Now 62, the actor is still considered one of the greatest young stars of all time with Pretty in Pink and Weekend at Bernie's also among his credits.
And while he might be a little more mature in appearance, Andrew McCarthy's charm still shines through in a new snap with his daughter Willow, 18, ahead of her prom.
He couldn't help but joke about one of his famous films, quipping, "she did not wear pink".
Willow, who is from Andrew's second marriage to writer Dolores Rice, made her dad beam with pride as they posed for the sweet snap.
Though the father and daughter duo are close, she has no interest in watching the films that made her dad a star.
Speaking to The Times last year, Andrew said, "Some of her friends told her to watch Pretty in Pink. But she saw a trailer and said, 'I don't want to watch you kissing some other person.' I think that's a perfectly appropriate response.'
Andrew and Dolores also have a son called Rowan, 11, while the actor has a son called Sam, 23, from his first marriage to college sweetheart Carol Schneider.
Back in 2013, he gushed about fatherhood in a blog post, writing, "Like most parents, I believe my children to be more dynamic, more charming, funnier, smarter, more perceptive and sensitive, more athletic, and more beautiful than other people's children.
'I love my children. At this moment they still adore us. It's a lovely time of life.'
Just days ago Andrew was in the UK where he managed to watch his fellow New Jersey native Bruce Springsteen play at Anfield Stadium, Liverpool.
He even managed to gab a selfie with The Boss backstage, topping off an unforgettable night.
Music lover Andrew was also over the moon to witness Beatle Sir Paul McCartney appearing as a guest in his hometown performing Can't Buy Me Love.
Last year he released the documentary Brats on Disney+, which revisited his fraught relationship with the Brat Pack.
The Pack - coined by a New York magazine article in 1985 - was a collection of young, talented and, in some cases, wild American stars of the era.
Among its ranks were Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Tom Cruise, Nicolas Cage, Sean Penn, Emilio Estevez and Matt Dillon.
Andrew made his feelings clear on the title, telling The Times: "Who wants to be called a brat? Who wants to be lumped into a pack? The public went, 'Oh my God, we love that!' Whereas the industry perceived it as a very negative indictment.'
At the same time his star was soaring, Andrew had an addiction to alcohol, which he eventually sought help for in 1992.

He began drinking when he was 12 and insists he'd have abused booze irrespective of his fame.
'I abused alcohol — that's no secret," he said. "I just got to drink better vodka because I was in the movies. It affected my career, and it took me several years to realise I had a problem.'
He's now been sober for 33 years.
Though he has landed roles consistently through the 90s and noughties, he hasn't recaptured the same level of fame that both blessed and cursed him in the 80s.
Notable recent roles on TV include Orange Is The New Black, 13 Reasons Why and Gossip Girl.

Jimmy Swaggart: Pioneer televangelist dies aged 90
Jimmy Swaggart - a pioneer of televangelism in the US - has died aged 90. Last month, the American Pentecostal preacher suffered a cardiac arrest at his home in Louisiana and was taken to a local hospital. His death was announced on Tuesday on his public Facebook page, though no cause of death was given. At one point, Mr Swaggart was the most famous TV evangelist in the US - preaching the word of God to millions of followers at home and abroad. But his vast audience dwindled when he was caught on camera with a prostitute in 1988. Mr Swaggart was serving as a co-pastor of the Family Worship Centre in Baton Rouge when he died. He was born in 1935 - and "after a dramatic salvation experience at the age of eight, felt the call of God on his life." According to his website: "He spent hours reading the Bible, praying, and, after a certain revival meeting, decided to ask God for the talent to play the piano." Mr Swaggart's first album, Some Golden Daybreak, was released in 1958. Since then, 17 million recordings have been sold. The Grammy-nominated pastor took up evangelistic work full-time in 1954 and was ordained by the Assemblies of God in 1961. He preached the gospel on TV for longer than any other American evangelist, according to his ministry's website. The Campmeeting Hour, Mr Swaggart's first radio programme, aired in 1969 - and within five years, the show was broadcasting on 700 radio stations in the US. His career in TV started in 1973 with the 30-minute weekly programme, The Jimmy Swaggart Evangelistic Association Presents Jimmy Swaggart, also known as the Jimmy Swaggart telecast. In 2010, Mr Swaggart launched the SonLife Broadcasting Network (SBN), a 24-hour Christian channel. Prostitute scandals He was defrocked by the Assemblies of God in 1988 after pictures surfaced of him with a prostitute. The pictures were handed in by rival TV evangelist Marvin Gorman, who was also defrocked after Mr Swaggart accused him of "immoral dalliances" in 1986. Following the scandal, Mr Swaggart delivered his famous "I have sinned" speech in front of a congregation of 7,000 in Baton Rouge, where he sobbed and asked for his wife's forgiveness, while falling short of detailing what his sin was. Mr Swaggart carried on as an independent Pentecostal preacher - but in 1991, he was found by police in California in the company of another prostitute after being stopped for a traffic violation.

Pete Davidson has revealed a family tragedy as he took the stage over the weekend, with the comedian opening up about his complicated feelings around his grandfather's health. The 31-year-old comedian performed at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Friday with Jon Stewart and John Mulaney as part of the North to Shore Festival. Pete explained that his grandfather has emphysema, a chronic lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe, and told the audience that he hopes his grandpa 'f**king rots.' He added that it's a 'tough' situation because he wants 'to be there' for his mom, but, deep down, he's 'so stoked' about his grandfather's impending death. 'I don't want to be rude to my mom. I think I have the best mom in the world. I'm very, very lucky. So I've been trying to remember a good time that me and my grandpa had so I could hold onto it,' he said. The SNL alum went on to share a childhood story with the crowd to touch base on a 'few positive experiences' he's had with his grandfather growing up, including an inside joke they shared about their enjoyment over a popular online entertainer, 'cake fart girl.' He ended his story reiterating that his grandfather is 'going to die soon.' A source close to Pete told Daily Mail, 'Pete loves his family and like most family dynamics, his is just as complicated. 'He normally opens up about his upbringing during his standup and like all comedians, he pushes boundaries. This joke, specifically, was made in jest.' Pete suffered a well-known tragedy in the past when his father, Scott Davidson, died during the horrific September 11th attacks as he was working as a FDNY firefighter. 'I used to be a drug addict, and I was a sad person, and I felt ugly and that I needed to be covered up,' he previously confessed to Variety. 'And I don't think there's anything wrong with tattoos, but mine, when I look at them, I remember a sad person that was very unsure. 'So I'm just removing them and starting fresh because that's what I think works best for me and for my brain. When I look in the mirror, I don't want the reminder of "Oh yeah, you were a f**king drug addict. Like, that's why you have SpongeBob smoking a joint on your back." They should have meaning.' In July 2024, he checked into a wellness facility to seek mental health treatment. While not much was revealed at the time, he admitted to still using marijuana, after quitting both cocaine and ketamine use, shortly before he entered treatment. He appears to be doing well after starting a new relationship with Elsie, a 29-year-old model who has shared rare photos of the two of them together on social media. The pair made their red carpet debut in New York City last month at the 13th Annual Blossom Ball, where Elsie was open about her fight with endometriosis. The outspoken 'endo warrior' told Daily Mail that she was feeling much better after undergoing treatment for the condition that causes severe pain in the pelvis area.
