Rolls-Royce Celebrates 100 Years Of Craftsmanship In Colorado Springs

Forbes10-06-2025
Colorado Springs isn't Paris or London, but for one slow, high-altitude week, it crackled with elegance and low-octane nostalgia as Rolls-Royce Motor Cars North America hosted the 2025 Owners' Club Annual Meet.
Rolls-Royce Ghost series

Over 75 motorcars showed up—each one a nod to the past or a wink from the future—drawing a line from the original Silver Ghosts to the gleaming beasts of today. For one glittery, immaculate week, it became the holy ground for chrome, leather, and the low, slow hum of a century's worth of Rolls-Royces
They came from all corners, these Ghosts and Phantoms, to celebrate something no one dares say out loud anymore: permanence.

The Ghost Series II and Cullinan Series II made their first North American showing, parked in reverence beside their ancestors. A 2025 Phantom, the eighth in its bloodline, stood regally beside a Phantom I and Phantom III, like an oil painting brought to life.
You didn't need a museum in this case. The museum was right in front of you.
'Seventy percent of Rolls-Royce commissions are still on the road,' said Jon Colbeth, President & CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars North America in a statement. 'That's not luck. That's legacy.'

The new Ghost, with its 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12, satellite-aided transmission, and Planar Suspension System, glides like it knows where it's going—even if you don't. Inside, it's stitched with 2.2 million threads and a Spirit of Ecstasy clock ticking in a hush. Meanwhile, the Cullinan Series II rolled in with 23-inch wheels and a glowing fascia of city lights, claiming SUV dominance without ever raising its voice.
They're machines, sure. But they're also monuments.
Rolls-Royce 100-year anniversary

The Phantom, now 100 years old, wasn't just a car on display—it was an altar. This wasn't a dealership display, luring possible new customers. From Charles Rolls and Henry Royce in 1904 to these tech-rich titans today, the message hasn't changed - this is the top. Even a ride to the supermarket is an event.
You could feel it in the dry mountain air—that quiet hum of purpose, of time passing through a V12. Each car a cathedral.
Despite being slightly under the weather at this gathering, two rides knocked me out of the proverbial park during a quick ride up to (almost) the top of Pikes Peak.

It may, of course, seem childish, but 'I liked the purple one.' The Cullinan, that is. We took a spirited drive up the mountain, stepping on the corners where safe and waving at the folks in their Jeeps and 4Runners by the side of the road, who gaped. The drive was only 15 minutes, but wow. Here are some things to know about both rides. One doesn't want to dwell on price, but at the same time it's what people want to know, so here it is.

I didn't get behind the wheel of the other Rolls I saw that knocked me out - the Ghost Black Badge - but I did ride in the back. The entire inside was a bright, vivid blue, as blue as Sinatra's eyes except a bit more 'brightness and saturation.' It was the perfect balance of deep, rich color, but not sickly sweet.

CC Sabathia's car breaks down on way to Cooperstown for Baseball Hall of Fame induction

CC Sabathia's 19-year Major League ride toward baseball's Hall of Fame appears to have been a smoother one than the actual drive he made to Cooperstown for this weekend's induction. Heading to Cooperstown with his family for Sunday's festivities, Sabathia's car apparently broke down on the side of the highway, leaving the New York Yankees great and his family temporarily stranded. Sabathia posted a photo (with laughing emojis) on X, formerly Twitter, of himself, his wife Amber and their children on July 24 at 8:22 p.m. Sabathia posted the words: 'Car broke down on the way to Cooperstown. Anyone headed that way?' The road sign in the photo showed Route 17 West in upstate New York. Sabathia later posted at 11:02 p.m. that he and his family made it to Cooperstown: And on Friday, July 25 at 10:47 a.m., Sabathia posted a photo of the Cooperstown grounds where he will be speaking Sunday: This article originally appeared on CC Sabathia car breaks down on way to Cooperstown for Hall of Fame induction

Lyft to add autonomous shuttles in 2026 as Uber inks more self-driving deals

Lyft will add autonomous shuttles made by Austrian manufacturer Benteler Group to its network in late 2026, the company announced Friday. The shuttles will be deployed in partnership with U.S. cities and airports, according to Lyft, but could expand out from there if things go well. The partnership will let Lyft use urban electric shuttles made by Benteler's mobility division under the Holon brand. The shuttles will not have a steering wheel or pedals and will feature inward-facing seats for up to nine seated and six standing passengers, according to Bloomberg News, which first reported the Benteler partnership on Friday The tie-up comes amid a flurry of announcements from Lyft's main rival, Uber, which has recently added robotaxis from Waymo and WeRide in various cities around the world. Uber is also working on adding robotaxis from Baidu, Pony AI, Momenta, May Mobility, Volkswagen, Wayve, and just last week announced a deal with Nuro and Lucid Motors. Despite years of testing with various partners, Lyft is still working on adding autonomous vehicles to its own fleet of vehicles. The company plans to put AVs from May Mobility on its network in Atlanta later this year. It's also working with autonomy provider Mobileye, though it's not clear who would make those vehicles. Mobileye's tech is what powers the Holon shuttles, though Lyft told Bloomberg that these aren't the same deals.

Charter Communications, Tesla, Volkswagen: Trending Tickers

Charter Communications (CHTR) stock is plummeting after reporting a second quarter earnings miss and greater-than-expected customer losses amid competition from mobile and fiber internet providers. Tesla (TSLA) stock rebounds as the company prepares to launch robotaxis in San Francisco, according to Business Insider. However, concerns grow over reports from The Information about the company's slow production of its Optimus humanoid robots. Volkswagen (VWAGY) lowered its full-year guidance after reporting a second quarter profit decline, attributing the drop to over $1.5 billion in US tariff costs from the trade war. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Market Catalysts here. Now time for some of today's trending tickers. We're watching Charter, Tesla, and Volkswagen. First up, Charter Communications falling after the cable company reported second quarter earnings that missed expectations. The company reported it lost more internet customers than expected during the second quarter amid increased pressure from mobile companies 5G and fiber home internet offerings. All three of the big US telecom companies been packaging their offerings of wireless phone service with 5G or fiber internet service. Those shares down 17%. Next up is Tesla. Two narratives in focus for that company today. In the first, Business Insider reporting the company will launch its robo taxis in San Francisco this weekend, which did help stem some losses for the shares this morning. They're now up more than 2%. On the flip side, however, speaking to the future of Tesla, the information is reporting some struggles in Tesla's Optimus robot production. Saying the company has only made hundreds of robots. Well, why does that matter? As the company grapples with falling auto sales, Musk has been hyping his humanoid robot as Tesla's next big product, a potential 10 trillion dollar business, and has talked about producing 5,000 of those robots this year. So they're going to have to speed it up if they're only at hundreds. Finally, Volkswagen lowering its full-year guidance and reporting a sharp drop in second quarter profit as the auto giant grapples with the costs of President Trump's trade war. Europe's biggest car maker posting second quarter sales of 80.8 billion euros that missed analyst expectations of more than 82 billion euros. The automaker said the impact of US tariffs alone cost it 1.3 billion euros in the first six months of the year.
