Hugo Keenan, Blair Kinghorn and Ben White set for Lions debuts

Times3 days ago
Hugo Keenan, Blair Kinghorn and Ben White will all make their British & Irish Lions debuts against the NSW Waratahs in Sydney on Saturday, captained by Irishman Tadhg Beirne.
Keenan was meant to start in Brisbane against the Queensland Reds on Wednesday but fell ill. Elliot Daly came in for him at the last minute but broke his arm and has gone home.
Keenan has recovered to wear the No15 jersey for the Waratahs match, with Kinghorn named on the left wing — his position for Toulouse. Kinghorn arrived from Paris, having won the Top14 final last Saturday.
Henry Pollock comes in to play No6 in a dynamic back-row alongside Ben Earl, at No8, and Josh van der Flier at openside flanker. Pollock has now started in all three back-row jerseys on this tour, proving his versatility.
Ben White, who was an injury replacement for Tomos Williams, who was sent home after tearing his hamstring against the Western Force, makes the bench for the first time. Andy Farrell, the head coach, has gone for a 6-2 split among the substitutes with Marcus Smith the only other back.
In the starting team Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith pair at half-back, with Scottish centres Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones at centre for the first time together. Mack Hansen completes the back-three with Kinghorn and Keenan.
In the forwards Pierre Schoeman lines up with Luke Cowan-Dickie and Finlay Bealham, with captain Beirne pairing at lock with James Ryan — who makes his first start.
'Congratulations to Tadhg who will lead the side on Saturday night — and also to Blair, Hugo and Ben who will all make their Lions debuts,' Farrell said. 'The games are coming thick and fast now as we face a Waratahs side who will want to make their mark.'

Aussie tennis star Alex De Minaur sets up blockbuster against seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic

Alex de Minaur has booked the dream Wimbledon clash with Novak Djokovic that he's been yearning for 12 months, declaring his joy at finally earning a crack at 'the ultimate challenge'. A year since his hopes of meeting the seven-time champion in the quarter-final were cruelly dashed by injury, Australia's main man has been left thrilled to finally land his big shot in a last-16 blockbuster set for a Centre Court slot. De Minaur reckoned he had been forced to bring his best tennis to get past an 'extremely dangerous' third-round opponent, Danish qualifier August Holmgren 6-4 7-6 (7-5) 6-3, in a hugely entertaining Saturday afternoon clash. But he's now pumped up for a fourth-round duel with the great sixth seed Djokovic, who looked in ominously supreme form as he breezed past Serbian compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3 6-0 6-4 for his landmark 100th Wimbledon singles triumph. De Minaur and Jordan Thompson are now the last two Aussies standing out of the 17 original starters after women's No.1 Daria Kasatkina had bowed out earlier, beaten, somewhat ironically, by former Russian teammate Liudmila Samsonova 6-2 6-3. 'It's funny how life works. It was a brutal time for me last year having to deal with all of those emotions, but here we are a year later feeling good, ready to go, and I'm going to get my chance again,' said de Minaur. 'Now I'm getting to play Novak on one of his favourite, if not his favourite, surfaces and his favourite tournament. So it's going to be the ultimate challenge, and I'm excited for it.' Twelve months ago, 'Demon' had been in spectacular form when right at the end of his victory over Frenchman Arthur Fils in the fourth round , he suffered the season-compromising hip injury that prevented him meeting the 24-time grand slam champ in the last-eight. But the 26-year-old is looking sharper again since a refreshing break, evidenced by how he finally ended the fairytale of Holmgren, who had saved three match points in his final qualifying match and three more in his second-round victory over 21st seed Tomas Machac. No.11 seed de Minaur may have been a bit worried about the drama of tackling little-known world No.192, a US university graduate in theatre arts and performance studies who serves big, attacks boldly and whose run has been like something compatriot Hans Christian Andersen might have penned. Armed with a serve that delivered 61 aces throughout the Championships, he played with real swagger and came up with what de Minaur called 'clutch tennis'. 'He's got an unbelievable serve, a great forehand. He takes the racquet out of your hand, and when he's playing with a lot of confidence, it makes a very tricky opponent. I had to bring some of my best tennis, especially in those tough moments. He's had a hell of a tournament.' 'Demon' broke just the once in the opener at 4-4 and the prospect of Holmgren levelling up in the second was very much alive as they contested a tight second-set tiebreak until de Minaur got lucky with a serve that kicked up off the chalk to earn set point and Holmgren then produced a deflating double fault. Somewhat relieved, de Minaur looked to have got his man, and another double from Holmgren gave him the key break for 4-2 before he went on to seal victory in two hours 21 minutes. But Kasatkina's dream of a barnstorming run in her first Wimbledon in Australian colours was shattered as she delivered a flat display against the big-hitting 19th seed Samsonova, her teammate in Russia's Billie Jean King Cup-winning outfit back in 2021, in a rain-interrupted affair. It was a fairly tame and deflating end with 16th seed Kasatkina suffering the same fate against the rising 26-year-old Samsonova that young Australian star Maya Joint had endured in the opening round. Not even a two-hour rain break when she was a set and 2-0 down could revive Kasatkina's fortunes as she succumbed in just over and hour and a quarter, sunk by 22 blistering winners from her old colleague. 'Of course, I think I could do better on my side, but I also have to give her credit, she played a very, very good match,' said Kasatkina, who'll be making her first visit to Australia since being granted permanent citizenship in the next few days.

