PAM Leadership Receives Jacob Zuma
Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, coordinator of PAM's collective leadership, which also includes Minister of Culture Mohamed Mehdi Bensaïd, met with Zuma to discuss prospects for strengthening cooperation and partnership between the two political formations and their respective countries on various matters of mutual interest. Speaking to the press following the meeting, Zuma described the talks with PAM officials as 'fruitful and forward-looking,' highlighting the leading roles Morocco and South Africa can play in advancing development across the African continent. Zuma also commended Morocco's economic progress, describing the country as one of the most dynamic economies on the continent. He further emphasized the need for African countries to unite, take ownership of their development and destiny, and fully leverage their resources free from foreign interference. Zuma stressed the importance of engaging younger generations in shaping Africa's future, noting that the two parties agreed to exchange visits and establish a platform for dialogue and consultation on issues of shared concern. In a similar statement, El Mansouri said the meeting formed part of parallel diplomacy efforts aimed at bolstering cooperative ties, particularly with countries in southern Africa. She noted that the approach aligns with the far-sighted vision of King Mohammed VI to strengthen South-South cooperation as a strategic choice for the Kingdom, to build a shared future based on cooperation, solidarity, and integration among peoples. El Mansouri also noted that the position expressed by Zuma's party in support of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara represents a major boost to joint efforts between the two countries and their respective political forces. Earlier in the week, following his talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita, Zuma said his party considers Morocco's autonomy plan 'a pathway to meaningful local governance for the populations of the Sahara region, while preserving Morocco's sovereignty over the territory.' FM Holds Several Bilateral Meetings During EU-Southern Neighbourhood Ministerial Meeting
Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, held, on Monday in Brussels, a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of his participation in the 5th EU-Southern Neighbourhood Ministerial Meeting. The minister, accompanied mainly by Morocco's ambassador and permanent representative to the EU, Ahmed Reda Chami, held talks with the European Commissioner for Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, discussing the means of strengthening the partnership between Morocco and the EU. The meeting focused on Morocco's commitment to the New Pact for the Mediterranean, designed to provide fresh impetus to the partnership between the two shores of the Mediterranean, as part of the EU's neighbourhood policy. Bourita also held talks with the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, where the two officials discussed the strategic partnership between Morocco and the EU, as well as various regional and international issues of common interest. Subsequently, Bourita held talks with the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, with whom he reviewed bilateral cooperation ties and examined ways of developing them further, within the framework of constant dialogue and consultation between the two countries. Bourita also held talks with several of his peers on the sidelines of the Ministerial Meeting, mainly including the foreign ministers of Jordan, Egypt and Slovenia. The 5th EU-Southern Neighbourhood Ministerial Meeting aims to exchange perspectives on the New Pact for the Mediterranean, which is set to be presented in the next fall, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Declaration. Ecuador Inaugurates Its Embassy in Rabat
Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld, inaugurated the Embassy of the Republic of Ecuador in Rabat on Friday. In an address delivered during the ceremony, Bourita said the inauguration follows Ecuador's historic decision to sever all ties with the so-called 'sadr' on October 22, 2024, and to further strengthen its relations with the Kingdom of Morocco. He highlighted that Morocco is home to 165 diplomatic missions, including 50 representations of international organizations. With 14 Latin American embassies now established in Rabat, Morocco is well-positioned to serve as a 'bridge' between Latin America and Africa, offering unique advantages—cultural, geographic, and strategic. This growing diplomatic presence, he added, reflects the importance Morocco attaches to its ties with Latin America within the framework of its foreign policy. The emerging 'win-win' partnership between Morocco and Ecuador aims to set an example of effective and solidarity-based South-South cooperation, Bourita stressed, emphasizing that the two countries are committed to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, aspiring to build a strong and dynamic South-South partnership that serves the shared interests of their peoples. On this occasion, Bourita also congratulated the Government of Ecuador on the appointment of an ambassador to lead its diplomatic mission in Morocco. For her part, Sommerfeld stated that the opening of the embassy marks the beginning of a new era of dynamism in Morocco-Ecuador cooperation. She reaffirmed her country's commitment to deepening bilateral relations, strengthening ties across strategic sectors, and facilitating the exchange of expertise in various fields. She pointed out that this is Ecuador's first diplomatic mission in the Maghreb region. Sommerfeld added that the embassy in Rabat is intended to serve as a 'gateway to African markets' and reflects her government's determination to elevate bilateral cooperation with Morocco. The inauguration took place following talks between Bourita and Sommerfeld, during which the Ecuadorian foreign minister reiterated her country's support for the Autonomy Initiative presented by Morocco in 2007, which Ecuador views as the basis for a lasting solution to this regional dispute. Morocco Revamps Consular Network with 22 Strategic Appointments
Cologne – Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates has appointed 22 new Consuls General across key international posts. This shift, described as one of the most important in recent years, touches over a third of the country's consular network and aims to reinforce ties with Moroccan communities abroad through stronger, more responsive institutions. The decision reflects a broader push for modern, citizen-focused diplomacy. These appointments go beyond routine administrative changes. They suggest a new phase in Morocco's outreach to its diaspora, one built on competence, proximity, and a renewed sense of public service. The appointments cover some of the most vital destinations for Moroccan nationals. 13 new Consuls General now represent Morocco in France, the country with the largest Moroccan community abroad. Italy accounts for three more, while Spain and Belgium each see new leadership in select consulates. The ministry also chose to strengthen its presence in North America by assigning a new Consul General to New York. This focused redeployment touches the regions where Moroccans abroad most often seek assistance, guidance, and institutional support. Women at the helm For the first time, nearly half of the newly appointed Consuls General are women, 10 out of 22. This decision raises the percentage of women leading Moroccan consulates to 38%, a notable step in the ministry's pursuit of equal opportunity and recognition of talent. Rather than token appointments, these selections highlight experienced professionals whose profiles combine merit, service, and leadership. Among the 22 appointees, 11 will take on the role of Consul General for the first time. All have earned their place through years of service within the Ministry or Morocco's broader diplomatic corps. Seven others are transferring to new locations, while four return to consular duties after previous experience in the post. The ministry aims to preserve institutional memory while introducing fresh perspectives, a necessary combination for adapting to today's challenges. The profiles chosen for this wave of appointments reveal the message that Morocco expects more from its consulates. Many of the new officials possess a dual background in diplomacy and consular affairs, aligning with an expanded mission that includes citizen protection, cultural outreach, and economic cooperation. This transformation of Morocco's consular map confirms a deeper strategy, indicating that the country remains committed to a diplomacy grounded in the daily lives of its citizens, not detached from them. By entrusting these 22 officials with the responsibility of representing Morocco abroad, the North African country affirms its belief that public service, when driven by competence and conscience, can become a bridge between nations and citizens.
