Wrexham: Rathbone 'grateful' for chance on Down Under Tour

Leader Live21 hours ago
The midfielder is embarking on his first pre-season tour with Wrexham who have headed for Australia and New Zealand.
Phil Parkinson's side will play games in Australia against Melbourne Victory on July 11 and Sydney FC on July 15, and Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand on July 19.
The Reds' party flew out yesterday and it is a trip that Rathbone is looking forward to.
"This is what is special about being part of this club," said the 28-year-old.
"Not just being part of the community and working with the staff and the players but to get this type of opportunity.
"There are not many clubs, especially in the Football League, that get an opportunity like this so I am incredibly grateful."
Rathbone joined Wrexham from Rotherham United for a then club record transfer fee days before the 2024-25 League One campaign kicked off.
He missed out on the club's second pre-season tour to America but he says the trip Down Under will make up for that.
"I never did America because I signed just before the season started so this is my first pre-season trip with Wrexham, and it is a good one," he said.
"The furthest I have been in pre-season is Tenerife and Croatia.
"I am really excited to go out there and experience it.
"It is pinch yourself stuff, it is incredible to get the chance to do this.
"As a player, that is why it is so great to be here at this moment in time.
"It is a club that is really on the up and you get to experience really special things."
Wrexham are preparing for the new Championship campaign having secured an historic third successive promotion last term when the Reds finished runners-up in League One.
They might only be friendlies but Rathbone views them as crucial in the build-up to the new season which starts with a clash against Southampton at St Marys on Saturday August 9.
"I don't really know much about the A-League but another fantastic experience for us," he said.
"They are all games that we will take very seriously because we are preparing for a big campaign ahead of us.
"With this manager and this squad of players, we know the standards we have set and we know what a really good Wrexham side looks like.
"It is all about building yourself up, and making sure you are ready for the first game of the season."

It has been an eventful summer for Rathbone on the back of a successful first campaign at The Racecourse when he played his part in the latest promotion and won the Player of the Season award.
"I had a fantastic summer," said Rathbone. "It couldn't have gone any better.
"We won promotion, then the great trip away with the lads (to Las Vegas), I got married and went on honeymoon to the Amalfi Coast where we had a really good time so perfect."

Wrexham hit with major Jamie Vardy blow as rival boss hints at stunning deal

Wrexham have been linked with a move for Jamie Vardy, but Rangers have now emerged as a potential destination and manager Russell Martin has addressed the rumours Rangers boss Russell Martin has refused to rule out signing Jamie Vardy this summer, with the former England international available on a free transfer. Vardy left Leicester after 13 years last season and has also been linked with a move to Wrexham. The 38-year-old scored 145 Premier League goals for Leicester, a figure that puts him 14th on the all-time list, and Rangers have been mooted as a potential destination. And when asked about a move for Vardy following a pre-season friendly against Club Brugge, Martin refused to be drawn. ‌ "I think I've been asked about so many players," he said. "Some miles away, some on the money. So, basically, I'm not going to give you an answer on that. But I guess you'll find out who's real and who's not in the next few weeks. ‌ "I think we definitely want to do more [signings], for sure. And also probably some players need to move on as well at some point because the squad's going to start looking very big and very heavy." Although Wrexham have long been credited with an interested in Vardy, reports emerged from Italy recently claiming that Genoa had been in pole position to sign the striker. It was claimed that the club's sporting director, Flavio Ricciardella, was keen on signing Vardy. Riccardella is said to have lined up a deal which would have been financed by support from sponsors, but Genoa boss Patrick Vieira reportedly vetoed the move. ‌ Vardy has said he believes he can still compete at the highest level, telling Sky Sports back in May that he has no doubts about his ability. "No, but that's just me," he said. " Football is a crazy world. "You never know what's going to happen. I'll keep going until my legs tell me I need to stop. My legs are fine. I'm doing a sport that I love, it's what I've done since I was a little kid so long may that continue." ‌ Reflecting on his time at Leicester, Vardy added: "You can speak to my family and they'll all say I'm emotionless. It might do at the end of the game or whatever, but until that happens, I'm literally just focused on the game. "You don't get a chance to look back on it. It's about seeing out the season with momentum to start next season. I keep saying it and it's weird, but you don't get a chance to look back on it. Because you're in it, the season finishes, you shut off completely. ‌ "Mentally and physically, it's a killer. It does you in. So by the time you've then had your couple of weeks to switch off, you're then back in, getting ready for the new season. So it just keeps rolling into one."

