Huge ITV drama ‘facing axe' dealt fresh blow as creator quits after he's slammed for woke storylines
First, lead Nicola Walker was replaced in 2023, then this year's series was criticised for its woke storylines.

Now Chris Lang, the brains behind the ITV thriller, says he wants to quit as writer after next year's run.
He said: 'I'll probably hand on the baton after this series. I'll still be involved, but I've written 42 episodes and don't want to repeat myself.'
In an interview with the Royal Television Society, Chris added: 'I wouldn't write it if I didn't have something to say about the state of the nation.
'Because Unforgotten has an inherent and robust structure, that allows me space to hold up a mirror to British society — it's a Trojan horse show.'
But the show, which also stars Sanjeev Bhaskar as DI Sunil Khan, has been slammed by some viewers for those 'Trojan horse' storylines that deal with themes including immigration, racism and the Covid crisis.
Taking to X, one remarked: 'I reckon one more series and this show will get mothballed or even fully axed. Unfortunately this one is a real box-ticking leftie crowd-pleaser.'
Another posted: 'The woke mind virus has even taken hold of #Unforgotten'
Another added: '#Unforgotten is forgettable. Another drama has gone woke.'
A fourth said: '#itv how many woke boxes did you tick in that first episode? Lecturing your audience is so tedious.'
Yet another stated: 'Given up on this load of woke garbage, supposed to be entertainment not propaganda.'
Unforgotten star reveals surprise real-life family link to storyline - as hit ITV crime drama returns
The first episode of last series, which aired in February, peaked at 7.4million viewers, making it the second highest-performing drama of last year.
Chris also said that many viewers still hadn't forgiven the show for losing Nicola, who played DCI Cassie Stuart and replacing her with Sinead Keenan as new department chief, DCI Jessica James.
He recalled how he was with his wife on holiday last year and met some American fans who were initially thrilled to discover Chris had written the show.
But he said: 'The mood suddenly soured. One of the women went full Kathy Bates and said, 'You killed Nicola Walker!'.
Here's hoping he hasn't killed off the whole show, too.
WOULD I FLY TO YOU?

HERE'S the first look at Rob Brydon as he launches Destination X, the BBC's brilliant new challenge show.
Smartly dressed as a pilot, the Would I Lie To You? host can be seen getting the first nail-biting trial under way in the series that is part Traitors and part Race Across The World.
And the contestants are in for a wild ride.
The show, which launches later this month, sees them board a blacked-out bus where they are fed clues – and a few nasty red herrings – with one simple question at the end of each episode: Where in Europe are you?
A £100,000 prize awaits the winner.
But with the amount of Euro facts we'll all learn along the way, I reckon some of us will win big at the next pub quiz too.
GLAD SPIN-OFF IS BACK
THE Gladiators spin-off prank show proved such a hit with viewers it's back for a second series.
I can reveal it will be shot when the lycra-clad muscle men and women convene this month to film the conventional show for BBC One.
Gladiators: Epic Pranks is aimed at youngsters and sees the likes of Phantom and Giant playing tricks on one another, and members of the public, for the sadistic amusement of viewers.
There will also be the celebrity spin-off, which usually airs around Christmas, at the same time as the regular show.
But the names of the stars taking part have yet to be revealed.
Watch this space . . .
IT'S A FULL HOUSE IN LONDON
MOST of you probably thought The Real Housewives Of London would be a bunch of filthy rich women carping at each other while gorging on various luxuries in the capital.
Well, you're wrong – because they also go to Scotland.

Everything else is true, however, which is pretty evident in the trailer which has just been released ahead of the new show streaming on Hayu from August 18.
It's like a game of posh princess bingo, with mentions of diamond bracelets, facelifts, caviar, castles – and, of course, oodles of money.
Some of the interactions between the warring women are a delight.
In the trailer, one tells another: 'You're just a chronic liar and an insecure tw*t!'
Another tells a rival: 'You're a f***ing bitch, a low life and mutton dressed as lamb.'
Can. Not. Wait.