George Ford marks 100th Test cap by leading England to victory against Argentina

England recovered from two first-half sin-bins to down Argentina by a 35-12 score with Test centurion George Ford kicking 15 points. Alex Coles and debutant Seb Atkinson were shown yellow cards by referee Angus Gardner to temporary reduce Steve Borthwick's team to 13 men in La Plata, but after a superb regard defensive action, England were much improved after the break. Tom Roebuck grabbed a first try within two minutes of the restart and added another after Freddie Steward crossed over. Caden Murley concluded the scoring with five minutes left on a night where co-captain Ford showed his class on his 100th appearance for England. All eyes were on Ford initially, but it was scrum-half Ben Spencer who did most of the kicking early on with a number of box kicks as Argentina dominated territory. Infringements were a regular occurrence from England and Coles was first to be sent to the sin-bin for a head-on-head contact with Facundo Isa. It was followed by rock-solid English defence led by co-captain Jamie George and after Santiago Carreras missed a simple penalty for Argentina, Ford landed a drop goal to conjure memories of his virtuoso display in the 2023 World Cup group stage. Atkinson followed Coles in being shown a yellow following a succession of team offsides, which reduced England to 13 men. However, George again starred to keep Argentina at bay and while Ford missed another drop goal effort, it remained 3-0 at half-time. England started the second period with better intent and needed only 65 seconds to score the first try of the match. A fine carry by Ben Curry was followed by quick ball from Ford and Steward, who found Sale wing Roebuck and he crashed over on the right. Ford failed to add the extras, but quickly made amends with a superb pass to release his former Leicester team-mate Steward for England's second try. This time Ford kicked the conversion and the purple patch continued as Roebuck grabbed another in the 49th minute. After being stopped just short of the try-line after a free-flowing move, Roebuck made no mistake second time around to help England move 22-0 ahead. Pablo Matera helped Argentina to produce an instant response and when Pedro Rubiolo finished off a superb team attack minutes later, the momentum had suddenly shifted. Borthwick turned to his bench as Guy Pepper was introduced for his Test debut, but fittingly it was Ford who took charge on his 100th international outing with two inch-perfect penalties – the second from near the halfway line. Harlequins wing Murley entered the fray with eight minutes later and wrapped up the scoring with an excellent finish before Ford kicked his third conversion to help England begin their summer tour in style.

Ford drives depleted England to surprise win over Argentina

LA PLATA, Argentina, July 5 (Reuters) - England winger Tom Roebuck scored two tries and veteran flyhalf George Ford delivered a virtuoso performance in a 35-12 win over Argentina in the first test in La Plata on Saturday. Freddie Steward and substitute Cadan Murley also touched down as 32-year-old Ford, celebrating his 100th cap, kicked two penalties, a drop goal and three conversions. With 14 internationals away on British & Irish Lions duty in Australia, a depleted England side started as underdogs against the Pumas, who beat the Lions in Dublin two weeks ago. A gutsy defensive display, however, was complimented by Ford's astute leadership in a performance that will add to the debate over whether he, rather than Owen Farrell, should been called up as a Lions' injury replacement. England showed resolute defence in the first half, three times holding up the ball to deny Argentina tries as the hosts crossed the visitors' goal line but could not dot down. Yellow cards for lock Alex Coles and debutant Seb Atkinson within six minutes left England down to 13 men but despite this disadvantage, they took the lead from their first foray into Argentina territory when Ford sent over a 20th-minute drop kick for the only points of the first half. After the break, England went on the attack and scored three tries in the first 10 minutes of the second half to build a commanding 22-0 lead, to a cacophony of jeers for the home side from their supporters. Roebuck, in only his second international, went over in the corner one minute into the second half, followed four minutes later by a try for Steward on his return to the England line-up as Ford's pass allowed him to burst through a gap in the home defence. Roebuck strolled in for his second try after Ford again pulled the strings in a simple move down the line. The jeers turned to cheers of hope as Argentina attempted a fightback with a 53rd-minute try for veteran flanker Pablo Matera, marking a record-equalling 110th appearance for the Pumas, and a forward inspired break finished off by lock Pedro Rubiolo. That reduced the deficit to 10 points but Argentine mistakes handed England penalties at key moments and Ford slotted over two penalties to keep the tourists' comfortably ahead before Murley's late try made sure of victory. The second test is next Saturday in San Juan.