Danny Rohl's assistant in line to succeed German as new Sheffield Wednesday boss

Danish coach Henrik Pedersen looks set to be Sheffield Wednesday's next manager having agreed a deal to stay at the club despite a backdrop of unmitigated chaos Henrik Pedersen is set to succeed Danny Rohl as boss of crisis club Sheffield Wednesday. The Dane, 47, was Rohl's assistant at Hillsborough as the highly-rated German staged a great escape to keep the club in the Championship before steering the Owls to a top-half finish last term. But things have turned sour with under-fire owner Dejphon Chansiri failing to pay players and staff on time in successive months, leading to a transfer embargo and almost certain points deduction. Wednesday are also in trouble for defaulting on payments to the tax man and to other clubs regarding historic transfer fees. ‌ Despite this, Pedersen is keen to stay in the Steel City after his contract expired at the end of last month having settled in the area with his young family. ‌ Wednesday announced late on Monday night that Pedersen had agreed a deal to stay with the club and would join the players on their pre-season training camp at St George's Park this week. But it's understood that he will step up to become manager when Rohl, who is under contract until the summer of 2027, has finalised a severance package that will rubber-stamp his exit from Hillsborough. Rohl has been linked with jobs at Southampton and Leicester as well as a clutch of positions in his native Germany, but is yet to secure a move elsewhere. ‌ 'When the opportunity presented itself and the chairman asked me to extend my current contract with the club, I didn't hesitate," Pedersen said. 'It's no secret that my family and I have fallen in love with this great club and also this wonderful city that has made us so welcome. The fans are what carries a club through tough games, good times and bad. And our supporters are the best. ‌ 'I'm excited to continue my role at the club and getting back to work supporting the team and working with the great group of players we have. To the fans, I look forward to seeing you all again soon.' Thai tuna magnate Chansiri, meanwhile, has accepted he is in the end game as Owls owner and has agreed to work with a professional group who boast a proven track record of selling football clubs. Chansiri has already rejected at least two bids from a Florida-based consortium of businessmen and professional sportspeople, including Sheffield-born Wednesday fan Adam Shaw who has made his money Stateside. ‌ John Textor, who has recently left Crystal Palace, has also been credited with interest while there are additional glances from the Middle East. But Wednesday are unable to sign any players on more than £7,000-a-week while ever their debts to players, the tax man and other clubs remain. They have also been banned from spending transfer or loan fees for the next three windows. The future of talismanic captain Barry Bannan is also still uncertain having seen his contract expire at the end of last season, though he joined up with the rest of the squad to report for pre-season last week and is with his teammates at St George's Park. SPFL to sell alcohol at upcoming Premier Sports Cup matches

The Championship club has confirmed they have been granted and alcohol licence for two upcoming games - against Arbroath and Forfar. A pop-up bar will be in use inside Somerset Park when both Angus clubs come to town, on July 19 and three days later on July 22. South Ayrshire Council granted the licence and it will be the first time punters have been able to buy alcohol at a Scottish football game since 1981, after it was outlawed due to trouble at the Scottish Cup final. A maximum of 66 supporters, who must be 18, will be able to pay £35 for a ticket and have access to the bar. They will be allowed up to four pints for Birra Moretti before the match and another at half-time. Read more: The club said on social media: "Ayr United is delighted to be taking part in a Scottish Football project and can announce details for its matchday pop-up bar inside Somerset Park for the Premier Sports Cup matches against Arbroath and Forfar!" They add that they hope this pilot "will add to the enjoyment of the matchday experience for supporters' and 'will provide the SPFL and local stakeholders with comfort in the club's ability to sell alcohol safely within the stadium." This year, Police Scotland insisted it was "open to discussions" around looking into changing the laws around alcohol at football. However, the Scottish Government poured cold water on any hopes. First Minister John Swinney said: 'I understand the aspiration amongst football clubs and some football interests to take forward measures to address the ban on alcohol in football stadiums. "I'm not sympathetic to that. I understand where they're coming from, but I am not sympathetic to that. 'I think we've got a set of arrangements in place just now that work, that are appropriate, that are necessary, and I think we should stick with them.'
