing last month to remain with the Silkmen by extending his contract by two years, Savage ultimately resigned as head coach and director of football, but remained a part-owner of the club. After news of his exit was confirmed, Clegg tweeted his reaction. He wrote: " A massive day for Macc (Macclesfield). They are now in a better position than ever… this club will fly now.' Article continues below While replying to another fan on social media, Clegg reaffirmed his comment, writing: " My life since Macc has been amazing. From office staff to players to maintenance men. There will be a party tonight. Trust me." Clegg is now the manager of Atherton Collieries (Image: MacclesfieldFC/X ) Clegg was appointed as manager of Macclesfield in February 2024 and came within 90 minutes of promotion in the NPL Premier play-off final, but the Silkmen lost 2-1 to Marine. While various reports claimed Clegg was sacked by the club, he told the Bolton News the decision was a mutual one. ‌ Clegg, who is now the manager of Atherton Collieries, said: "Working at a club of that size it's a lot of phone calls from agents, there was always something, but I just always had a feeling that I wouldn't start the season, whether that was for me or from their side. I was right. "Everything dragged on longer than it should have done. I wasn't an angel, and I could have handled it better. I didn't need to leave the club. "A lot of people thought I got sacked but the club was keen for me to stay but the terms of my work there were different to the terms of my contract, and that is what I wasn't happy with. ‌ Savage guided Macclesfield to promotion to the National League North (Image: Andy Stenning/Daily Mirror ) "Absolutely nothing to do with money, anything but, more that the conditions they wanted me to work under were a no-go. I got on really well with the board, well, there was only one person I didn't get on with, but once they knew how torn that relationship was it proved impossible to carry on." Not long after Savage's exit, Macclesfield announced the appointment of John Rooney – the younger brother of Manchester United legend Wayne – as manager. Rooney had spent the last two years as a player of the club, but will now become the new head coach. Man Utd ready to sign 'useful' free agent after failing to land transfer target

Manchester United will still hope to make a bigger splash in the transfer window after seeing their efforts slow down following the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves Manchester United's quest to improve Ruben Amorim's squad goes on with little over a month until the Premier League returns. And the Portuguese coach will soon have his squad in pre-season training ahead of a tour to the United States. The summer transfer window got off to a quick start with the arrival of Matheus Cunha, but the Red Devils have not been able to build on that momentum. Only the arrival of teenager star Diego Leon has been confirmed since with plenty of work to be done. ‌ United have failed to trim their squad thus far too. Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof departed at the end of their contracts, while Jonny Evans moved to a coaching role but Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho all remain at Old Trafford. ‌ But the club still hope to strengthen in their forward positions despite being unable to secure an agreement for Bryan Mbeumo thus far. An out-and-out striker may not go amiss for Amorim too. United eye free agent Manchester United are ready to sign free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a cost-effective solution for Ruben Amorim's squad. United are in the process of rebuilding their squad the Portuguese coach is said to believe that Calvert-Lewin would be a useful addition alongside more expensive signings. Despite a poor injury record, reports claim that United believe the forward has the qualities required to bolster Amorim's squad. United are ready to offer Calvert-Lewin a contract which would include bonuses tied into appearances as they eye a handy squad player. Calvert-Lewin left Everton after nine years at the end of June and is looking for a new club. The 28-year-old striker scored 71 goals in 273 appearances for the Toffees after joining them from Sheffield United in 2016. ‌ Gyokeres latest Any hope Manchester United had of landing Viktor Gyokeres appears to be over as Arsenal close in on deal for the Sweden striker. The Gunners are advancing in talks with Sporting Lisbon as the Portuguese side granted the striker additional time off as they seek to resolve his future. Andrea Berta had been progressing deals for Gyokeres and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, but the former now appears to have won out as Arsenal move closer to finally signing a striker. The two clubs have yet to agree on a fee but it is understood Arsenal and Gyokeres have already agreed personal terms. And with the player prioritising a move to Arsenal, having rejected other suitors, it now looks likely that a deal will be completed. ‌ Sancho update Juventus are preparing to make an offer to Manchester United for Jadon Sancho. The Serie A side are said to have already held talks with the winger, who is reportedly open to life in Italy. Per Corriere dello Sport, Juve are willing to allow Douglas Luiz to move in the opposite direction to aid a move. Sancho is said to have been yet to agree personal terms but is willing to reduce his salary. The Old Lady is said to also be considering a move for Tottenham's Yves Bissouma.
