
Microsoft's AI Vision Is Brilliant, But Who Will It Prioritize?
On July 24, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella issued a note to Microsoft staff in which he explained his vision of "the why", "the what" and "the how" of Microsoft at the start of new year and at a time of major AI change. It is well worth reading. It may affect us all.
Reshaping The AI Narrative
His articulation of "the why", is the most important part.
The Focus Is On Both Individuals And Enterprises
The vision restates Nadella's 2014 vision, emphasizing value for both individuals and enterprises.
Microsoft's Track Record In Communications
The vision statement has raised a furor over how inevitable staff terminations are being handled. But the more important question is how Microsoft will go about implementing its vision of empowering AI for individuals.
The question is underlined by the fact that Microsoft appears to have done the exact opposite in the communications field. Here, its tool, the controls-rich product Teams (with 36% market share), has become a perfect fit for its hierarchical bureaucratic enterprise customers. Essentially, Microsoft has ceded the field of individual-friendly communications tools to Zoom (with 55% market share). The recent cancellation of Microsoft's Skype tool shows that the decision is final. In essence, in the communications field, Microsoft prioritizes enterprise money and controls over individual user needs. Will it be the same in AI?
The Credibility Of Microsoft's AI Vision
Against this track record, it is fair to ask how far the implementation of Nadella's brilliant AI vision will empower individual users, not just enterprises.
Microsoft's extraordinary financial success under Nadella's tenure (with a market capitalization of $3.8 trillion) has been largely driven by enterprise solutions, particularly Azure and cloud services, which cater to business needs. In his role as a leader, Nadella's emphasis on empathy has also been a remarkable cornerstone.
In some of its tools, (such as gaming, Word and PowerPoint) Microsoft has been able to achieve some balance in addressing both individual and enterprise needs. It has also made strides in consumer AI tools (e.g., Windows AI Foundry) and in skilling initiatives. These are however less developed than its enterprise offerings, suggesting individual empowerment may have become a secondary focus in Microsoft's implementation of its vision.
Now Nadella's AI vision reflects an aspirational goal to democratize AI. Against the background of its recent strategic choices in communications—favoring enterprise controls over user-friendly accessibility—there is an obvious question of the credibility of its approach. Over time, as consumer AI tools mature, Microsoft may close this gap, but in recent moves, its enterprise focus has been striking.
A key element in understanding the AI situation is the remarkable dynamism of AI, which makes it almost impossible to say exactly what will happen or when or what the choices will be. Everything is happening at Mach speed with many potential risks and opportunities. This underlines the importance of the mindset with which Microsoft will approach the implementation of its AI vision.
Microsoft's recent actions, particularly in the communications field, raise questions about whose AI needs will be prioritized. Enterprises? Or individuals? Or a balance of the two?

Amazon Online Retail Sales Surged 11% In Second Quarter, Ahead Of Amazon Prime Day
Online shoppers came out in full force to power 11% growth in Amazon online store sales, its largest reporting segment, and its second-largest, third-party seller services, advanced 11% in the second quarter ended June 30, all before the big Amazon Prime Day four-day sales event. Amazon Web Services, its business-facing cloud segment, was the fastest-growing unit, up 17% to $30.9 billion, though growth slowed from 19% second quarter 2024 and lagged behind Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, both of which reported growth over 30% this year. On the consumer side of business, Amazon's online store exceeded Wall Street's $59 billion estimates to reach $61.5 billion and grew more than twice as fast as last year's second quarter when online stores advanced by 5%. Services to its over two million third-party marketplace sellers bettered expectations to reach $40.3 billion, though it grew at about the same pace as last year's second quarter. Advertising services, an important profit driver, reached $15.7 billion, up 23% over previous year, and subscription services grew 12% to $12.2 billion. Third quarter 2025 guidance is for net sales to reach between $174.0 billion and $179.5 billion, a 10% to 13% increase, though operating income is expected to range between $15.5 billion and $20.5 billion, compared to $17.4 billion last year. 