Some of the biggest shows on Disney+ are now available to stream totally free
A selection of popular Disney Plus shows are now available to stream for free, including Pam & Tommy, Star Wars: Andor and Desperate Housewives A collection of hit Disney Plus titles have been made available to stream for free, including Desperate Housewives and Andor. The streaming services has teamed up with ITVX in a one-of-a-kind collaboration which sees the services join forces to make a number of shows and films available across both platforms. ITVX viewers will be able to access a large assortment of Disney Plus content, titled Taste of Disney+, from 16th July. The selection is due to grow over the coming months, with titles such as The Bear being added. 12 Disney Plus titles were added to ITVX on Wednesday, making them available to stream for any ITVX user. Meanwhile, Disney Plus users in the UK are now able to stream a selection of ITV content on the platform. This is under the title Taste of ITVX and comes at no extra cost to users. ITV shows now available on the streaming service include Mr Bates vs the Post Office, Love Island, Vera and Endeavour. The agreement between ITVX and Disney Plus builds on an already existing deal between the two streaming services, as Disney's Renegade Nell is already on the platform. Kevin Lygo, managing director of media and entertainment at ITV said: "For us, this deal means even more great content for viewers on ITVX, and even more opportunity for viewers to find and enjoy our distinctive titles and services." Meanwhile, Disney Plus EMEA general manager Karl Holmes shared with Broadcast last month: "ITVX skews relatively old, and our heartland is under-55s. One of the challenges we have is that our brands are strong, but if you're older you think that Disney's about family and kids. "At the same time, we get some of the UK's biggest shows to put in front of our audiences – which are less exposed to traditional free-to-air content. That's great for engagement." Danny Dyer reveals he ran 'stark NAKED' through a council estate while filming for the new series of Mr. Bigstuff - and locals couldn't believe their eyes
Danny Dyer has revealed he left locals wide-eyed in shock when he ran through a council estate 'stark naked' while filming Mr. Bigstuff. After the success of its first series, the second instalment of the Sky comedy-drama is set to hit our screens later this year. The show follows two estranged and rather contrasting brothers, Glen (Ryan Sampson) and Lee (Danny Dyer), as they discover that their father, who they thought was dead, is actually alive. But during filming for the show's second series, which has now finished, Danny was asked to do something not many actors have done before - run through a British council estate fully nude. He and his co-star Ryan told Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston about the hilarious scene on Wednesday during an appearance on Heart Breakfast. Ryan explained: 'So, series two, end of the first episode, it got quite a visceral... Shall we say a full-frontal moment?', before Danny revealed: 'Nudity.' Ryan continued: 'There's a full-frontal moment, and it's in a public place as well. And I wasn't sure whether Danny would to do it or whatever, but he's completely up for it.' 'It's a scene where I'm running through a council estate, yeah, stark naked,' Dyer quipped. 'I read it, I laughed. I thought you know, "it's got to be done". The first ep is about Lee, he's been emasculated. So he's just moping about all day, so irritated. 'He needs to find his mojo, I was going to say his plums!,' the former EastEnders actor laughed. 'Anyways, so there's this amazing scene at the end where I'm sort of chasing someone down the street, and I've got a towel, and I take the towel off, and I use it as some sort of lasso. 'I mean, you're sort of reading it going, "How on Earth are we going to do this?"' Ryan went onto describe the moment Danny whipped off the towel and sprinted through the estate, with a local even spotting him as he did so. 'Like, I thought we were going to shut the road down or something. Actually, nope. It's just a real suburban street! 'So, I'm stood at the other end of the street and he's running, and there's this man on his phone. Danny is running down, and this man goes - he's outside the house - and he goes on a phone, "Sorry babe, I'm going to have to get back to you, because there's a man running down the street naked, and I'm not being funny, he looks like Mick from EastEnders".' Danny played Mick, who owned the Queen Victoria pub in the popular BBC soap, for a nine-year period beginning in 2013. Elsewhere in the interview, Danny opened up about his daughter Dani Dyer's wedding to West Ham United footballer Jarrod Bowen, calling it 'the best day of his life'. The celebrity couple tied the knot in a 'Bridgerton-themed' wedding on May 31 at the plush £500-a-night Langley Hotel in Iver, Buckinghamshire. Dani wowed on the occasion in a £10,000 off-the-shoulder dress created by the award-winning wedding dress designer Suzanne Neville. Jarrod - who wiped away tears as Danny walked his daughter towards the alter - wore a three-piece black suit for the ceremony. Danny, a lifelong Hammers supporter, has regularly gushed about the fact his daughter's seeing his favourite footballer. And he amusingly told Amanda and Jamie that on Dani's wedding day he gave her away to the 'man of his dreams'. Speaking about the wedding, he told the hosts: 'I was in pieces, darling. 'The best day of my life. Honestly, it was just so beautiful. 'I managed, you know, to give my daughter away to the man of my dreams - I don't think that's ever happened in the history of any father giving their daughter away! 'So it was the perfect day. Let me tell you that now, it was just beautiful.'
