Ecuador Inaugurates Its Embassy in Rabat
In an address delivered during the ceremony, Bourita said the inauguration follows Ecuador's historic decision to sever all ties with the so-called 'sadr' on October 22, 2024, and to further strengthen its relations with the Kingdom of Morocco.
He highlighted that Morocco is home to 165 diplomatic missions, including 50 representations of international organizations. With 14 Latin American embassies now established in Rabat, Morocco is well-positioned to serve as a 'bridge' between Latin America and Africa, offering unique advantages—cultural, geographic, and strategic. This growing diplomatic presence, he added, reflects the importance Morocco attaches to its ties with Latin America within the framework of its foreign policy.
The emerging 'win-win' partnership between Morocco and Ecuador aims to set an example of effective and solidarity-based South-South cooperation, Bourita stressed, emphasizing that the two countries are committed to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, aspiring to build a strong and dynamic South-South partnership that serves the shared interests of their peoples.
On this occasion, Bourita also congratulated the Government of Ecuador on the appointment of an ambassador to lead its diplomatic mission in Morocco.
For her part, Sommerfeld stated that the opening of the embassy marks the beginning of a new era of dynamism in Morocco-Ecuador cooperation. She reaffirmed her country's commitment to deepening bilateral relations, strengthening ties across strategic sectors, and facilitating the exchange of expertise in various fields.
She pointed out that this is Ecuador's first diplomatic mission in the Maghreb region.
Sommerfeld added that the embassy in Rabat is intended to serve as a 'gateway to African markets' and reflects her government's determination to elevate bilateral cooperation with Morocco.
The inauguration took place following talks between Bourita and Sommerfeld, during which the Ecuadorian foreign minister reiterated her country's support for the Autonomy Initiative presented by Morocco in 2007, which Ecuador views as the basis for a lasting solution to this regional dispute.

During her visit to Morocco last year, Ms. Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, engaged in meaningful discussions focused on child welfare and the Foundation's initiatives aimed at enhancing support services for children. This year, cultural ties were further deepened by the visit of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, President of the Rabat Heritage Preservation Foundation, who attended the International Carpet Festival in Baku as its honorary guest. The organization of the Rabat Carpet Art Exhibition at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum was a vivid reflection of the growing cultural affinity between the two nations. Her Royal Highness was warmly received by H.E. Mehriban Aliyeva, First Lady and Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, underscoring the strong bond between our countries through high-level cultural engagement. Education exchanges, including the visits of Azerbaijani university delegations to Morocco and Moroccan students benefitting from Azerbaijani government scholarships, have further strengthened people-to-people connectivity. The common membership in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Non-Aligned Movement provides a solid multilateral platform for coordination. Both countries advocate for a fairer global order, support dialogue among nations, and emphasize the importance of cultural heritage, and development-oriented partnerships. A strong foundation of trust and shared values As Azerbaijan prepares to host the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in 2026, Morocco — a leading country in urban planning and sustainability — will be one of the stakeholders and partners in this globally significant event. Looking ahead, the future of Azerbaijan–Morocco relations rests on a strong foundation of trust, respect, and shared values. By investing in youth exchange, green energy cooperation, digital transformation, and regional connectivity, both countries can transform their bilateral agenda into a broader platform for Afro-Eurasian dialogue and prosperity. Germany Renews Commitment to Strengthen Bilateral Ties, Cooperation with Morocco
Rabat – German Foreign Affairs Minister Johann David Wadephul commended cooperation and bilateral ties with Morocco in a phone call with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, on Monday. The call, the first of its kind between Wadephul and Bourita, served as an opportunity for both Berlin and Rabat to emphasize the importance of bilateral ties between the two countries and reaffirm their commitment to strengthened relations. Both ministers also expressed a desire to see their relationship grow at all levels, with the German minister satisfied with cooperation between Rabat and Berlin in various fields like economy, energy, and employment. Bourita and Wadephul also confirmed their intention to continue the strategic dialogue that the two countries established as part of a Joint Declaration in 2022. The next dialogue session will take place in Rabat, they announced. Germany is one of the growing list of EU countries that view Morocco's Autonomy Plan as a serious and credible basis to end the dispute over Western Sahara. The newfound position came after a period of brief tension between Rabat and Berlin after Morocco recalled its ambassador from Germany in May 2021, two months after the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the suspension of all contacts with the German embassy in Rabat. The ministry said back then that the decision was due to Germany's 'exacerbated hostile acts' against Moroccan interests, particularly the country's sovereignty over its southern provinces. In December 2021, the German Foreign Ministry released a press statement expressing support for Morocco's efforts in the UN-led political process to find a political solution to end the dispute. It also asserted that the autonomy initiative is an 'important contribution to efforts to end the dispute.' The German government has long emphasized the importance of bilateral ties between the two countries. This cooperation covers several areas, like security, migration, as well as innovation, and climate change. According to data from the German Federal Foreign Office, Germany and Morocco enjoy significant economic and trade ties. 'Germany is currently Morocco's sixth-largest trading partner,' the office said, noting that imports from Morocco amounted to over €3.2 billion, and exports to Morocco totaled € 3.5 billion last year. About 300 German companies are operating in Morocco, creating 35,000 jobs in the North African country. Beyond trade, Morocco is one of the premier tourist destinations for Germans. Morocco Reelected Member of FAO Council in Rome
Morocco was re-elected on Friday in Rome as a member of the Council of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for a new term covering the period from July 1, 2026, until the end of the 46th session of the FAO Conference, scheduled for 2029. This re-election, represented by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the UN agencies in Rome, Youssef Balla, took place during the 44th session of the FAO Conference, held in Rome from June 28 to July 4. Morocco has been one of the 12 countries representing the Africa region on the Council since June 30, 2023. The Kingdom was initially set to complete its current term on the Council on June 30, 2026. However, the renewed confidence of African member states earned it a new term, reflecting their recognition of Morocco's ongoing commitment to food security, sustainable agricultural development, and South-South cooperation across the African continent. Composed of 49 members, the Council is the executive body of the FAO Conference, responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Organization's activities between its plenary sessions.