'There continues to be a lot of noise about the impact that tariffs will have on retail prices and consumption. Much of it thus far has been wrong and misreported,' CEO Andy Jassy said during the earnings call. He added, 'Through the first half of the year, we haven't yet seen diminishing demand nor prices meaningfully appreciating.' Key Background Amazon's online retail sales increase bettered the industry's 6% non-store sales growth in the second quarter. Second-quarter performance is particularly noteworthy because it doesn't include revenues generated during this year's Prime Day event held July 8-11, 2025. By comparison, second- quarter online revenues this year came in a shade higher than the $61.4 billion generated during last year's third quarter when Prime Day was held. Amazon also reported that Prime membership signups during the three weeks before this year's Prime Day broke records, as did the number of items sold in advance. All of which bodes well for a significant increase over last year's third quarter online store revenues. The long-awaited return of Nike products to Amazon gave this quarter's online sales a boost. Also generating greater customer engagement was the launch of new luxury brands on the platform, including Aveda, Marc Jacobs fragrances, Aveda, Origins and Milk Makeup. In addition, the Saks on Amazon platform added Dolce & Gabbana, Etro, Stella McCartney, Rosetta Getty, and La Prairie this quarter. The Amazon Essentials product line offering everyday low prices continues to gain new adherents and now represents one out of every three units sold. Amazon Pharmacy has advanced 50% year over year. In a new pilot Perishables service for customers ordering other items for same day delivery, it reported 'strong customer adoption' with 20% of customers returning multiple times in their first month. It is also leaning into faster delivery by expanding same-day and next-day delivery to millions of U.S. customers in 4,000 smaller cities, towns and rural communities by the end of 2025. What To Watch For Tariff's impact on Amazon retail prices remain to be seen, as Jassy said, 'It's impossible to know what will happen.' He gave no hint about how prices might be affected once Amazon's advanced inventory is depleted, nor did he reveal how the company or its third-party sellers would deal with prices as costs go up. However, he did state that no matter what happens, Amazon's prices are likely to be lower to consumers 'on the items they care about.' Shares of the Redmond, Wash., software and cloud-services colossus surged past $550, thanks in part to strong results from its cloud and AIbusinesses. "The rate of innovation and the speed of diffusion is unlike anything we have seen," CEO Satya Nadella said during the company's earnings call. "To that end, we are building the most comprehensive suite of AI products and tech stack at massive scale." Revenue increased 18%, marking the fastest growth in more than three years. "We are going through a generational tech shift with AI, and I have never been more confident in Microsoft's opportunity to drive long-term growth and define what the future looks like,' he said. Analyst cites Microsoft impressive results TheStreet Pro's lead portfolio manager, Chris Versace, said Microsoft guided Azure growth to 37% year over year in the current quarter and hiked its capital spending for the period to $30 billion, confirming that AI demand remains robust and the data center infrastructure shortage continues. "With $368 billion of contracted backlog for Azure and Microsoft Cloud, we should see elevated capital spending levels continue," he said. "While it may be a bit premature to say, it sure looks to us like the AI and data center arms race isn't slowing down," he said. Several investment firms issued research reports after Microsoft reported results. Truist analyst Joel Fishbein raised the investment firm's price target to $650 from $600 and maintained a buy rating on MSFT shares, according to The Fly. Microsoft delivered impressive results, Fishbein said, as momentum continued to build in Azure. The segment accelerated by 6 percentage points from fiscal Q3, he wrote. Management also called out strength in migrations as well as continued expansion of AI workloads driving the segment, he added. Wedbush raised its price target on Microsoft to $625 from $600 and affirmed an outperform rating on the shares, citing "eye-popping" cloud and AI strength. The firms said that this quarter was "music to the ears of MSFT bulls" as it exceeded Wall Street expectations with significantly reaccelerated Azure growth. The AI revolution remains prominent with more companies doubling down on these strategic initiatives, the firm said. Trader warns of bifurcated market On the other hand, TheStreet Pro's James 'Rev Shark' DePorre isn't quite down with the market euphoria. DePorre, a self-taught stock trader and the founder of Shark Investing, said markets were sliding on July 30 after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell delivered a more hawkish message than many investors had anticipated. But that turned around after Microsoft and Meta posted their stellar results."Both companies far exceeded expectations, but, most importantly, they signaled a substantial expansion in capital spending as they race to dominate the AI industry," he said. DePorre said the AI industry and the Magnificent 7 stocks (Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla) in particular are dominating economic growth and rendering the fuss about the Fed and interest rates nearly meaningless. A cut in interest rates would be nice, he added, "but when you have this level of growth in mega-cap technology names, it isn't that important." "The primary challenge for investors at this point is dealing with a bifurcated market," DePorre said. "The Magnificent 7 names dominate the indexes, and there is still tremendous demand for these stocks. But they cover up any weakness in thousands of other names and in other areas of the market," he wrote. Microsoft has added about $300 billion in market cap after its earnings, he said, which is more than the value of 475 of the stocks in the S&P 500. Concentration in the AI giants is becoming even more extreme and greatly distorts what the average stock is doing. He said the business media do "a very poor job of distinguishing between the strength of the indexes and the health of the overall market."
