Pune: Koregaon Park police arrested Khanbaba, alias Madari Mohammed Khan, for performing black magic and cheating a 42-year-old woman from Kothrud of Rs 2.6 lakh on the pretext of helping her find a hidden treasure that would improve her financial condition.
Senior inspector Sunil Thopte of Koregaon Park police said, "The cheating occurred between June 12 and 15 this year. Khanbaba, a 65-year-old resident of Koregaon Park, promised to perform special prayers to help her obtain a 'hidden treasure'—a pot full of gold and other valuables—after the woman approached him seeking his help to improve her financial condition."
Thopte said, "After taking the money and performing some rituals, he gave her a pot wrapped in black cloth and instructed her to open it on the 17th day at 11.21pm.
When the woman opened the pot at the given time, she found only mud inside. Realising that she had been defrauded, she contacted Khanbaba."

"When the woman confronted him, he demanded more money and threatened to turn her into a goat using his supernatural powers if she failed to comply," Thopte said.
"The woman, a mother of two, was facing financial difficulties, and came in contact with Khanbaba through a common friend," Thopte added.
"Khanbaba continued to issue threats and harass her," he said.
"After the woman spoke to him on the phone, Khanbaba called her to his place on Wednesday evening. However, we had already set up a trap near his home and arrested him when the woman went to meet him," Thopte said.
Khanbaba was arrested under sections related to cheating and Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act.
He was produced before a city court, which remanded him in police custody till July 19.

Day after pickpocket was arrested after encounter, three of his aides also held

Lucknow: A day after a pickpocket was injured in a police encounter in Mahanagar area, police on Friday arrested three of his accomplices, all hardened criminals from Farrukhabad with bounties of ₹25,000 each on their heads. On Thursday, Kuldeep alias Bhela, 24, was shot in the leg during a chase after he and another suspect opened fire on police near Indiranagar Bridge. The incident occurred during a routine checking drive in the wake of rising street thefts. Despite his injury, Kuldeep was found clutching a loaded pistol. He was arrested and admitted to hospital, while one of his aides escaped. A day later, police nabbed three of his gang members — Neeraj alias Lambu (24), Pintu (34), and Prakash Chandra (46) — during a checking drive near Smriti Vatika. A black Pulsar bike, Rs 7,011 in cash, and three keypad phones were recovered from them. ACP, Mahanagar, Neha Tripathi, said the gang regularly travelled from Farrukhabad to Lucknow to target crowded markets like Bhoothnath and Aminabad, as well as railway and bus stations. Kuldeep confessed to stealing Rs 47,000 from a passer-by at Indira Nagar Bridge earlier this week. The gang's modus operandi involved stealing from moving vehicles and foot traffic in busy zones. If confronted, they did not hesitate to fire at police. Neeraj, one of the arrested men, has over 20 criminal cases registered against him across Lucknow, Kannauj, Agra, and Shahjahanpur.

Five arrested for bulk booking of online passes for Trimbakeshwar darshan and selling them at high rates

Nashik: Five people were arrested by Trimbakeshwar police for allegedly booking online paid darshan passes for Trimbakeshwar temple in large quantities and then selling them at exorbitant rates to pilgrims visiting the twelve jyotirlingas. Inspector Mahesh Kulkarni said an FIR was registered with the police on Thursday regarding some people purchasing Rs 200 denomination passes issued by Shri Trimbakeshwar Devasthan Trust in bulk and then selling them to the pilgrims at exorbitant rates. "An FIR was registered with the police regarding the sale of such online passes to the pilgrims at very high rates. The police investigated the matter and found that there were five people staying in and around Trimbakeshwar involved in the act and arrested them late Thursday night," said Kulkarni. The paid darshan passes are issued across the counter as well as through the online process. The officer said that the police tracked the tickets, mobile numbers, and email IDs that revealed the purchase of the darshan passes in bulk by a group of five people using fake names and Aadhaar numbers. "The passes carry the names of pass holders. These are verified by the QR scanner at the entrance. The sellers of these passes inform the pilgrims the names they need to tell the security persons at the gates, if they are asked," the officer said. Police have filed charges under Sections 318 (4), 112, and 336 (3) of BNS against the accused who sold them for Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 each. Police claimed that five people sold at least 1,648 passes and pocketed the proceeds without sharing them with the trust. The five arrested are Dileep Jhole and Sudam Badade, both residents of Pegalwadi, Samadhan Chothe and Manohar Shevare, both from Rokadwadi, and Shivraj Aher, residing near Niranjani Akhada -- all in and around Trimbakeshwar town.

Consumer court pulls up realty firms, orders compensation in two cases

Hyderabad: The district consumer disputes redressal commission, Ranga Reddy, has ruled in favour of consumers in two separate real estate disputes — one involving delayed possession of a flat, and another over returns promised on land-linked investments. In both cases, refunds and compensation were awarded. In the first case, Rajitha Guduru from Bachupalli deposited Rs 25 lakh in instalments with a real estate firm dealing in land ventures in Warangal. The company issued her certificates promising monthly returns on "undivided land shares", but no payments were made. Rajitha was never told where the land was or given proper documentation. Despite repeated follow-ups, they neither refunded money nor responded clearly, she told the commission. The complainant also alleged that she helped the firm by enrolling others into chit fund schemes tied to the same group. However, the commission found that the certificates lacked essential details like location, land extent, and transaction terms. Holding the firm guilty of misleading the consumer and collecting money without delivering on promises, the commission directed it to refund the Rs 25 lakh with 9% annual interest, pay Rs 50,000 for mental agony, and Rs 10,000 in legal costs. Other firms named were let off. In the second case, N Gayathri and her husband N Rajasekhar Reddy filed a complaint after two developers failed to hand over a flat in a Narsingi project. The couple paid Rs 36.9 lakh of the agreed Rs 68 lakh after signing a sale agreement in January 2022. However, the developers neither completed the flat nor responded to legal notices. With no appearance from the developers during the hearing, the commission set them ex-parte and ordered them to hand over the flat within three months after collecting the remaining amount. They were also directed to pay Rs 50,000 in compensation and Rs 10,000 towards litigation costs. These orders highlight how consumer courts are increasingly holding builders and investment firms accountable for delays, false promises, and lack of transparency in real estate transactions.
